  • Today, MONOCHROME goes to Saignelégier, Switzerland, with Maurice Lacroix.
With its "Masterpiece" collection, Maurice Lacroix revealed several watches with unconventional displays of the time. Think about the surprising Roue Carrée watch, with its small seconds actuated by a square-wheel, or the Mysterious Seconds watch, with its floating, non-mechanically linked seconds hand. The "accessible luxury" manufacture, which produces some of its most complex movements internally, has a tradition for such original, surprising and fascinating complications that make time-reading more spectacular.
Maurice Lacroix is now infusing this original and signature spirit into its successful luxury sports watch collection, the Aikon. At first sight, the new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Mercury seems like a standard watch, with a classical display of the time. Still, there is much more than meets the eyes in this new timepiece. It indeed stands out with its patented "Free-Hand" display. Let's have a closer look at the Aikon Mercury.

Beautiful watch, love the innovation in the watch, but at 44mm and a lug-to-lug length exceeding >50mm, this is gigantic. I can understand large watches when smaller alternatives exist to fill a niche, but no alternative to this Free-Hand watch exists (thanks to the nature of patents), and it excludes a very large portion of clients. That is a shame. I hope ML finds a way to make the "Free-Hand" mechanism smaller since I suspect that is the reason for this size.

    Whats the recommended wrist size?

Well, that's impossible for us to say. That depends on more than just circumference. Things like the shape of one's wrist is also a factor that will dictacte if it can be worn comfortably or not. Given the fact the case is 44mm in diameter, yet has an integrated bracelet which angles downwards from the case quite sharply, our indication would be that it wears like a 42mm watch with a non-integrated bracelet and as such could give you an idea if it fits you or not.
