- It's been over twenty long years since Rare and THQ brought Conker's binge drinking and frying pan bashing antics to our Nintendo 64's. Since officially being introduced to gamers in 1997 and later making his first in-game appearance in Diddy Kong Racing as a playable member of that game's cast, Conker would eventually claw his way all the way into the upper echelon of memorable platforming characters of the nineties.
After many gravitated to him in Diddy Kong Racing, it quickly became clear that Conker would not only fit nicely into his own game, which was already in development, but that he had the potential to be much more than just another 3D platformer.
As many gamers today well know, Conker went on to garner the affections of many for its fresh take on the 3D platformer tropes that countless games of the era had imitated by that point. Considering that the Conker series only includes a few actual games and just a handful of other appearances here and there, Conker has accumulated a rather abnormally large and durable cult following fanbase.
So, then why have we only seen so much of him over the last two decades? Why would a character with so much promise be relegated to so few games and so far apart? What the hell happened to Conker?

Have you ever played bad fur day, if you have then you would know that this game was extremely good. So, if they were to make a game they would milk it and make a game every month which would make the series die. (Ps there are more ps4 controllers than xbox)

they did... 3 times. Live and Reloaded, which had updates graphics but was censored, and the Rare replay which both were xbox one X enhanced

I would love to play this again... sucks that it’s pretty much locked away in the past, the game now sells for a ridiculous high price and it’s very rare. I wish they’d make another conker game like bad fur day, possibly a remake but maybe a continuation. Mind you, good luck getting that across all platforms. You’ll never see it on PlayStation lol

the xbox remake tried to make it into soccom navy seals and that killed the multiplayer also Microsoft purchased rare and largely left it for dead until recently
I thought the multiplayer was better in the remake. The N64 multiplayer was kinda lame in my opinion. Except for that Rob the bank mode or whatever it was called.

I love conker and reloaded that was literally my fav game when I was like 6, hopefully they stop making millions of controllers and revive this series soon !

I think MS is going to revive a lot of their original Xbox IP to give the new Xbox system loads of exclusives so they wont be out like they were with the One.
The version they put on Rare Replay is the n64 version I think that says it all which is better.
I like the Xbox version better. Simply because it's the same exact game just the graphics are better. Hell the graphics look so good it looks like the game was created in 2010
Man its a shame, Rare were freakin rockstars during the Nintendo 64 era, literally every game was a 10/10, and they mastered several genres as well: FPS, Adventure, 3D Platformers, and even Fighting games. I dont think they ever released a bad game during those years.
But then they sold their soul to the Dark Side, to Microsoft, and where did they end up? Making shitty Kinect games and a disappoiting pirate game.
Speaking as a Playstation fanboi, Im convinced that if Sony had bought them, they would have bettee used their potential, imagine a Banjo-Kazooie game backed by Sony's millions. That company has the better 1st party exclusives for a reason, because they give creative freedom and resources to their studios.
So many amazing IPs going to waste like Perfect Dark, Conker, and Banjo.
What a shame.

When a company like Microsoft doesn't understand the appeal of Conker they are most likely to undermine it.
Microsoft has given No honor to Conker since it’s like they gave him a ribbon and made everyone believe there was more to come . the best yet and then .... nothing...... The most underrated character in the lineup fasho he’s my favorite due to the weapons choice and attitude his squirrel has . Only way we can get him back is to demand him back.

yesterday i had a dream that conker 2 was announced at e3 and it was this huge next gen adventure that resembled that beta conker 64 version thematically
with the rise of fps and pvp games, they should bring back conker's live and reloaded pvp today. would probably blow up and i for sure would cry in nostalgia lol
The original's multiplayer was the best; why did they have to take out all of those multiplayer mini-games?
The best dam game on 64 besides golden eye so many memories love that game so ahead of its time and so many games to play it was like call of duty heist was my favorite they need to remake this game everyone would love to relive this for real
I and many others would pay full price for a team based conker shooter somewhere along the lines of Team Fortress 2 meets Garden Warfare 2 but in the spirit of the original N64 multiplayer.

@Sir Galahad the game was delayed, maybe they are working back in some kind of dual artistic style to change it. It should have been in the stores in 2019. So let's see in what this ends.
Also rare per se won't be 100% in their old ips anymore, but other studios are working in them rn.
The games i can confirm will be released in some point are a new killer instinct and a new perfect dark.
With all the other ips let's see, but is more likely banjo, conker and kameo might be back in some point also.

Microsoft is not that bad as we all think anymore. One oldest rare worker who is in rare rn said it's their favorite year since the last 20 years, so well, rare is in some kind of pre Microsoft purchase rn but they aren't in one new golden ages yet.
Microsoft are doing good job, they are giving freedom to their studios, just see ninja theory with their 3 new games.

The Xbox version is on Xbox store right now. Cheap too and plays really well on new consoles. Did a playthrough last week and it still holds up

conker started development before banjo conker 64 got delayed to 98 for diddy kong racing to release on time then banjo dropped next year conker appeared at e3 or some game thing and was criticized for being another kiddie game so rare pushed it back to 2001 without telling anyone till e3 2000 revealed at a themed bar with mugs there with the games logo also with shirts and the rare elusive conker condom then game released in 2001 thats the timeline not what he says
edit: he also say that body animation and mouth movement was impressive maybe compared to oot and mario but rare had achieved that already what the brought was full voice acting (impressive due to cartridge space limits.) and eye animation though eye movement came with select characters also what do you mean removing crude scenes the game had all the cutscenes that were too hot for nintendo (but not the tedi hitler multiplayer one for obvious reasons) and why gloss over conkers other bad fur day and its cancellation with its engine and stuff being repurposed for live and reloaded and dont pretend conkers big reunion was like a small teaser it was a game sure its not long but its not a trailer or demo!
I’m so glad that this game can be played on the Xbox one because I never got to play this game because I was only two years old when it came out and I was only six years old when the remastered version came out so I couldn’t get it until I was like 16 and even then my my therapist told my mom not to let me play until I was 18 luckily she didn’t listen otherwise I wouldn’t be able to have played the game at all because my Xbox is nowhere to be found so I need a new one.
I'll tell ya what happened. The shift to an M-rated platformer came back to the franchise and bit it in the ass.
It all started when I was eager for a Conker platformer after first hearing about it in a magazine when I was a kid. When I saw clips of the game, "Bad Fur Day", however, I saw very little relating to what I have in mind. So I had second thoughts and lost interest. Only in my teenage years, when I was getting into RUclips did I realize that it turned M-rated. At first, I must've gone crazy. So I stopped watching it.
All of the sudden, at the beginning of my college days, my curiosity haunted me again. So I looked it up on RUclips once more and saw clips of the game. I got to saw exactly what I was looking in Conker's adventure, but only to learn that it was cancelled for an M-rated platformer! I looked up more information an learned that whiny journalists were to blame for calling "too cutesy"! So what if it was cutesy? Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie were like that and they still had dark moments. Anyway, it was very heartbreaking to me to see such a game get canned for Bad Fur Day. The music, the mechanics, the story, potential co-op, the level design, the bosses, the magical atmosphere, and 4-player mayhem made it all more promising and more interesting.
Sure Conker's Bad Fur Day was loved by a bunch of gamers (especially near the end of the N64's life cycle), and Microsoft even allowed Rare to remake the game for the Xbox. However, as I learned Conker's Big Reunion, which was released for Microsoft's Project Spark for the Xbox, was cancelled shortly after it started, and saw this AR game for the franchise, which didn't really look like a game at all, it came to me. Rare just didn't know what to do with the squirrel anymore.
With that, I was led to believe that the success of Bad Fur Day eventually led to the ironic downfall of the squirrel. Had the folks at Rare, before being bought out by Microsoft, released Twelve Tales: Conker 64 (a game that I was looking forward to), told the journalist to screw off, and make a new cartoony character for an M-rated platformer, Conker would've made Rare more money, I would've gotten my hands on what would've been a much more superb platformer, that new character would've done the raunchy platformer, and everyone would've been happy!
Conker: Live and Reloaded is still number 1 in my opinion :) One of the few that did everything from horror, comedy, action, racing, and collectibles awesome! (emphasis on collectibles you #%@?!)
It's baffling to me how video game companies have plenty of IPs just getting cobwebs and don't do anything with it. Take a look at Disney: they are doing movies, shows and animations of every single IP and character they have, even if no one asked for them. It can be obscure characters only comics fans know about it, but they are doing it. I heard about Conker only sometime ago and watched a few videos, but it's already funny to me. They should start a trilogy right now!

Lazy writings is more like it, I had the perfect sequel for conkers bad for a day called " Days on end " which takes place years after Barrie's death, where Conkee has to fight off Teddy's once again to save not only his son but the rest of his kingdom from a total annihilation. First parody is the hunger games, then making its way towards The walking Dead, wolf on Wall Street, matrix, 1917, and the American psycho all the top it off with references to the conjuring series, the purge and cabin in the woods

@@Sjono Other reason is that Gregg Mayles is still with Rare, which means Microsoft doesn't want to touch Banjo without his permission. Chris Seavor on the other hand no longer works for Rare so there's nothing stoping Microsoft from using Conker as a test subject.
Also the only reason Conker was edgy to being with is to standout on the N 64, without Nintendo Conker no longer stands out compared to other edgy games like Red Dead Redemption. There's a reason why Viva Piñata is the third best selling Rare game on Xbox 360, because there aren't much casual games on the system so Viva Piñata stands out.

Yet Microsoft still uses Banjo-Kazooie. He camoed in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Minecraft, Sea of Thieves. He’s also been a playable character in SSBU. The series’ music even appeared in a Forza game. Banjo has made more major appearances than Conker. Microsoft will use Banjo when they damn well please, which still makes it even more jarring they used Conker over Banjo for Hololens
Microsoft really needs to make a remake of many rare properties, there’s so much untapped potential here, I would buy the remake and 100% it!

I can tell you the real reason for conker not being around today.
It's because ultra violence video games are not acceptable anymore.

Conker live and reloaded made it not ultra violence and they might make a sequel and he isn't ultra violence on this day and they might make it like Mortal Kombat but it isnt a fighting game

Understand mortal kombat back on the Nintendo 64 was ultra violent so don't get me wrong.
Conker was worse because it added in more sexualized stuff,alcohol,drugs,and many other the things that has become what makes up normal society.
As to where mortal kombat became such a norm game that no one is really all to offended by it anymore and it has become a cult phenomenon where tournament are held for the game.
Mortal kombat is no longer a despised game for its violence because it's become the norm.
Conker was never made again because of it is.
An as much as a remaster version can be made it will be watered down to a degree that it's no longer what it should be let alone a sequel ever being made for it.

How could have Mortal Kombat become the norm, if you're saying the reason Conker failed is because ultra-violent games inevitably fall out of acceptance?
Besides, sex and drugs have been acceptable material to the norm since CBFD. The obvious example would be the GTA series. That's one of the most popular franchises our right now, and they didn't start going far with the sex and drugs until GTA 3 came out in 2001 (the same year CBFD came out), and they flourished into the controversial game we all know and love today.

I think you're using "cult" incorrectly. To say something has a "cult" following, that means they have a small but passionate fanbase. Mortal kombat has always had a HUGE fanbase. I think it's more accurate to say that Conker has a Cult following.

Conker wasn’t a financial success on N64. It was a sales flop for Rare due to many factors, but it does have a strong cult fanbase.

What happened is that it went to Microsoft... Had Rare joined Sony, the story would be much much different... It is also extremely ironic that so many games have been made that are arguably WORSE than Conker's Bad Fur Day... Most of Microsoft's original titles suck, and that wasn't an indicator that it would be a bad move for Rare? The best thing that can be done is for Rare to let things run their course with Microsoft (which hopefully ends soon) and for them to partner with someone else... Also, if Conker joined Smash Bros., it would be disastrous because it would be yet again another unfavorable move for the character involving the wrong audience... We don't need that. I need him more angry and hungover seeking vengeance on the teddies...
