The Shadow and Bone series had soo much potential if darkling and alina joined powers for a world supporting Grisha powers and Magic.

i just finished reading ruin and rising and i completly agree with everything you said. i think alina evolved as a person and started to believe in herself and her powers throughout the two first books and then just settled for a mortal and ordinary life with mal.... tbh im really disappointed with the ending :(

It makes me so angry the whole time Alinla is fighting for her powers and quote it's about a girl fighting a man who wants to talk her powers and how does the story end with her losing her powers and why because is punishment for wanting power ? Is this a joke punishing a woman for wanting power and ppl are like no no she is bunised because she used morozova but correct me if I'm wrong what other choice did Alinla have she wasn't strong enough to destroy the fold and take down the darkling and she was chosen by the stage and by mal I don't remember much about the the sea whip but nothing happened to her after using it so what is the problem she is bunised for being chosen for being the chosen one the whole you can't take what is not giving to you makes no sense the only reason I see for her losing her powers is so she can be with mal nothing more wach make me more mad Alinla lose everything and just have mal and mal get everything he ever wanted he didn't like Alinla's powers and wanted to leave the army and live in the meadows and that is what happens yeah very empeowering story if you think about it the man in the story represent three version of what powers are the darkling the dark side of power Nikolai gry and mal bing amplifier was supposed to be light and the author choice to go with mal fine then by choosing mal Alina should be stronger not lose her powers even when I try to make sense of this stupid ending I can't but I know the author enough now to know why she did what she did to the darkling and to know why she will never let him have a good ending and it breaks my heart

@@nightmare1641 I think the point of it was that realistically, there wasnt a happy ending. Even if this didn't happen, she would still live to be unsatisfied with life with not being with Mal. She would always be hunted. She may find happiness in the end if she kept her powers, but the point of the second book was that even then both she and mal were not happy. I personally would have loved a redemtion arc for the darkling, but I get that would have been nearing lines of toxic. The point of the ending was that there was no happiness out of this. It was an accepting of reality. That was the theme basically for that, that no decision she could make would bring happiness, so she chose one that stuck with her morals the most, with sacraficing her happiness for others. Now, could I have loved a differerent ending? sure. But i dont agree that all YA endings have to be perfectly happy either. Tbh Im not sure how to feel about the ending. @@hermionetwo2739 I understand realistic ending I personally I'm not a fan of happy ending but there's a big difference between a realistic ending and a depressing ending just look at "monster calls" it's a heart braking ending I've read it 2 months after my mother passed away it broke me to pieces but after finishing it I feelt hopefull it helped me move forward but even back then when every thing was good in my life after finishing "ruin and rising" I found myself so gloomy and depressed and redemption doesn't mean sporting toxic behaviour redemption doesn't=forgiveness a good book known how to show that and a good realistic ending would make you feel that YES life is hard but you can make it worth living and maybe if you try your best Wonders can happen and this is not the case here .

I agree with you, mal should’ve stayed her best friend as a moral support. Alina annoyed me so much because when she started being confident about her powers, she always had to push it way. I think that if she should’ve ended up with nikolai or the darkling because they always wanted her to be a powerful women and to embrace her true self, compared to mal who pushed her to stay the old shy alina. I was really upset that the darkling died because we were able to know about his past and it should’ve made alina see him from a different perspective and see less of the “evil” part of him.

I am still confused how Nikolai changed his face if he wasn’t grisha? And Alina never talked bout how Mal kinda cheated on her with zoya.
I also don’t like zoya. Like I get she’s meant to be the mean nasty girl but honestly some of the things she said to the others while in depressing and sad times she was SO FRICKEN RUDE to EVERYONE. And everyone played it as funny and “oh that’s that zoya for u” NO, she’s a horrible person. She was so horrible!
Mal, Boi OMG I CANT. The last bit of the last book I kinda respected him But then remembered how e is so vanilla and simple. I never got the feels for him. He was so annoying when she was trying to help save the world and he would not stop COMPLAINING ABOUT HER POWERS, AND HOW BOREDDDDD HE IS.
LIKE IM SORRY BUT SHES TRYING TO SAVE LIVES, PLAN A WAR, NO ONE LIKES IT BUDDY BUT ITS WHAT HAS TO BE DONE, Boi IDIOT SHUT UP.
“Buhuh but..but... I want the normal Alina boo back 😢” BOI PEOPLE CHANGE SHE IS THE WAY SHE IS NOW, GET OVER IT.
    Like I just can’t.
The ending just didn’t satisfy me, she just went back to her old life, no powers, a new person and life, just the way Mal wanted it. Like I would have been QUEEN BRO. Or even stayed with my friends. Nope, everything she worked for she threw Away.
Also how the FRICK DID MAL LIVE. What what WHAT. How did they bring him back to life??
NIKOLAI IS A BABE HOW DARE SHE TURN HIM DOWN. How did she not get with him. I mean she can have the Mal I’ll take nik😏
Mal and Alinas relationship is probably one of the worst relationship I have ever read. I don’t get how she wrote these other characters so good but Mal was done so bad. I don’t get it. It was SO BAD. It hurts my brainnnnn.
I love the series so much. But the relationship just made no sense.
Good things is I loved the pace of the books. A lot of people complained that it was to fast. But I love the plot moving faster. I hate just diddly daddeling shiz and draw out chapters. I was never ever bored once! I loved it SOOO MUCHH
    Darkling is also “chef kiss”
    Favorite characters:
    Darkling
    Nikolia
    Maybe Alina ehhhh idkkkkk

I don't need anyone to make me feel bad for liking what I like in father fiction I read for my own enjoyment. And yeah, if she treats her characters as almost interesting then yoink!! Its a moral lesson for girls that's a big no for me. I'll stick with Ben Barnes edits

the fact that Alina ends up how she ends up just makes me think she's pathetic. I'm sorry but just because she's the main character doesn't mean that I have to like her. Throughout the whole book, she was so irritating and infuriating, especially in that scene when she made up with mal and suddenly wanted to leave everything behind and just be with him. like, that whole team sacrificed everything to help her and she thinks about leaving the second she gets her prince charming. and in the end, the way mal comes back to life is just so confusing and doesn't make sense at all, because throughout the book she explains how morozova used merzost to bring that girl back to life, but how did tolya and tamar bring mal back? and what really broke me was the fact that when the darkling discovers alina he thinks he's finally met the person able to understand him after thousands of years, but he ends up being wrong, which visibly broke him. team darkling all the way i hate mal with a burning passion

I haven't read them yet and I never thought that this video would contain spoilers for them, as they are not the primary topic.. Not cool at all. I know I'm late for the show, but it would have been nice if you clarified that there would be spoilers for the whole grishaverse.

And don't worry I will start shopping Malina when the show starts. Why ? .it made me feel sad that I can't find one darklina shiper to be excited white so I decided to reread the books because I needed some darkling and it feels like forever until the show comes out and it's been so long since I've read the book I only remember my love for the darkling and my hate for the ending and really not liking Malina but man what a stupid thing to do it was like dragging my heart Through broken glass how can someone who Create a character like kaz try her best to make you feel bad for loving the darkling and the whay she tried to make him the worse and make mal the most perfect man and make him have this bound with Alina and the line where Alina describe her bound to mal and campers it to her bound to the darkling mad me want to throw up 😨 (sorry for eny Malina fan don't read this it's not about Malina but the writer ) her bound to the darkling like it or not was there from the start you see it but her bound to mal only shows up in the final book and it's told to you that it was always been there that is telling not showing not good rewting and it creates so many plot holes it's is so stupid it's TROS stupid😤 it's like she was oh you like darklina no I'm going to do my best to make you hate it and love Malina because it's what I want but everything she does it's stupid like she was fighting her own story and it's not smooth just bad and now I'm depressed again and wandering if I want to watch the show and not feel like it😡.ps I'm sorry if some words don't make sense.my keyboard is going krazy I tried to fix what I could find

I personally would have loved a redemtion arc for the darkling, but I get that would have been nearing lines of toxic. And toxic relationships in a YA can be complicated for an author because you dont want to say this is normal to a teen audience. It can be done, but sometimes it can be hard morally for an author. With the calling out thing about the darkling, I agree with some things, especially with the incest portion. However, I think the author was trying to make it kinda realistic of a dark character. As this is what would happen if this was real. You are drawn to a toxic person, but this is a realistic sort of thought process of "oh this guys evil". I have known people in toxic relationships where this is there thought process, obviously not murderers but you know what I mean. It is the conflicting thought process, and the black and white thinking that is like real toxic relationships. I think point of the ending was that there was no happiness out of this. It was an accepting of reality. That was the theme basically for that, that no decision she could make would bring happiness, so she chose one that stuck with her morals the most, with sacraficing her happiness for others. I personally love ruin and rising and find it a really interesting read Simply for how heartrenching it is. I did not really like the second book too much due to the pacing of it, but I felt Ruin and Rising was okay paced. I don;t think it is for the average reader though, and I think that is okay, and I dont think the author wanted it to be that way anyways, and I like the uniqueness of that and her different view of writing these sort of plot points. It isnt what most people wanted out of the book, and I don;t think that makes the ending nessisarily bad. I like how the author is writing for herself, and not what the audience wanted out of it. I felt the ending could have been done better, and have had a better transition. But i feel it was still good at the same time.

    • @hermionetwo2739

I dont personally think the lesson was for it that girls cant succeed or anything. Or that they should stick with a unsatisifying relationship. I think that theme was an accidental thing the author created rather than the actual intention. I think the intention was to have a realistic sort of fantasy like trope and that wars and battles in real life arent always a happy ending. they often end in blood and tears on either side and some dont even accomplish anything. It was a journey about accepting that not all battles do end up in full satisifing way. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try though, and I think thats the message. It can give a lot of people false hope and i think that is a message of this story. It is the message of beware of false hope, and be realistic but not pessimistic. We often get an eerie tone out of the Apparate and his followers. And they represent the army of belief, and how it can be dangerous, but also helpful at the same time. They represent how faith can be good and bad, and the risks of false hope.
