    Hey Pete. I'm Ian's friend Tim B. In my line of work, we do a 6/6 schedule (6 hours on and 6 off. Captain has the boat from 6 to 12 and the mate has the boat from 12 to 6). We get a nap everyday, and as silly as that sounds, after 30 some years of doing it, I love a nap every damn day! When I was a mate, the back watch 0001 to 0600 really was brutal the furst few days of the hitch. But like everything else, you get used to it. Tell Ian "Friends dont let friends drive an Airbus"

    Great video as always! Keep up the good work! I get excited to see each time you drop a new Vlog! I’m a 1000+ hour flight instructor, and I was wondering if you could do a video on regional airlines / low cost carriers that are taking pilots at ATP mins and compare their contracts and see which one looks best in your eyes to help people pick the right airline! I live in Knoxville, TN and plan to commute wherever is closest to keep the best Q.O.L. Thanks so much!!!

      Thanks Aaron, keep gettin those hours! I can talk about the pros and cons of my experiences, but since I haven't flown at all the places, wouldn't want to comment on those airlines. Just know that each place is unique, and each are going to have Great things about them, and not so great!

    Pete, I am turning 30 soon. I am wondering what you think about someone at my age transitioning into becoming a pilot? I have done two flights already and I absolutely loved it!

      Absolutely not too old. People ask me this question in their 40’s and 50’s, so at 29, you’re still ahead of the game. Realistically you could be at an airline in 3-5 years. Which still gives you a 30-25 year career! Plenty of time to get seniority, upgrade, and fly heavy jets. You have more than enough time. Go chase your dream!

    I used to work at a prison night shift. It definitely is tough. I used to work out before and after my shift for an hour each, blackout curtains in my room, and sleep until my body woke me up. When I had my 4-day off cycle, I would just stay awake after my shift and return to the day schedule. On my last day of the off cycle, I would stay up until around 4am and sleep until my body woke me up. It wasn't the best, and definitely not healthy long term I can't imagine. But it worked for a few years. Appreciate the videos! You're living my lifelong dream, I had the realization last year that flying commercial likely isn't feasible for this lifetime. Keep up the content!

    I was military and then after I was law enforcement. The way I was able to sleep better during the day was to wake up early and spend the time you would normally spend after work, before work instead. So basically, I would just shower and go straight to bed after work which would give me the most consistent sleep without waking up constantly. That’s what worked for me on a typical night shift.

    Nightshift blackout curtains and earplugs along with air conditioning when needed always worked great for sleeping. as long as I got my 8 hours in I was good to go.

    Coming from the management side of the trucking industry night liner was always tough on everyone who worked those shifts. At least you didn't have to unload or load your plane. Some of these LTL carriers in trucking have the drivers offload and load their own trailers before the turn back to domiciled terminal. When you fly into the Memphis or Indy hub do you have to wait that long as well for your night trip out of there? Some of the drivers have what they call meet and turns and thats where two drivers met at a set location and exchange trailers and then drive back to their domicile so that they get home every night. Amazing how some of the lingo used in trucking is also used with the airlines and railroads.

    I like to do stand ups at my airline, which are similar to these turns. I get a lot more time in the hotel, usually like 7-9 hours, so I can get a near full nights sleep. 3 hours is absolutely brutal though.

      I would say yes, it certainly wouldn’t hurt. Airlines like hiring “well rounded” individuals. A military background I would think puts someone in that category

    I read some comments on Reddit about early death after flying cargo as it’s night time flying… is that a concern of yours?

      I’ve heard the same thing. But it’s not a concern for me. I truly believe that taking care of your body and mind with working out, eating right, and staying positive is the key to longevity.

    Does anyone know how long pilots will be around for? I am interested in pursuing a career I aviation but I don't want to spend thousands of dollars and thousands of hours on traning just for AI to take my job. When will plane's completely fly themselves?

      AI won't take over in your lifetime or your grandchildren's for that matter. There are still too many things that pilots are necessary for to have AI completely take over. You should pursue it if you really want to.

      AI does nothing in actual airline flying. The AP only does what we program it. If we tell it to fly into a mountain, it’ll do it. I don’t worry even a little bit

      @@rutgervitez4438 With all the weird stuff that I have had to do on the job, I think you are fine. It is hard to say where AI will get and when it will get there, though. The reality is that you still need a human for the most crucial parts of the job. Don't forget that it cost money and takes time to acquire aircraft if there is a fully autonomous plane, and passengers need to be comfortable with the idea of them. If one crashes, and based off the military's drones one will, then that will kill that program really quick.

    So how long were you off after those 4 days of work ?
    I went to work at 7pm got home at 6ish am. Went to bed at 7-8am woke up at 3pm. Did that work over a year truck driving.

    Nightshift advice from 19 years. Less than 4 hr break stay up. Clean eating through the night. No caffeine after 3am. Always riise before 1300. Eat, gym, then errands.

    Having worked my fair share of overnights, blackout curtains and noise canceling sound machine when sleeping have been my saving grace. You can get one off amazon for fairly cheap and its small/compact enough for you to travel with whilst on the road.
    Also, I would not go to sleep until i needed my required rest. The naps are killer so avoid those. So lets say you needed to show at 2100 and it takes you 30 minutes to get to work and 30 minutes to get ready to roll out the door, I would plan for bed at 1000 and have my alarm set for 1800 for a full 8 hours. So getting home around 0800 gives you two full hours to prep for the next night and chill out time.
    There is a reason why the FAA has an entire section in 117 based on flight duty times in the 0200-0500 range. Get your rest, but make it a full block.

    Yeah I've worked backside of the clock as a line tech for an fbo, UAL ramper at ORD, and as a FDX sorter at ORD (the P2 sort facility at the FDX building on the other side of the UAL cargo building from the main FDX ORD ops/ramp building). What makes it easy? Be a night owl! I can't sleep at will but I do stay up very late so that kind of work suits me, probably like the pilots who like the hub turns. Honestly, if I make it to FDX as a pilot I'd bid those lines once off reserve. Starting work in the morning is no bueno! I'd rather be finishing my work at 6am than starting at 6am.
    This video was a chefs kiss type of life I want as a pilot. Fedex, night hub turns, living in NYC (until I can get that CGN base). I'm actually moving to Westchester county next month to start instructing. I'll be taking the train down to the city every now and then so if I see you I'll give a shout out! Anyway, thanks for this video! Enjoyed it!
    If you ever have a long sit in Memphis, perhaps a video of the pilot digs at the SuperHub would be nice. Where's the free popcorn at?!?! And maybe a video on the different types of flying at Purple (hub turns, out-and-backs, see America, around the world, etc). Could incorporate the different FDX fleet types.

    My sister was a flight attendant (stewardess) at United for 40 years based in SFO. She retired as a gate agent in LAS. I love going along with you on your flights and seeing cockpits and other aviation related content. Fly safe!

    There’s a bus from Manhattan straight to newark (and back) also. I take it a few times a week. It’s called the newark Airport Express and for crew it’s cheaper than the train

    I've been working night as a aircraft mechanic for two years now and I'll say it's definitely better to keep the sleep schedule and sleep during the days. That being said I've found it to be way worse on family, social life unless you have people who run the same schedule to be with. It can be mentally taxing.

    the aircraft already does most of the work, but pilots are still necessary for redundancy, because the autopilot and other systems inevitably fail. I would say if you are interested in pursuing a career in aviation, absolutely go for it

    I’m 27 and thinking about getting into aviation, I’ve always loved it. Is it too late to become a pilot or is there still a pilot shortage?

      Not at all, 27 is early! Most of the pilots in my new hire class were in their 40's and some in 50's. You have plenty of time.

      @@pilotpetefly I mean more in the sense that it’s late because of seniority. There are not as many pilots being trained now and in the years so come so I might be stuck at a regional or perhaps on reserve for ever as a FO at a major for years and years since there won’t be any new people coming in.

      @@josephpe90 It's impossible to predict the future. You're 3-5 years away from being at any airline if you have zero experience, so no one can tell you what's going to happen. IMO, at 27, you have MORE than enough time to get to a legacy carrier and have a long and lucrative career.

    I'm in law enforcement... when i did the graveyard... i found what worked for me was getting a few hrs as soon as i got home... wake up enjoy the day and get a few good hours before i leave for my shift...
    I would like to know how your schedule differs from a passenger pilot's schedule.. this last Greensboro legs you did how many hours did you get from that?

      Yeah that's kind of how I/ve been sleeping. The differ a bit, def the night his turns, but passenger pilots still fly a lot of night/redeyes as well.
      I flew 8 hours block, credited 33hrs of pay I believe

      I really enjoy anything aviation.. but i get a little confused when pilots and f/a say you only get paid when the door closes... so how you mentioned that you flew 8 but credited 33... does that also mean you got compensated for 24 hrs as well?

      @@rilloman so the “pay clock” only begins when the door closed as far as when pilots and FAs get paid. However, each company has “minimum credit” rules. For example, even if I only fly an hour flight, I’m guaranteed at least 6 hours of pay at my company. Some airlines are higher, other lower. So that’s why my flight time was only 8 hours, but my pay was 33 hours.

      Your explanation clarified that a lot... Got one more follow up... Does a pilot who is just the back up to the captain and co-pilot on a 12hr flight if he or she doesn't land or take off, does that relief pilot get the logged flight hours added to their running total?

      @@rilloman Great question, the answer is yes, they all can log 12 hours. But how it gets logged varies. I don't believe there is any real definition for what to do. But from what I've seen, 12 total hours; 8 as SIC, and 4 as "Other" would work. The PIC is always the PIC so they would put down PIC for all 12 (to the best of my knowledge).
