I personally think Hickman’s arc starts with Fantastic Four and ends with Secret Wars, since Reed and Doom form the central figures and core of the story in the end. Easily one of Marvel’s best, ever. The almost definite Marvel experience.

i had bought secret wars about 5 years ago now. didn't realize how good the whole run was til i listened to the whole run by comicsexplained. pretty insane stuff, time to start collecting.

I just started collecting comics. I was extremely nervous about picking up something I wouldn’t understand but then I got advice to just pick something and go with it. I found a used hardback copy of Secret War for pretty cheap in really good condition so I said screw it and got it. Since then I’ve been hunting down the Avengers and New Avengers volumes to build the collection. It was difficult deciding rather to get the volumes or the omnibus but I decided to get the volumes for now and if I ever end up needing more shelf space I’ll work on exchanging my volumes for the omnibus. Anyways, that’s a long way of saying go start collecting something that sounds cool or looks cool! Don’t over think it and you’ll have a ton of fun!

I think the avengers run was good, my problem is the amount of retcons.
Hickman's NA is one of the best superhero comics I've read in a long time. I think probably it's biggest fault is the degree to which it crosses over with or relies on you being aware of the events of other books.
That said, I agree that he's generally a more "story-focused" writer. I think part of why I personally liked NA in particular is the additional focus on characterization/character... degradation. + A run revolving in large part around the simple concept of the Illuminati making themselves worse - taking what the rest of the M.U. come to regard as almost depraved actions for the sake of the greater good - is the cat's ass.
And yea, Thor and Hyperion's godly brotherhood shit was really among the best character work in that Avengers run.
For me, rather than the story focus critiques, I think some of my biggest complaints lie with his handling of some characters being needlessly repetitive. I shouldn't always be able to predict that IM and Reed are going to be verbally spanked by X, nor that the text is about to highlight how much more sensible, brave, and moral BP is than other members of the Illuminati, etc. For a book so concerned with moral ambiguity, the narrative too often is willing to communicate which choices or perspectives are the wrong ones.
Obviously the first of your two favorite Thor moments is when he Throws Moljnir around the sun and back which was so incredibly awesome but what was your second favorite Thor moment? I can’t think of another one that specifically stands out.
Loved this vid! My hubby watches booktube with me sometimes but he actually watched and was fully invested in this one. He loves reading marvel comics, he just finished Old Man Logan. He hasn’t read these yet so we both are now. I always wanted to read Secret Wars but had no clue to start here so this was super helpful. Also you guys inspired me to try manga. I just bought Full Metal Alchemist and am going to order Vinland Saga.

Seanreadscomics it was the Jeff Lemire series! I didn’t even realize it was Jeff Lemire. I just finished his Descender series with Dustin Nguyen which I looooved! Right now the hubby is reading Deadpool vs Gambit. I just got him the Legion Omnibus so he is super excited for that one.

As it‘s from 2019 and something has happend in the last 4 years now, I’d like to ask if your recommendations for the omnibus are still the running order or if Hickmans Avengers Complete Collection (1-5) pretty much covers all of the Hickmans Avengers, New Avengers, Infinity and Secret War storyline?

the Hickman Avengers complete collections include all the Avengers, New Avengers and Infinity issues (and in the correct reading order too)
however it doesn’t include Secret Wars (2015) so you you have to still get a copy of that
I like to call this Sundays With Sean 🌠. Where we learn a lil comic history & which books we should give a read too. Funny thing is I been watching some origin stories of spiderman & this video is such a great thing cuz theres a lot I don't know about the many avengers stories. Great video... You've just cost me lots of money 'cos now I'm going to have to buy all this. I loved Hickman's F4, back in the day, and have resisted his Avengers for years and years because I thought I was 'out of comics'... but now, thanks to you, I'm going to have to make my wife very angry....

I read these books when they first came out years ago. I started re reading Hickmans story run again last year and took a break after infinity around September. I just got back to reading new avengers and I’m confused af lol

@@hellothere_24 I did and it does tie in to secret wars but I sold them when the Hickman omni reprints were announced. The event is collected in the second volume.
I just wish Marvel had stayed as good. It is hard for me to read them right now. DC is killing it at the moment. But for sure New Avengers was amazing. I am still too old school with comics. I need to get more collections so I can read. I have too many long boxes at this point anyway.
Im new to reading Avengers and just got the 2 Hickman omnis. I was wondering if theres something i should read before these or just jump right in ? Love the video and just subscribed !!!
How does the paper quality of the hardcovers compare to the omnibus?
Am I being thick or is issue 13 of Avengers missing from the hardcovers? Volume 2 includes the same material as the Infinity hardcover, and volume 1 has everything before. Volume 1 is rarer than Unicorn facts so I am looking at picking up trades for this, but the trades only get you up to issues 12 for some reason.

I see a lot of people talking about "reading order". I did Unlimited and just read the issues based on release date. Is this incorrect? I'm new to these sort of comics.

Hichman sucks. Through him and Bendis, I have been reading comics for a few years. For me, in Poland, the market is flooded with comics Hichman and Bendis. I can not find Aaron or Cates, and they are great writers
Is this new readers friendly?
I say that it is. Just a heads-up - for the Avengers book, expect a larger cast of characters and the team will shuffle characters around throughout the run. For the New Avengers book, expect the main cast to relatively stay the same. Hickman doe play with more cosmic aspects of the Marvel Universe and the story can be very out there, but he makes it easy to understand who this group of characters are, who they’re fighting, character motivations, etc. It may seem overwhelming, but it’s a straightforward run and definitely a good run for new readers.
