I really appreciate this. I was in my head feeling not good enough, and this reminded me that I’m not a mind reader. There are a million reasons why someone can’t step up to the plate, so you shouldn’t beat yourself up for it.

Of course the mother's frustration is warranted but I think the larger, somewhat sadder issue is that we collectively haven't seen more examples of how to teach consequences or discipline without violating our children's (who will use these examples to navigate their lives and existence) boundaries. Or practice reacting vs responding or the importance of our own voices or how to correct our behavior without beating ourselves up. Yes, this situation for them may not be that serious. But I know for sure that someone with similar experiences could have a future where they now hear a voice telling themselves they're dumb whenever they make a mistake. Words matter...especially from parents, that's all.
