I know I'm guilty of over-blending, so this video is such a good reminder for me. Consider each stroke. Regularly wipe the brush. Paint with intention. My new mantras!! I'm very grateful, Malcolm, you always freely give so much valuable information.😀

Yes, attitude is so important...we have almost learned the rules by heart as you keep repeating it to us! And, still, we have to practise it every single day to develop our skills! Thank you so much for this video!❤❤❤

That was very helpful. Not blending is hard to do when you are used to it, but the end result of not doing it looks great.

Hi, thats a lovely vibrant painting. Thankyou. Could i ask ... does the fat over lean rule still fully matter when painting alla prima as well? Id love to know for sure... as Im always somewhat confused about this. I thought it didnt matter in alla prima, with all the layers being wet at the same time. I mainly only paint alla prima... as I cannot use mineral spirit,,,. and therfor I have nothing else to thin down the paint with except for linseed oil. Thats where the dilemma comes in for me. ... because I know linseed oil thins down the consistency, but also makes the paint more fat. So,, Sometimes i paint straight from the tube in the first layer and then add the linseed oil only on top layer.. to try to follow fat over lean. But then other times I just add the linseed oil when and where i need it,, in both the initial layer and the top layer. Should I not be doing this for alla prima? I mean... should I stick with painting straight from tube in first layer and only add linseed oil only in subsequent layers?

You are correct. In the alla prima approach, cracking is unlikely since the paint all forms one wet layer. It is still useful to work from thin layers to thicker layers though, as this helps you to build up complexity and develop the idea while limiting the struggle with applying thick paint over thick paint. Adding linseed oil is only necessary if the paint is too thick to manage - not buttery enough. Otherwise, only thin the paint for that first scrubby lay-in of the composition. For this I may use a little linseed oil or spirits. Remember that linseed oil is already in the paint so when you apply thicker paint on top it is fat-over-lean. No need for adding in linseed oil. I hope I have covered your query.

@@MalcolmDewey Thanks a million for taking the time to write all that info. Yes youre right.. I shud be working from thin to thick ... I forgot about that. Im going to look for thinner, more buttery paint brand. Rembrandt paint mite be a good one for that
