  • Steve Moriarty & Jim Fiebig travel to Madagascar in search of exotic rare gemstones. They go to the mines in Ilakaka to get a firsthand look at the miners in action. They find and visit different gem dealers along the way.
Also available to see in person at Moriarty's Gem Art Store at 126 South Main Street, Crown Point, Indiana. We're located in the hub of Northwest Indiana on the downtown Square.

That was interesting. These people sure work hard for a meager life but the kids seem to be in happy spirits! Thanks!☺

At around 10 minutes into this video, they are driving through a rough-and-tumble mining town. Once through the town they came to the suburbs.
It's Suburbia, Madagascar style. Where, just like everywhere else in the civilized world, all the houses in the sub-division look the same !
Except in this case, they were uniquely Straw Huts.

They would live so much better if they did the whole process by themselves and sold online.

@Valken My thoughts exactly. They could become self-sufficient and improve their Economy. They also had little to no adequate accommodations for their hard labor! Disturbing. This Video will definitely make me think twice before buying or excepting another Raw Excavated Gemstone. It had the appeal of Blood Diamonds throughout. Thank you for sharing.

@MoreGems.com Your Name speaks volumes and this Video supports your agenda. I see your vision for Madagascar and their people. Re-watch your Video with empathy and good intent for Madagascar and the Madagascan People. What does the Video reveal to you and your Foundation does the same. Hard earned low wages in triple digit temperatures; dangerous work conditions; then you are reclaiming a portion of those wages in payment for training. At your Foundation, 5 Participants were unable to complete their Training due to financial hardship, 1 showed promise and 1 Graduated. We are not ALL naive and gullible. Offer them On-the-job-Training in Gem Cutting, Farming etc. Do you not see, have you not learned. You are obviously in a position to do right by Madagascar and the People. For the love of GOD, DO IT RIGHT!

seeing these poor guys doesn't make me want to buy a natural gem.
Why not buy lab-grown? Same qualities less the pain and misery, no?

altar7 If there was no gems they would be poorer, Madagascar gem mining supports thousands of families.

That's also the classic argument to justify prostitution in those countries... The negative effects always outweigh the benefits.

What do you suppose they should do then? Create another business? Wouldn't that just be another business then?

Support people who try to break free from that evil cycle of being used for cheap labor is the answer.
