I gift my villagers a wrapped iron wall lamp every day and that’s how I’ve gotten all my photos. I didn’t know about the villager home space thing though, but I never give them additional furniture anyway so it should be fine.
I gave Katt Cat Food and it has stayed up since I did the tutorial. Unfortunately I also gave them two apple smoothies that are now on the table and I want them gone, Cat Food only.
Fun idea if your villager’s house is already ruined: fill their ENTIRE inventory with the fossils so their home empties out, and then slowly replace each original piece of furniture in the house. There’s no guarantee it’ll be an exact replica, but you could try maybe? Im gonna test it out with someone i dont care too much for because ive ruined Poppy’s house with clothing :(
Pretty sure she just confirmed that filling with fossils doesn't make them throw out furniture. I don't know if it's more that once it's full of fossils and you start gifting furniture it's then guaranteed they'll replace the new with the old though. Villagers are terrible at placing it though from my experience. I tried giving Sterling(one of my first 2) a nice custom wooden bed to replace the friggin sleeping bag. Kept the sleeping bag and the new bed was in the middle of the opposite wall, with the pillow closer to the door. Such bad placement. I have his photo now so he'll be leaving at some point. I just can't stand how bad his interior is.

What I do is wrap: 3 non-native fruits, 5 pumpkins or 6 coconuts I thought the value had of gifts to be 1500+ bells to get the max amount of points. So I’ve been sticking to that and I have over 20 villagers photos!
I always try to gift them furniture items that suit their home interior. For example: I have Deirdre and her house is mostly wood/woodenblock furniture with lots of browns. In the beginning she had only a sleeping bag, so I made her a wooden bed (didn't have the block diy one) and customized it with a donut pattern to make it more brown and it looks pretty good in her house.
This makes a lot of sense. My favorite villager is my Judy, and I've been giving her clothing items. Then, once when one of my other villagers told me that she was sick, I bought her some medicine and went over to her house, HALF THE STUFF WAS THE CLOTHES I GAVE HER!! Anyway, thanks for the pointer!
I once made mistake of selling Fauna a wheelchair, and she replaced her wooden chair with it, so I gave her a new wooden chair to replace the wheelchair. It worked!
Gifting them giant clams (900 bells), conches (700 bells), coral (500 bells) or Venus combs (300 bells) all ensure a reciprocal gift from the villager without ruining their home interior and you will ultimately receive their framed picture in time. And a cheeky way to catalogue an item you potentially don't have is when a villager asks you to deliver a present (either an apology or a "just because" one), open it then re-wrap with wrapping paper from Nook's Cranny. When you deliver it to the designated villager, they're none the wiser and it doesn't negatively impact the friendship points gained from the villager requesting your help. You just can't swap the gift item if it's something you don't want your villager to wear (like a baby romper on a Smug villager, for instance).
having one of the more narcissistic gifts out there being given to you for purchasing thousands of bell’s worth of items is definitely a worthy trade in my opinion

I gave them nets instead of toys. It’s so cute watching them carry around the tools that they are gifted. They also display the nets in their houses. It doesn’t mess up their interiors so far...
I've been giving them wrapped iron wall lamps and got four villagers' photos in two weeks! They sell for 3400 but barely use any resources (4 iron 2 clay), and since they are wall furniture the villagers don't display them in their homes. Works like a charm!
I think it's good to note that it should be assessed fossils that (when placed) take up a 2x2 grid slot. I believe that the smaller fossils will act as furniture and the villager will place it in their home. I could be wrong here though since I never gifted my villager a 1x1 fossil, but just something to keep in mind - just in case.

I also have great relationships with each of them. It helps to gift them items you know they will love. Higher priced items definitely make a difference. I have about 10 million bells in the game and spare no expense with them, so they get some really sweet gifts.
Personally I use the Iron wall lamp, it’s a furniture idem that doesn’t get displayed, and gets a full reward with all the points! It’s also simple to craft so I don’t need to worry about resources.

My absolute favorite villager house is Mathilda's. There's just something about a sweet and loving goth kangaroo mommy that delights my little heart. I immediately ran back to my house to gift her my pink dollhouse for her baby and I made a playground outside 🥰

In the app anch guide if you click a villager and the present icon you can see what specific gifts your villagers like you will get extra points if you wrap it.
I got a random photo from Stitches when I returned to him a lost item. Didn’t think my friendship with him was high enough since I tend to just ignore him. Marshal and Sprinkle, my favorites who I’ve been talking to and gifting everyday still won’t give me their photo. 😑
I don't like how they accidentally made the villagers really superficial in this game. They like you more only if you give them material gifts, and the more expensive it is, overall the more they'll like you for giving it to them. It's sad and annoying
I think it would be nice if they liked the gift more if you created it yourself with harder to gather materials and also customised it. It shows you went to the effort of getting the materials and paid for custom kits too. Maybe even a bonus if it's in a colour or stain they like. They could possibly comment on that too so you'd be able to figure it out. Like 'Thanks, I favour cool tones more than warm though.' 'Thanks so much, what a nice cool colour. Light blue is my favourite' Bit more refined in the speech, but you get the gist. I think it would also then be cool if when you are best friends, they could ask you to redesign their house. You'd be given the list of original furniture in the inventory screen if you wanted to set it back to how it was, but you could also use anything in your catalogue to actually redesign.
@Larkspur that reminds me of Happy Home Designer. I love that game. You can decorate your clients’ (villagers’) homes and in New Leaf, they would actually request that you bring them certain furniture items. I wish that they would have brought that element into New Horizons. It gave the villagers more personality and them were more fun to hang around.
OK I was playing animal Crossing as I was watching and I just found out a random feature I want to say: if you show off of fish or any animal that you can catch to a villager, they will clap.
They also used to clap if you played a musical instrument on display in their house (New Leaf). This has been removed from New Horizons which I think is a terrible pity.
by far my favourite gift to give is an iron wall lamp! especially when it's wrapped, it gives the max amount of points because of it's sell value and the fact that it's furniture. PLUS villagers don't display wall items, so you're completely safe from ruining their house with junk
Omg I have been doing it wrong. I thought giving them gifts will change the interior of their house on HOW U WANT IT. I know it sounds stupid but I learned my lessons. It’s my first time playing this game. that’s why some of their interior now is crap because of my gifts. Lol thank for this!
the good news is if you have the dlc youll eventually be able to remodel your neighbors houses. the furniture thing is good though, i was giving them fossils instead because i completed the museum and i had enough money so selling them wouldnt be a huge benefit to me
i got maples photo after i delivered a gift to another villager for her. so random and unexpected but i was so happy. i do talk to her every day tbh but i didn’t give her that many gifts so my friendship level must’ve been naturally very high
Update: 2.5 version I keep giving them wrap fruit (3 pieces), it still works. I think it’s the easiest way, shake a tree pick up the 3 fruits wrap them and move to the next tree. I know that with de HHP DLC you can design their houses but maybe you don’t have that option. I honestly don’t care about disturbing their houses, I just think it’s much easier that way. Fun fact: if a villager is visiting you and you have their Photo displayed at your main room and you show them that you have it, they will ask you to do a home tour
Additionally, if a villager asked to trade/buy an item or ask if you can catch something for them, don't accept their request. It's most likely that after you gave them the requested item/fish/bugs they will display it in their house, so don't always say yes.
I know! I refuse to give him anything that'll mess his house up. I'm already stressed he displayed a dress I gave him. Why display clothes when they have closets?!

Sometimes when I get down lower on the list, they have told me some of my gifts weren’t something they thought they could “pull off.” Not going there anymore! I want happy happy villagers! I never thought about the destroying their homes part, but is a good point. What I do is, for example, Tybalt like sports, so I always gift him sports stuff, and I thought doing that would give me the probability to have his photo.

I've been gifted photos by all my (5) villagers, 2 from Pate and 3 from Chester. He gave me 2 photos in one day last week. I've only been playing for a little over 2 months.
If you get the app animal crossing guide when you click on the villagers it will tell you that villagers preference in gifts basically there wishlist and once you get that item you can like “check it off” I love it it’s also helpful for so many other things (turnip calculator) and more!
accidentally gave Wolfgang a floor light. I regret it ever since. Also, I gave him a gift and he replaced his record player w/it and the music in his house stopped playing. I was so sad cause I like the song. I gifted him the same record player hoping he would put it out and play the song again. It worked. I figure if you accidentally mess up their house, giving them the same item they replaced your gift with will help restore the look of their house to the original state.
OK. Looks like I will be gifting Ankha a new golden toilet because Sprocket gifted her a microphone and her golden toilet disappeared. I was not happy about that. I got her photo, but I like giving her things.

I prefer them as a sort of record for who has lived in my town/island. Yeah you can get posters now, but the photos are just more authentic. I'd never buy or sell them.

I just started playing, and I only have four villagers so far (though Fauna will move in tomorrow). I have Billy Renèe, Papi, and Peggy (who was moving in today, so her place was still in boxes). Renee's exterior is really cool, but her interior is a bit loud for me. Billy's flooring and walls are amazing, but he could use a little more furniture. Again, don't know about Fauna or Peggy, but I think my favorite so far is Papi. I would probably go for some hardwood floors if it were my own house, but his bed and his couch are FREAKING AMAZING and I'm so jealous! I'm hoping I get the DIY recipe for his furniture eventually.

I bully my favorite villagers more than anyone else, it's a bit entertaining.
I got a random photo from Stitches when I returned to him a lost item. Didn’t think my friendship with him was high enough since I tend to just ignore him. Marshal and Sprinkle, my favorites who I’ve been talking to and gifting everyday still won’t give me their photo. 😑
I don't like how they accidentally made the villagers really superficial in this game. They like you more only if you give them material gifts, and the more expensive it is, overall the more they'll like you for giving it to them. It's sad and annoying
I think it would be nice if they liked the gift more if you created it yourself with harder to gather materials and also customised it. It shows you went to the effort of getting the materials and paid for custom kits too. Maybe even a bonus if it's in a colour or stain they like. They could possibly comment on that too so you'd be able to figure it out. Like 'Thanks, I favour cool tones more than warm though.' 'Thanks so much, what a nice cool colour. Light blue is my favourite'

I think it would also then be cool if when you are best friends, they could ask you to redesign their house. You'd be given the list of original furniture in the inventory screen if you wanted to set it back to how it was, but you could also use anything in your catalogue to actually redesign.

You can decorate your clients’ (villagers’) homes and in New Leaf, they would actually request that you bring them certain furniture items. I wish that they would have brought that element into New Horizons. It gave the villagers more personality and them were more fun to hang around.

They also used to clap if you played a musical instrument on display in their house (New Leaf). This has been removed from New Horizons which I think is a terrible pity.
by far my favourite gift to give is an iron wall lamp! especially when it's wrapped, it gives the max amount of points because of it's sell value and the fact that it's furniture. PLUS villagers don't display wall items, so you're completely safe from ruining their house with junk

the good news is if you have the dlc youll eventually be able to remodel your neighbors houses. the furniture thing is good though, i was giving them fossils instead because i completed the museum and i had enough money so selling them wouldnt be a huge benefit to me

I keep giving them wrap fruit (3 pieces), it still works. I think it’s the easiest way, shake a tree pick up the 3 fruits wrap them and move to the next tree. I know that with de HHP DLC you can design their houses but maybe you don’t have that option. I honestly don’t care about disturbing their houses, I just think it’s much easier that way.
Fun fact: if a villager is visiting you and you have their Photo displayed at your main room and you show them that you have it, they will ask you to do a home tour
Raymond didnt give me his photo until I gave him a ROYAL CROWN and he hardly even wears it 😔
Additionally, if a villager asked to trade/buy an item or ask if you can catch something for them, don't accept their request. It's most likely that after you gave them the requested item/fish/bugs they will display it in their house, so don't always say yes.
seeing Wolfgang’s home look so pristine is weird because I’ve absolutely destroyed his, worth it though for the outfits 😎

I never thought about the destroying their homes part, but is a good point. What I do is, for example, Tybalt like sports, so I always gift him sports stuff, and I thought doing that would give me the probability to have his photo.
Quick question: how long does it take to get a repeat photo? I've seen lots of conflicting data online about this, but I'm curious to know how long it would take to get repeat photos from villagers. :)
Supposedly it's once they've given you 60 gifts, then you have the chance to get the photo again assuming you have the friendship levels for it
I've been gifted photos by all my (5) villagers, 2 from Pate and 3 from Chester. He gave me 2 photos in one day last week. I've only been playing for a little over 2 months.

If you get the app animal crossing guide when you click on the villagers it will tell you that villagers preference in gifts basically there wishlist and once you get that item you can like “check it off” I love it it’s also helpful for so many other things (turnip calculator) and more!

accidentally gave Wolfgang a floor light. I regret it ever since. Also, I gave him a gift and he replaced his record player w/it and the music in his house stopped playing. I was so sad cause I like the song. I gifted him the same record player hoping he would put it out and play the song again. It worked. I figure if you accidentally mess up their house, giving them the same item they replaced your gift with will help restore the look of their house to the original state.
OK. Looks like I will be gifting Ankha a new golden toilet because Sprocket gifted her a microphone and her golden toilet disappeared. I was not happy about that. I got her photo, but I like giving her things.

One of my favorite things to do is give my villagers gifts that I think will match their house and then I wait to see where they put them. I didn’t know you could wrack up friendship points tho! Thanks for the info :)
That's what I do to. Now seeing most gift thing with the intent to get photos. I gift based on personalities and styles.
The real reason people get villager photos is to trade them for 400 nmt.
I prefer them as a sort of record for who has lived in my town/island. Yeah you can get posters now, but the photos are just more authentic. I'd never buy or sell them.
🤣🤣 I keep my first 2 photos I get from each villager then sell the extra 🤣 but NEVER for that much lol usually just WL items like clothes or furniture and always less than a 100 NMT

I just started playing, and I only have four villagers so far (though Fauna will move in tomorrow). I have Billy Renèe, Papi, and Peggy (who was moving in today, so her place was still in boxes). Renee's exterior is really cool, but her interior is a bit loud for me. Billy's flooring and walls are amazing, but he could use a little more furniture. Again, don't know about Fauna or Peggy, but I think my favorite so far is Papi. I would probably go for some hardwood floors if it were my own house, but his bed and his couch are FREAKING AMAZING and I'm so jealous! I'm hoping I get the DIY recipe for his furniture eventually.
