    I used to work in Venice Beach and lived in Santa Monica at a Sober living, this was a very big time in my life with a lot of change and a lot of transition from the life I lived into the life I live now and I worked for a dog grooming place. I used to ride my bike to work daily and when I tell you I loved riding my bike I truly mean it, I rode to and from work everyday morning and night and used it to commute everywhere in Los Angeles, I used to lock my bike up to the fence next to the job and one day a guy with a big backpack was looking a little too long at my bike and I saw him through the window so I went outside and said “hey that’s my bike” and he muttered under his breath “it’s a nice bike” and he scurried off, the next day at work, I work all day and then come out for lunch around noon and my bike was gone, I was crushed.. I went back inside with a tear in my eye and told the owners and they watched the security cameras and the same guy from the day before came back with bolt cutters and stole my bike, I went to Venice police and made a police report and the police had so much going on they told me point blank “the chances of us getting your bike back are slim to none” that hurt.. I still miss that bike dearly, that was about a year and a half ago, I’m 3 years sober now and just moved to New York and going to get a bike again when I can financially afford it, thanks for reading my story if you have haha and if you are in New York and know someone getting rid of a bike that’s inexpensive please feel free to comment haha

      Let me follow this guy’s logic: pays $100 for an obviously much more expensive bike, gets confronted with irrefutable facts that he is now in possession of a stolen bike by the owner… and has the audacity to threaten violence on rightful owner because he‘s out $100. If he was legit his response would have been quite different. Oh, then due to poor upbringing or Daddy issues his response is to start damaging the bike by kicking it. Yeh, he knew it was stolen and like an ungrateful toddler he had to lash out.

      Yes, Casey’s video “Bike Lanes” basically showed how the NYPD was shaking down bike riders for between $10 - $75 per ticket for riding outside of bike lanes, even if the bike lane is not the safest place to be. My housemates, a married couple, were also ticketed for not riding in the bike lanes in the city in 2011. They are a Long Island couple in their 50’s just trying to carefully ride to Riverside Park for the a ride and were treated like they were criminals for riding of the bike lane for 2 minutes. Also, in “Bike Lanes” I love how Casey pointed out that there were right behind a car that was double parked and yet the police officer chose to ticket a bicyclist instead for a b.s. charge. The film is brilliant!

      @@geocosmicvalentinewow really? That was a thing? Geez. Here in the U.K. bike lanes exist in a lot of cities and towns, but they’re an option for a cyclist not a requirement. Bike lanes don’t always go where you want to and they’re typically not continuous (old roads) so it’s understood that you can ride in a bike lane or in the road, either or. 😂

    • @geocosmicvalentine
      @geocosmicvalentine Год назад

      @@arghjayem It “was” a thing but I think Casey’s film helped to put weight behind the complaints and it’s not done anymore because it’s the same here as what you mentioned, the lanes don’t always go to where you want to go and are not typically continuous. A lot of it is understanding the energy streams of how traffic moves in certain parts of the city and on certain streets. It can be quite complicated for someone who is used to following ordinary traffic rules elsewhere but when they get here it can feel like pure chaos. But thankfully they don’t do it anymore.

    My wife's bike was stolen from the train station months ago. One day we were walking home from the local market, and she (sometimes I call her Eagle Eye) saw her bike locked up with a bunch of other bikes on the side of the road. This is in our neighborhood. No tracking device. Just happenstance. What are the odds?
    We called the police, which ended up working out, but it was an unpleasant ordeal that included us searching the archives for pictures of the bike and receipts for repairs, but we got it back after a few weeks. Anyway, having your property stolen is a terrible experience, and bikes can be highly personal objects for some people. Glad you got your bike back. That doesn't happen very often.

B) because they didn't call the cops, the thief was able to threaten them with wirecutters and kicking the bike and damaged it. C) the thief got his friend/co-conspirators involved to try to intimidate the owner, with no cops and no brother backing him up it could've went way worse D) the criminal likely got a slap on the wrist and they probably didn't even get him imprisoned or anything useful. righteous recovery. I was 4 yrs old in 1977. I left my bike in front of my place.. we had a big field for a yard. in massachusetts. yellow 5 spokes, yellow protectors ..super obvious. damn thing nearly glowed. I went outside and there was a gang of bigger boys, at least 7 to 12 yrs old with my bike up on the sidewalk.. My first encounter with outright violent words and thieving. I never recovered it. My mom was afraid. Calling police was worthless. Today I carry my 1300 dollar mountain bike, at 100 pounds of weight even.. up a flight of stairs...just to keep an eye on it.(and my neighbors and I keep an eye for each other) . Great video.. I live in the Netherlands and bike theft is a real problem here in some places (especially with so many bikes).
    I always lock my bike with two locks. A wheel lock and a very good chain lock, so it's very hard to steal.
    Last week I came back to it and my saddle was gone.
    Turns out that just the saddle was worth like 80 bucks new, I didn't even know.
    But yeah, if they can't get your bike guess they'll just take a part of it instead.

    I had my bike stolen one time, someone came up on my front deck and cut the lock off it, which isn't something that happens too often around here. I made a police report, but ended up finding it myself at a local pawn shop that is known to be a fence. They had my $1200 Norco for sale for $120, with department store bikes next to it priced higher, which to me scream that they KNEW it was stolen and were trying to move it quickly. One of my friends happened to have went to school with the son of the owner of that pawn shop, and asked him if he could help get my bike back, they said I could buy it for $80 I think it was, to which I said they could go f@#$ themselves and I would be getting it back for nothing.
    The police ended up investigating and got it back for me about 2 months later. Was really frustrating as I didn't have a car at the time and used my bike to get to work, but it was totally worth it not paying the 80 bucks in my opinion.

And when buying a used bike you can always call the local PD to check if it was reported stolen with the frame number (at least in my country).
