  • Mammoth Cave Park Ranger John tells us the sad story of Floyd Collins
William Floyd Collins (July 20, 1887 - c. February 13, 1925), better known as Floyd Collins, was an American cave explorer, principally in a region of Central Kentucky that houses hundreds of miles of interconnected caverns within Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest cave system in the world. In the early 20th century, in an era known as the Kentucky Cave Wars, commercial cave owners and explorers in Kentucky entered into a bitter competition to exploit the bounty of caves for commercial profit from tourists, who paid to see the caves. In 1917, Collins had discovered and commercialized Crystal Cave on Flint Ridge (now part of the Mammoth Cave System but at the time an isolated cave). But the cave was remote and visitors were few. Collins had the ambition to find another cave he could open to the public closer to the main roads, and entered into an agreement with a neighbor to open up Sand Cave, a small cave on the neighbor's property. On January 30, 1925, while working to enlarge the small passage in Sand Cave, Collins became trapped in a narrow crawlway 55 feet (17 m) below ground. The rescue operation to save Collins became a national newspaper sensation and one of the first major news stories to be reported using the new technology of broadcast radio. The rescue attempt grew to become the third-biggest media event between the world wars
After four days, during which time rescuers were able to bring water and food to Collins, a rock collapse in the cave closed the entrance passageway, stranding him in the cave, except for voice contact, for more than two weeks. Collins died of thirst and hunger compounded by exposure through hypothermia after being isolated for 14 days, just three days before a rescue shaft reached his position. Collins' body would be recovered two months later.
Although Collins was an unknown figure in his lifetime, the fame he gained from his death led to him being memorialized on his tombstone as the "Greatest Cave Explorer Ever Known".

Great information. I do have to say though. Whenever I see children act like this in public- it is a direct reflection on the parents. The parents allow this behavior and disrespecting each and every person there, and most of all the ranger doing the guide. They don’t even make attempts to correct the children’s behavior, that’s what is truly troubling.

    • @Originaljonsey
      @Originaljonsey 2 года назад

Have you ever heard of mental problems or autism, do you believe in other learning disabilities ? If you correct certain children, they can start a tantrum, doesn’t matter how good of a parent you are, when you correct a child it upsets them. To me it looks like the children are having fun outside, there is nothing wrong with that

They don't raise them, teach them to be quiet and respectful to adults, or teach them the most basic of manners. These types of kids are allowed to rule the roost, be disrespectful, disrupt and annoy everyone around them. I work as a barber, and I see these types of kids all day every day, and it's why I take such a huge issue with sharing space with kids these days, such as at my job, shopping in the store and especially airplanes. These unparented little monsters are allowed to have free reign to bother others who have sensory issues like myself and have to suffer in silence and aren't allowed to say anything.
On the plus side, it does make me value and appreciate the good, kind and respectful children and their wonderful parents all the more.

It’s such an amazing story but the Ranger let out a huge amount of it. In fact a young reporter named Miller did indeed reach Floyd and he was the one who discovered the discarded mason jars leading down to where he was trapped. Because Miller was so small in addition to reporting, he ended up leading the extended rescue effort including several attempts to pull him out and use a car jack to lift the rock off of his foot. Unfortunately, the multiple trips down into the cave caused the access to Floyd to cave-in and that’s when they started to dig down and cut across to where he was.
Reporter Miller who was only in his early 20s became the youngest reporter ever to win a Pulitzer prize. For his stories about the rescue effort in real time. The National Guard actually held a court like investigation during the rescue effort because there was speculationThat the rescue effort was extended so more people could make money on all the public attention and commanded. They were headlines and newspapers as far away as London and roughly 15,000 people surrounding the rescue effort.

It was the 2nd or 3rd larget news story of the century and it was reported around the world.
Actually the court of inquirie was about weather or not if Floyd was really in the cave and if he was sneaking in and out of the cave.
The 15000 day was at the height of the rescue later dubbed Carnival Sunday and most people never even got close to the cave.. There was food vendors, pray groups, balloons with Sand Cave printed on them and a manageriy of other things going on.
Kirk Douglas stared in a movie loosely based on the rescue that was named Carnival Sunday, later renamed Ace In The Hole

Well lets if I can, give you a little better details.
The ranger, most Rangers are rotated around the park system. This ranger may have not had time to learn everything. IV been studying this store for 20+yrs and still don't know everything.
Miller, Skeets Miller was his name. Skeets because he was small like a bug. Yes he did reach Floyd along with a few others. Skeets did in deed find Mason jars, coffee cans used for digging and other things. He just happen to be one of the ones who reporting it. Skeets heard about the rescue and wanted to report it. When Skeets arrived at the cave he found people just milling around, nobody doing anything, the rescue had stalled. He aproach some people sitting on a log and told them he was there for the story and asked what was going on. A reply came back to him out of the dark, mind you locals did not trust out siders and Skeets was one. The voice said "why don't you go find out for yourself" This was one of Floyds brother and he had been down to speak to Floyd. Skeets, having never been in a cave before, he slowly made the crawl down to find Floyd and just before he got to Floyd he slipped and landed atop of a wet mushy mass these was a burlap sake his brother draped over Floyd to try to devert water that was dripping on Floyds face. He moaned and told Skeets to get off him. When he made it back out of the cave and reported to the locals they started to trust him. So began Skeets many rescue trips into the cave and leaded many more but there was all so other trips and other trip leaders. Skeets ended up winning the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting.
The cave in. It is true all the trips began to have its affects on the cave and it was reported that the passage was starting to squeeze shut. By this time many men had been in the cave and most refused to go back in. It was truly a very scary place to go. And at this point all cave work stopped and the shaft was started. Many yrs later it was proven there was a way a round the blockage and Floyd could still be reached.
The shaft. It was reported that digging was like digging into crunchy peanut butter and was very slow. Only two men could work in the shaft at a time and the deeper they dug the more the shaft became unstable. Afraid to keep digging the lateral tunnel was dug and they soon found Floyd. The plan was to come in below Floyd, they broke into the cave just above Floyds head. A doctor was sent down the shaft to evaluate Floyds condition. To large to enter the lateral tunnel a smaller man was sent to Floyd. The doctor told the man what to do and he reported back to the doctor. The conclusion was Floyd had died a couple days before the got to him. Because everything was so unstable it was decided to leave Floyd there. No one was willing to rescue a dead man. The shaft was back filled.
A funeral service was held at Sand Cave. This was Floyds first buiral out of five. Both Homer, a brother,,, and Lee, the father went on the vaudeville circuit to raise money to have Floyd dug up. Hommer and lee had their own tours.
Court of inquiry. Was held about half way through the rescue, the rescue was of stopped for this. There was plenty of rescue teams rotating trips to continue on.
The court was done to investigate the claims that Floyd was not trapped. It was report the Floyd just might be sneaking in and out of the cave. He wasn't. And if anyone was hampering the rescue for personnel gain. To this day I myself wonder the samething. But that's another story.
The National Guard was called in to control the crowd around the cave that's all.
The 17 day rescue attempt brought world wide fame and was front page news around the word right up to minute by minute updates of the rescue to the president. I have some of those papers. Reporters was cut throat on reporting back to their new papers and yellow news reports ran wild oh the fantastic stories ran wild until Skeets was appointed to report the news to all the other reporters. Those reports were the only info going out after that. So cut throat that Lucky Lindy was give film to fly some photos back to the reporters paper. Off course when Lindy got back to the newspaper the film canister was empty. No early photos for that paper.
Carnival Sunday. People were coming to witness the rescue from everywhere. Cars were lined up along the road to the cave for miles. At the height of the rescue on a Sunday there was thousands of people milling around, most never even got close to the cave. There was food vender, balloons with Sand Cave printed on them and all kinds of other stuff going on as if was a county fair.
Some years later there was a movie made based loosely on the Collins story. First named Carnival Sunday later changed to Ace In The Hole staring Kirk Douglas. Movie still plays often. I have it on my DVR.
So that covers the details of that post.
This is just a watered down version of some of the things
that was going on during the rescue. I myself left out a lot of the story and this is not meant to tell the whole thing, Not even close to telling it all. This story is a onion, it has stories in a stories in a story. And I'm relaying all this from memory.
As I hinted, Floyd suffered five burials before all was said and done. At one point in a class covered coffin as a tourist attraction, 3rd and 4th burials. But that's another story.
And again let my point out a few things. The rescue lasted 17 days, he was in a very tight passage with a 27 pound rock trapping his foot. Annual temps in the cave is around
57* has wet from water dripping on him and no room to move his body to warm up. According to the doctor he was alive 15 days. One word, hypothermia. We know for a fact what temperature and conditions determines hypothermia, for Floyd it would be right around three days.
There is NO way he lived stuck in that hole for 15 days. Half of it with no contact with any persons.
When you look at everything of the rescue the printed story does not add up and most certainly points to at least possibly man slauter.
      Any questions??
      floyd

You don't have to take a guided tour for this. You can go to all the same places on your own. Visiting Sand Cave there is a few info boards and a nice wood walk going to the cave. Actually going to the top of a over look deck. You can't see much from the deck and it doesn't do it any justice. It's probably 30 40 yards from the parking area to the deck. Why? I don't know why but the right side of the walk has a railing all the way to the deck. When I first started going to the cave none of that stuff was there and if you didn't know about it you wouldn't know to go back there. It was just a small path going into the woods. Get off the path on the right side and follow it back. When you get close to the end go a little to the right and you will be at the top of the sink. Find a spot in that area where you can start heading down to the cave. There is a rough path on the left wall going down to the cave mouth. As you go down look to the right. Might be a little hard to see it at first but there is a long mound of dirt from the cave heading down the sink floor. That is the dirt from the rescue shaft digging and it's the dirt they couldn't be put back in the shaft. And if you didn't know about there is a large what looks like a sinkhole or crater, what ever you want to call it. That was the rescue shaft. Now it is said The sinkhole is there because the dirt has settled in, or the bottom of the shaft has falling in to a rumored room below it

Mammoth offers a self guided tour year round. You will enter the cave through the historic enteranc. This leads you into the retundra room, a very large circular room. To the right is bat avanue. Straight ahead is the remains of the leaching vats and mining works. Peter dirt was leached the water was pumped to the surface through pipes made of logs, boiled down and the nitric was shipped to DuPonts mill, the same DoPont that is still around today, and was refined into gun powder that we needed to fight the British. Our gunpowder at that time was shipped from overseas. The British cut off our supply. Had it not been for Mammoth and DoPont we would all be British.and that is shout the extent of the self guided tour. Past. That is Booths amphitheater this was John Wilks booths brother, Edwin, and he recited Shakespeare here and stairs going up to gothic av leading into signature hall, the ceiling is covered with historical graffiti names and dates from the turn of the century and this was done with candle smoke and onto the devils arm chair. That's as far as the tour goes in this passage these days but past this is lover's leap and going down to lower passages. Back in the main passage continues to the giants coffin. The passage continues but you will be lead behind the giants coffin down into the wooden bowl room and on to lower passages to continue the guided tour. The self guided tour is mainly just in the retundra area.

I am a Collins and Mammoth Cave historian. I also collect Collins stuff. First thing is Sand Cave is not a cave. It's just a shelter cave it's just one big room. But on the left side of the cave against the wall is where Collins entered the passage. The passage is not a solid passage but rather maded up of large boulders in what is called breakdown. And there is no sand in Sand Cave.
The rescue attempt lasted almost two weeks and it was reported around the world.
There is one big problem though. When they reached Floyd the doctor said he had been died for only a couple of days. Again this took almost two weeks to get to Floyd. He was in a very tight spot and unable to move, it was cold 55 degrees at best and wet. He would have died of hypothermia in less than three days at best. And he had no food or water almost that whole time.

He would stay at their houses while he work on the cave. Floyd ate breakfast at Doyles that morning and then went to the cave. Floyd was known to disappear for a day or two at a times so when he didn't show up a Doyle's later that day Doyle just thought he went to Estes house. People knew where Floyd was working, It wasn't until the next day, when Doyle talked to Estes about Floyd. They headed to the cave. Jewell, Estes son went with them. When they got to the cave they seen Floyds coat hanging from a branch. Jewell headed right into the cave. Floyd was trapped 150ft into the cave. The passage circle down like a corkscrew. When Floyd was trapped he yelled for help untill his voice gave out. Because of the nature of the cave his voice didn't travel far so no one would had heard him anyway. Jewell made it to Floyd and he told Jewell to go and get help and that's what Jewell did.
At this point Floyd had been trapped a day and a half and so the rescue began.
People knew where he was but because Floyd had a habit of disappearing no one was worried about him and no one would have heard him yelling.

As it should be! It's from a lack of parenting that allows children to behave like this. SMDH!
      Cheers!

I like the mom , after the kid dropped his binoculars off the platform, goes " We'll just hold a kid over the side by his ankles and so he can reach down and grab them" And the other mom just goes, "Yea, well we can do that later" lol
This Floyd guy's story is just funny, I hope he was a comedian or he missed and then made his calling after his accidental death. He has a better story than most. RIP Floyd Collins

Please if you’ve got one with adhd for pity’s sake, don’t subject him or the hapless public listening to such a storytelling. Take him out of immediate earshot. Asap. Spoken by someone who has adhd.

First this guide is doing great . My mom would never let me be so distracting as a child ..Second.. my parents took me here when it was just the cave no tour no walkways .. i was able to laydown to look into the opening which had a metal grate inserted bars so no one could get down there but the shaft remnemts were still there and amazingly all around that area you will see rocks with more openings you can throw small stones down and hear them going down... Its amazing property...i couldnt believe all the trees and walkways and etc ..

WHY WHY WHY do parents in insist on bringing kids to places when they know it’s not gonna work? U know your own kids, u know they aren’t going to want to chill & listen, yet u still bring them so they annoy the people who are there because they want to learn about the history

However, I would have given up and quit with that kid being so unruly, every place and thing and this means certain restaurants are not for kids , people choose not to be distracted by nutso kids
