sir. your video of printer review should be TAUGHT as a benchmark of HOW TO REVIEW EVERY PRINTER or electronic equipment. superb job. short. to the point. you show all the major options. including the dreaded photo print. and touched all the major issues. seriously . hp should pay you nice bonus for this video.
We just received this printer and luckily your review was the first thing i watched. You answered any questions i might have had yet still kept it under 10 minutes. Your pace is great in that i never once had to hit the pause or rewind. Thanks again.
Great review! I have owned this printer now for a month and your review showed me about 4 features I didn't even realize existed. I particularly appreciate you covering the double sided scanning!
@Shresth Jakhwal I haven't really had any issues. It's been pretty reliable. I've been through about two sets of toner cartridges so far. No issues to really report other than maybe when you scan things, you gotta make sure that the paper is pretty straight and tight in the feeder. I think that the software that comes with the computer, HP Smart, is pretty useful and well-thought-out. In addition the print to computer from your mobile device is great as well. I think it's really well done. You would be happy with it. Keep in mind that I run a very small office of about two people.
A fantastic review. I couldn't have asked for a better review. I love how you get right to the point and include all relevant and extra information, like exact size of the printer in any configuration, just incase you need it. Great job. Keep it up.
100% agree! I was about to walk away on a good deal on this printer because marketing material listed max depth as 25.7 inches. Came here specifically hoping for the dimensions to be mentioned, and you covered them in detail!
Agree with you, I got a HP Color LaserJet mfp 281 and this has a double sided print but not scan, unfortunately I figured this out recently and plan to buy a new one now, as as you mentioned above - flipping over the paper all the time is quite annoying.
I guess it depends on your definition of reasonable. Yes, it can print color on glossy paper. If you're a photographer and want high-quality gallery prints, then I would say the quality isn't quite reasonable enough. Photos at home for personal mementos, probably fine. If you're printing a graphic for a school project or graphs on handouts for a work presentation then yes, I would say the quality is "reasonable." If you're printing advertising for a business, it's a toss-up depending if you're okay with a small-budget printing presentation style or are going for something more professional for higher-end customers.
hey phil, can you do a review of this printer again by showing ,how it went for 10 months, did any of your thoughts change for this printer. Thankyou Aian
Thanks for the in-depth review, extremely helpful. I just received mine along with the high capacity second tray. I trust this will serve my business needs as each set of mortgage loan documents is now averaging 200 pages consisting of both standard and legal size paper.
The set-up is spot on. I did it just following their directions. But...how do I DISABLE Wireless Direct Printing on this printer. I set it up, but I was told by internet provider that it is interfering with my wireless internet. I can't find directions anywhere that makes sense.
Extremely helpful review, and not only answered my key question (does it have an extra input tray to bypass the main tray), but other useful info as well. Thanks.
I loved the review, i do have 2 questions. 1. I am looking for a printer where i can fill a separate tray for label paper, normal printer paper and envelopes. Will this printer allow me to have a feed for all 3 without having to constantly swap out existing paper in the tray? 2. Can i use the multi-page copy that's on the top to copy to email? It's always tedious when i have to scan 1 page at a time when i'm trying to make digital copies, so if if i can feed a multi-page document and copy as a pdf right to my PC or email would be a very welcome feature.
I just purchased the Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fdw printer and your video help in many ways on how to set it up. The only thing that I would have liked if when you were saying where to go onto the internet to download the app, the photo's went by so fast it was difficult to try to follow where to click etc. Outside of that you did a wonderful job. I print a lot of letter and legal size documents so I love that the printer can determine which tray to pull it from. I did purchase the extra tray so I could have legal in one and letter in the other. The two questions I have that you might have an answer for, Almost 99% of my documents are printed in Black so why is my color toner going down if I'm only using the black? The other question, I was surprised that the top glass is only for the size of letter but not legal. I need to copy a legal size sheet, is there something I'm missing on how to do this? If I scan documents, will it scan full copies of the letter & legal? Sorry I haven't tried scanning yet but thought I'd ask you. KS from Oregon
Hm, the color toner could be used even for black and white prints, depending on your settings in the application sending the print job, for example Microsoft Word. The machine will usually print using color toner if the settings are set to color mode, even if the document looks black and white. Likewise, if you hit the color copy button, it'll print using the color cartridges (by mixing the colors to get black) regardless whether or not any other colors appear on the original. If you want to print using only the black toner, you should choose monochrome or black in the print/copy settings. You should also be able to set this as the default behavior. I haven't copied or scanned any legal size documents, but I believe if you use the automatic document feeder on top you can achieve this. After loading the document, text-side up in the top tray, tap the copy icon on the LCD. Then tap the gear icon in the bottom left to change the settings. There should be a size/paper setting where you can select "Legal size" from the dropdown. It would work the same way for scanning as well. As long as you select the correct paper size, you should be able to capture the whole document. Let me know if it works for you!
Hi, thank you for getting back to me so soon with an answer to my questions. You are wonderful!!! I will try that. I hope you get paid by HP for helping the public out there. You are amazing!!!
Yes, it will work on resume or average weight card stock paper. Make sure you use "digital" label sheets, or sheets that are compatible with the fuser heat used in a laser printer. Otherwise the fuser will melt the plastic layers and adhesives in your sheets.
Is setting custom paper sizes fairly easy? Trashing my canon and probably going to pick one of these up. We’re constantly printing different size labels for our business. Our house office jet works great but we need something more professional.
Yes, you can define customer paper sizes in the printer properties after the print dialog pops up when you click 'Print.' I know with labels sometimes there will be multiple labels on a sheet and most word processing software (like Microsoft Word) have the templates for different brands and label layouts built into the software. You'd need to select the brand and product number prior to filling out the template, then when you click print it should use the proper settings for that media type.
Appreciate the video. I've had this printer for about two weeks and I've been very happy with its ability. However, the toner cartridges are rather expensive and there aren't many non-oem options as of yet. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
@@JanelleSpeaks We weren't happy with this option over time. We ended up sending it back and going with a Xerox c405. We've been very pleased with this decision and the toner last so much longer.
Great review. Two questions: 1. What types of paper/ documents can you load into the printer. Labels, envelopes, brochures, glossy matte, photo paper? 2. Can you scan directly to cloud accounts like box, dropbox, Google drive?
1. There are many different paper types this printer accepts. Note that some paper sizes/types must be loaded in particular trays. Here is the paper/tray types and compatibility according to the specs: Media types: Paper (bond, brochure, colored, glossy, letterhead, photo, plain, pre-printed, pre-punched, recycled, rough), postcards, labels, envelopes, cardstock up to 110lb Media Sizes: Tray 1, Tray 2, Tray 3 (optional): A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, 16K, 10 x 15 cm, Oficio, postcards (JIS single, JIS double), envelopes (DL, C5, B5) Automatic duplexer: A4, B5, 16K, Oficio 2. No, the options for Scan To are limited to: USB Drive, Network Folder, E-mail, Computer, or SharePoint. I suppose you might be able to setup DropBox or OneDrive as a network folder and scan to it that way, but I'm not sure exactly the steps you'd need to go through to do that.
Hi The information super helpful, Like to ask a question that this printer work with HP envelop feeder as well ( F2G74A ) Because I like to print a lot of envelop. Thank you very much!
I bought this printer about 3 months ago and couldn't be happier with the performance. The print quality is very crisp with zero defects so far. The scan to email and network are effortless. I am really glad to go with HP as I was about to pull the trigger on another brand but thanks to this review as well as other forums I'm glad I chose the 479fdw.
Any issues with the feeder when scanning documents? I'll need to scan documents almost daily and I'm considering this printer. I've read some people report issues with paper jams and the feeder grabbing multiple pages at a time etc. Any such issues?
@@Simply_GenX to be fair I have not had any paper jamming nor multiple page grab issues after scanning hundreds of docs via the ADF but the skewed scans are absolutely unacceptable. Don't know if you have the option to test one in person at a local store but I would highly recommend before buying it. Make sure they have a good return policy. Good Luck!
@@googlereviewer2743 When you say skewed scans, what exactly does that mean? Are they off centred? Blurry? Not reflective of the actual size of the original? Faded print? Appreciate any feedback you might have. thanks!
I know it's been a while since you published this video, but I do have one question about this particular printer. Does this printer come with fully filled toner cartridges? Toner is expensive. Sorry about the rant. Thank you for posting this video, as it was your video in which I made my decision upon buying this printer. 👍
@@Mom2MrBabyHaikin So far I have been pleased with my new printer. I have not tried printing with photographic paper just yet. The only negative thus far was the eye watering price of the printer. I bought my printer for just under $1,600 US dollars.
Yikes! I thought $820 was eye watering... You bought this exact one or what did you end up getting? I'm trying to find similar Brother model to look at & it has to be easy to scan/copy & print type... I want drums on toner cartridges vs inside of printer... I'm overwhelmed.
The printer used to cost around $600 but HP recently increased the price on all of their laserjet printer line. The price is steep, especially when comparing to alternative options
Thanks Phil for the excellent review of the printer. I have recently got one and am pleased with its functions. Would you be able to throw some light as to how we can print smaller documents such as a cheque or visiting cards etc.?
Yes, smaller media like cards or specific sized photo paper can be loaded into the front opening feed tray shown at 1:15 and adjusting its width as shown at 1:18. Then in your document application (like Microsoft Word) in the print dialogue you have to specify the tray, paper type, and paper size prior to printing.
@Falcon2 I got mines from Best Buy. As soon as it was in stock, I had to. Its been out of stock for so long. Glad I was able to get my hands on one. I'll need to look up the extra tray on eBay.
Hi Phil, Please guide whether this printer is suitable to be purchased in 2022 as it's around 03 years old model. I'm looking to buy a color laserjet printer for home office that should be future-proof for coming 05 years at least. Thanks !
Very helpful review. Do you have the driver's package from when you just got the printer. I would love to get a copy of the older driver for this printer
Yes, laser printer paper or suitable card stock or other approved media (laminates, transfer paper, etc.) There is a detailed list that comes with the printer, or you can look it up on the HP website.
Since they are on sale, I've been trying to decide between this HP M479 ($399) and the Canon MF644 ($299) or MF743 ($364). All have pretty similar features. Would like to know which one does best with photos (but I do have a 6-color Epson inkjet). One plus for Canon is the 3 year warranty.
In very general terms, inkjets will most often outperform any color laser printer for photos. They work better with glossy papers and tend to give a better representation on varied types of paper because the ink blends better for smooth transitions. If you're looking for decent color prints for mass production and not gallery quality prints for artwork or display, then a color laserjet would probably be fine. In terms of quality, though, I haven't seen color prints off the two Canon printers you mentioned in person so it's hard to tell, without having a reference image, which performs the best of the three. Maybe if you find display models in the store you can print a test image from each and go from there!
@@ReviewedByPhil I ended up buying both the M479 and the M281 so I could try them both out. For black text, they both do the same thing. But for color photo prints, I found the M281 had better looking colors (color matching) than the M479 (looks dull). Also the m281 is silent when not printing, but the M479 has a loud fan that stays on (even when not printing) until the unit goes into sleep mode. I'm also hearing a noticeable high voltage electrical transformer sound from the M479 when it prints that I don't hear from the M281. After a weeks use, I was liking the M281 more, until it starting to give an error saying it was out of paper when it wasn't. After 2 calls to HP and some troubleshooting, they said it would have to be replaced.
@@fauguy23 Thanks for the follow up and additional comments on the printer's performance! I always find it interesting what other folks pick up on that I wouldn't have thought to mention. It's a great way to add to the conversation and gives everyone a bigger view of the whole picture. I'm sorry to hear that the M281 started giving you problems so quickly. Hopefully, it's a one-off issue and isn't indicative of a broader defect for that model, but it must be covered by the warranty still, if not by the place of purchase than at the very least a no-cost replacement from HP? I'd be curious to hear what their warranty claim experience is like.
@@ReviewedByPhil since it was only 1 week only, I ordered a new M281 from Amazon to be delivered, and sending the defective one back. HP said it would take about 2 weeks to get one from them, and it might be new or refurbished.
@@ReviewedByPhil I got in the new M281 from Amazon, so far so good after 1 day of use, still hope it doesn't have the same out of paper error after a while. Only feature missing his the 2 sided scan.
Excellent video. Just a simple question. What do the letters fdw stand for? I think f is for fax, w for wifi. What about f? I have seen both but I don't know the difference between M479fdw and M479dw? Again thanks for your help.
this is a great review thank you. i have a question if you could answer. in a scenario at the office, office workers use the printer for copying documents manually, either from automatic feeder or one by one from the scanner part. is it possible to save each copied document automatically to a network folder, digitally pdf or jpg?
Yes, there are two methods for configuring the Scan to Network Folder feature: (1) use the Scan to Network Folder Wizard (in Windows), which is installed in the HP program group for the printer as part of the full software installation, or (2) use the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS). You can find detailed instructions here: support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_6073069-6105666-16
That's been a great and really helpful review. Thank you Phil! One question, however, that is neither answered by the HP marketing stuff nor in your video: Does the Printer have full WiFi connectivity, meaning, does it fully integrate into a network with WiFi or do I need a cable to the Switch or Router? Or is the WiFi only for Direct Mobile Printing?
Yes, it is "full" WiFi - your router DHCP server will assign the printer its own IP address. No cable is required to be connected to a switch or router. The only wire required is the power cable! See 3:48 for a quick demo how to setup the printer on your WiFi network. The WiFi can *also* be used for direct mobile printing, though only one of these connection types is allowed at a time e.g. If you are connected to a phone for direct mobile printing, the printer will be disconnected from your primary WiFi network and vice versa.
Hm, are you talking about printing images that appear darker than what you see on your computer screen or more generally like black and white text? If your images are being printed out "darker" than what you see on your display, this usually indicates that the color/brightness/and contrast on the monitor aren't calibrated correctly. I don't know of any settings on the printer that would lighten prints, though you could try using "Eco mode" which uses less toner per print. Or you could try using photo editing software to lighten/brighten images before printing.
Thank you I really enjoyed how thorough the video was. Can you please tell me if I can print cardstock, photopaper and most importantly a windowed envelope? I need around 200 envelopes monthly with my logo on them and the Canon laser printer I purchased melted the window on the envelope. Thank you again.
Yes, you can print on cardstock and photopaper that is designed for laser printers. To my knowledge, there are specially spec'd window envelopes with a different type of plastic used designed to withstand the heat of a laser printer's toner bonding process, these for example: geni.us/Jdkkso [Amazon Affiliate Product Link] So look for media that is specifically marked for use with laser printers and not inkjet. Even so, HP doesn't *recommend* printing on envelopes with windows to avoid jams, but this doesn't mean it's not possible to do so. Just make sure to select the correct paper type from the dropdown in the print dialog. See here for paper loading instructions: support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m478-m479-series/19202514/model/19202521/document/c06389461
Nice review. I have recently inherited the previous gen model (M377DW) and have been exploring it's features. The secure USB storage is very interesting. I will make use of that. Thanks for the tip!
The starter cartridges are rated for about 1200 pages, so depending on whether you print black and white and color pages together or separately anywhere from 1200 - 2400 pages total (assuming you use equal amounts of color on each page).
This printer does work with a variety of media including glossy brochure paper, though I personally haven't tried it so don't have a good reference for the quality. In most cases, I think this printer would do well in a business setting, though if your primary business IS printing, I wouldn't know whether or not the print quality meets the requirements/standard for that. Conservatively, I'd say it'd probably do fine for proof drafts and samples, but isn't quite built for consistent high-volume daily printing.
What a great review. I started reading them all looking for a answer to my question but there are so many. May I get your help? I need to print loan documents that switch from letter size paper to legal size paper. Is there a setting for the printer to determine that I have legal in tray 1 and letter in tray 2 and switch by itself as needed? Or when I want to copy the same type of loan package is there a setting for the copy part to sense the correct paper size to print both? I have looked around but I don't know how to ask the question with correct terminology so I can't find the answer. Thanks again for the great review!
I love the review. I have a question. I am replacing the cartridge with a third-party cartridge and the cartridge policy is off. The printer says that I have a low cartridge when I already refilled it. Can you explain why it still doesn't work?
Because you are using a third-party cartridge that doesn't use HP's "data chip" the printer won't be able to determine the toner levels on your new cartridge. I don't know of a way to clear/reset the message, but you can set the printer to simply continue printing while it displays this message. To change the "Very Low" settings from the control panel: 1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon. 2. Scroll to and open the following menus: a. Supply Settings b. Black Cartridge or Color Cartridge c. Very Low Setting 3. Select the Continue option to set the printer to alert you that the toner cartridge is very low, but to continue printing.
To reset the printer: 1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon . 2. Scroll to and open the following menus: i. Printer Maintenance (Maintenance de l'imprimante) ii. Restore (Restaurer) iii. Restore Factory Defaults (Restaurer les paramètres par défaut) I believe this will allow you to go through the setup steps again when the printer restarts. Good luck!
Hello Phil, thanks a lot for this extraordinary video. As I‘m not that good in english, could you tell me exactly what settings I have to make regarding cartridge policy and protection. On or off? Thanks for your support and stay healthy!
I am thinking of buying this printer - thanks for the great review! Because of the kind of work I do I need to switch between 2 different types of paper quite a bit. If I load paper into the secondary tray/feeder, will it know to by-pass the main paper tray (if you see what I mean?). Every time I print I don't want to have to tell my laptop which tray to use. Hope this makes sense! Thank you.
I believe the manual feed tray (Tray 1 that folds out from the front) overrides Tray 2 by default if any paper is loaded into it, when you have the paper source setting set to "printer auto select". This sounds like the setting you want to have for your situation.
Just another tip, in paper setup you can select the paper type for each tray and set it as the default setting, so for example if you want to use Tray 1 for glossy paper, set its paper type as glossy and then save it as the default. That way it'll know that whenever you use Tray 1 to expect glossy paper.
Hi, excellent review. I normally use a B&W laser printer as the cartridge never dries out. If I buy a colour printer will the ink dry out over the course of a year?
Hi. :) At the begining during the setup . I pressed IT Managed instead of Self Managed. What is the default User Access Code and Admin Access code. Is this Sign in menu there because I picked "IT Managed" option ? I even called to HP and they didn't know :D
thnaks for your review. One question: Sometimes the printer block/are not able to print when one of the toner is empty. For example the blue toner is empty. Would it be then still possible to print documents only in black and white or is then the printing blocked until the emoty toner is replaced?
Yes, you can select print monochrome and the printer will print in black and white, even if the color cartridges are empty. The setting you want is called "Print Black" in the Very Low setting sub-menu (see below). Enabling B&W printing only when a color cartridge is empty/low - From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon . Select one of the following options: ● Select the Stop option to set the printer to stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge. ● Select the Prompt option to set the printer to stop printing and prompt you to replace the toner cartridge. You can acknowledge the prompt and continue printing. ● Select the Continue option to set the printer to alert you that the toner cartridge is very low, but to continue printing. ● (For Color Cartridges) Select the Print Black option to set the printer to alert you that the toner cartridge is very low, but to continue printing using black only. Perfect review !!! Do You know how is it: If print is Black only - is there sureness that goes the black toner only? Is it not mixed from colour toners?
Phil, thank you for the presentation. Can you let me know if you can have the printer connected to the network for on network workstations and can it also be accessed by wireless laptops and mobile phone users to print. I have the old Pro 476dw and it will not do both at once. I was hoping this one does. Can you let me know? THanks Rick
Hi Phil, it‘s me again ;). Well, I‘ve bought the printer (HP M479fdw), it‘s very heavy but looks cool, Actually I’m very satisfied with the print quality and also with the software, but I have some questions/issues regarding the copy/scan functionality... and I hope you can maybe help me with this. This printer has a 1200x1200dpi flat bed scanner... It doesn’t matter if I’m executing the scan/copy over the printer menu or over the HP Smart software, the max. dpi what I can select is only 600dpi... I’ve even installed the HP software on my PC, there I can only select 300dpi from them HP scan sw. And also, it is different if I’m copying something then is the quality not really good... the print is much brighter/paler as the original...(I didn’t changed the brightness settings). So, my first problem is, that I can’t find the 1200dpi option on the printer, and the Print-out for copies are visible a poorer quality as the original.... Do you have and hints/Tipps for me? Thank you.
I found the answer for my question. The scan with 1200dpi on this printer will only work via computer! 1. Install the HP software to your PC -especially the program called “HP Scan” 2. Start HPScan (your printer driver should be also up to date) 3. Select one predefined option, or even better: create a new scan profile 4. Select for Input “scan from glass “ (flatbed) 5. Go to the menu “More”, and here under Picture and Quality now it is possible to select 1200dpi 6. The setting can be saved, and reused anytime On all other cases only 600dpi (or less) is available. Well, a little bit strange, how HP “designed” this, but at least I know now what to do... Note: to scan with 1200dpi is very slow, so think twice if you really need this... maybe time to time, when you want to scan a picture in high quality. So is good to know how ;)
@Habtom Tekle Hi Habtom! Thanks for the feedback. I included this information briefly at 8:21 in the video, so you may have missed it. The black cartridge is good for about 2400 pages of prints and the color cartridges about 2100 pages each. The cost per print averages out to about 3-4 cents per page, so you can do the math. I generally don't talk about price in my videos because they fluctuate a lot, may be higher or lower depending on the time of year, and just become out-of-date over time as new products replace old ones.
Hi all....I am looking into this Laser printer. my question on laser printers is do the toner cartridges become dried up or unusable if the printer is not used every day I am SOOO tired of INK........Very good review by the way
Hi there! As a general rule, laser printer toner does not "dry up" or go bad over time so you can print as often or as infrequently as you need to and the cartridge will continue to print until there is no toner left. The only exception would be if the cartridge was stored improperly, for example in very hot, humid, or very cold conditions, if it got wet, for example in a flood, where there may be some damage to the cartridge itself, then the life and usability of it may be impacted.
Sorry, I can't offer any insight on that comparison at the moment. I haven't tried any of the Canon MF740 series printers myself, so I don't really have a good reference for judging its performance or color quality, at least not objectively from experience.
If I had a document that consisted of both legal and letter side paper, do you know if I can print them simultaneously, or you I have to print it manually by dividing the different size papers?
Yes, you can copy or scan mixed-sized documents and load the different sizes of paper in different trays (e.g. Legal in Tray 1 and Letter in Tray 2). From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Copy. Select More Options/Settings. Open the Original Size menu and select the mixed size option: *Mixed Letter/Legal* If you are printing from a digital file, like a PDF, using Adobe Acrobat you can print mixed size documents by following these instructions: helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/print-mixed-page-sizes-acrobat.html
No, I haven't seen that size in the supported media charts. I believe the largest paper size is 11x14. However, since the width fits into the manual load tray, there may be a way that you can define a custom size for that format, but I don't have any additional information on that.
Yes, other than the high cost of toner, which we try to keep down by using non-OEM (third-party) cartridges, I haven't had any issues with it. Works well for what we need it for.
Hi Phil! Great review! Thank you! One question... I saw you scan to a USB drive in your review... can you scan to computer? I would assume yes but want to confirm. I am torn between this HP model and the Brother MFC-L3770CDW. By any chance, have you reviewed the Brother?
Yes, you can scan to a networked computer or directly connected computer in addition to the USB drive. At 4:01, you can see the scan options include: e-mail, network folder, Sharepoint, and computer (which is partially cutoff in the video). I didn't review the MFC-L3770CDEW, but I do have a video up on the HL-L3290CDW here: ruclips.net/video/wJTb0BC3mbk/видео.html It's similar to the L3770 but has an auto document-feeder tray so is a better apples-to-apples comparison the the HP model in this video, though it lacks a fax feature. I found the control panel on the HP printer to be more user friendly because it's a touch screen. The sequential nested menus of the Brother LCDs are a bit more tedious to navigate. In terms of print performance, black and white prints and speed were similar, though Brother's was a hair faster. I didn't like that there wasn't a USB connection option on the Brother printer, even though it wasn't an issue for me, and its color photo performance was not as good as the HP's, but I guess it would depend on what you plan on using the printer for.
@@ReviewedByPhil Thanks for responding Phil! So I ended up purchasing the HP printer based on your review (kudos to Phil!). After installing and setup, I see the scan options (computer) but it says "no computers found" when I try to scan. Trying to figure out why it won't. My previous all-in-one printer (HP photosmart 7520) was also connected wirelessly and I had no issues scanning to computer. I noted above you mention "directly connected computer" but I have no more open USB ports on the back on my iMac. Any ideas?
@@mindys3401 Hm, without being able to see your exact setup, it's hard to be able to tell what the exact problem is, but no, you don't need to directly connect a USB cable to scan to a computer as it can be done wirelessly. So it sounds like you have the printer connected to your WiFi as shown at 3:49. Have you also installed the printer software package from HP (see 2:41)? If so, there should be a manage Scan To option in the HP software that might fix your issue. HP support may be able to give you further support if that doesn't work for you.
First of all, thank you for this in-depth review. I have a question. Can I install and use compatible non-genuine toner cartridges or will the printer reject them?
No, I don't think so. While you can buy "chip-less" 3rd-party (non-genuine) toner, you'll still need to remove the chip from your spent OEM cartridge and install it into the new chip-less cartridge (it should have a slot). I've seen a couple videos demoing this and it looks pretty easy, but I haven't performed this replacement myself.
Nice review. I only had problems trying to setting up the "scan to folder" option. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. Why the heck they had to do it so complicated? it's stupid. Every time I try to activate this option to leave it on, the EWS will just give an unknown error, most of the time referred to network issues. But I don't any problems with sharing the folder with other devices. It's simply stupid and it doesn't work unless you do "something else". I even had to mark an option in "admin settings" in the security page to be able to scan from my laptop. WTF!
Yes, you can load different paper into the different trays and specify at the time of printing which tray to use, or set the printer properties to the specific paper type you've loaded and set the printer to auto-select the tray based on the paper size.
sir. your video of printer review should be TAUGHT as a benchmark of HOW TO REVIEW EVERY PRINTER
or electronic equipment.
superb job.

to the point.
you show all the major options. including the dreaded photo print.
and touched all the major issues.
seriously .
hp should pay you nice bonus for this video.
We just received this printer and luckily your review was the first thing i watched. You answered any questions i might have had yet still kept it under 10 minutes. Your pace is great in that i never once had to hit the pause or rewind. Thanks again.
Glad you found the review useful! Hope you enjoy the printer!
The print quality is absolutely unreal! Very nice!
Great review! I have owned this printer now for a month and your review showed me about 4 features I didn't even realize existed. I particularly appreciate you covering the double sided scanning!
Thanks and you're welcome! I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Can you turn off the double sided scanning?
One of the best reviews, wish they were all this good!
I just purchased this all-in-one and I'm super pleased. I must say, this was a great review! Excellent job!
I have the exactly the same and it has not been a year since purchase and the touch screen stop to work now.
@Matthew Williams not very thick one but it can do photo paper.
A fantastic review. I couldn't have asked for a better review. I love how you get right to the point and include all relevant and extra information, like exact size of the printer in any configuration, just incase you need it. Great job. Keep it up.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
100% agree! I was about to walk away on a good deal on this printer because marketing material listed max depth as 25.7 inches. Came here specifically hoping for the dimensions to be mentioned, and you covered them in detail!
THANK YOU!!! Excellent review! Helped me decide to go ahead with my purchase. HP just got a customer thanks to you!
You're welcome. Hope you enjoy your new printer!
Thanks for doing this review. Independent printer reviews are quire rare these days. So thanks again.
Hi from France. Your video decided me to pick this model for my showroom/office. Well worth the money so far. So, thanks!
Enjoy!
Phill. You are by far the best Instructor I have come across thus far! keep out the good work...
Thank you! I will!
WOW THE PHOTO QUALITY
In the first couple of minutes I already learned more than the HP help videos....great video !!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Excellent review. So glad you covered double sided scanning. Such a hassle to flip over paper. Thank you.
Agree with you, I got a HP Color LaserJet mfp 281 and this has a double sided print but not scan, unfortunately I figured this out recently and plan to buy a new one now, as as you mentioned above - flipping over the paper all the time is quite annoying.
I wonder if it can output reasonable quality photos on glossy paper?
Yes, thank you for this rare genuine and intelligent review.
Great review. Just bought this for my wife. May circle back with questions.
definetly putting money on the side for this, what I need
hey phil, can you do a review of this printer again by showing ,how it went for 10 months, did any of your thoughts change for this printer.
Thankyou
Aian
Thanks for the in-depth review, extremely helpful. I just received mine along with the high capacity second tray. I trust this will serve my business needs as each set of mortgage loan documents is now averaging 200 pages consisting of both standard and legal size paper.
thanks for the thorough review
No problem!
Nice Explanation,
I have on query that does the printer has feature of searchable scan
Your review style is enjoyable and very helpful. Thanks for putting the time in on this. Great work.
Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you found it helpful.
The set-up is spot on. I did it just following their directions. But...how do I DISABLE Wireless Direct Printing on this printer. I set it up, but I was told by internet provider that it is interfering with my wireless internet. I can't find directions anywhere that makes sense.
Well done Phil. Clear, informative and personable. Well done. Wishing you all the best mate. Aussie Pete
Thanks, Pete! Appreciate it. Cheers from the US 😊
One of the best review ever, good job man.
Which All-in-one laser printer has the best photo quality? Thanks
Can you do a video with how this prints stickers or labels. Or even on thicker stock paper.
This is how you do a review. Excellent work!
Much appreciated!
Appreciate the video. I've had this printer for about two weeks and I've been very happy with its ability. However, the toner cartridges are rather expensive and there aren't many non-oem options as of yet. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
How did the toners do? Did they last long enough?
@@JanelleSpeaks We weren't happy with this option over time. We ended up sending it back and going with a Xerox c405. We've been very pleased with this decision and the toner last so much longer.
That is my worry too. The cartridges are expensive.
this will help with starting as an amazon fba seller, printing those bar codes. been using inkjet printers my whole life as well
Hello, what do you think of the photo quality? Can it print photos and colors close to printing quality?
Great review. Two questions:
Here is the paper/tray types and compatibility according to the specs:
Media types: Paper (bond, brochure, colored, glossy, letterhead, photo, plain, pre-printed, pre-punched, recycled, rough), postcards, labels, envelopes, cardstock up to 110lb
Media Sizes:
Tray 1, Tray 2, Tray 3 (optional): A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, 16K, 10 x 15 cm, Oficio, postcards (JIS single, JIS double), envelopes (DL, C5, B5)
Automatic duplexer: A4, B5, 16K, Oficio
2. No, the options for Scan To are limited to: USB Drive, Network Folder, E-mail, Computer, or SharePoint. I suppose you might be able to setup DropBox or OneDrive as a network folder and scan to it that way, but I'm not sure exactly the steps you'd need to go through to do that.
like the printer but how good or friendly is it in terms of compatibility with UNIX- Like Operating Systems .. thx
Dude your overview/review video was excellent. Great job. Thanks for this.
Your review style is enjoyable and very helpful. Great work.
Thanks, much appreciated!
Hi The information super helpful, Like to ask a question that this printer work with HP envelop feeder as well ( F2G74A ) Because I like to print a lot of envelop. Thank you very much!
this printer is a beast, nothing to complain
Appreciate any feedback you might have. thanks!
@@googlereviewer2743 I'm assuming you have but did you try the steps outlined here: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05032740
@@Simply_GenX Off centred as in tilted diagonally. The scan quality is fine.
I know it's been a while since you published this video, but I do have one question about this particular printer. Does this printer come with fully filled toner cartridges? Toner is expensive. Sorry about the rant. Thank you for posting this video, as it was your video in which I made my decision upon buying this printer. 👍
Was it worth it? Stuck on wanting it, but more to color print, scan etc.
Just ordered mine. I'm excited for this upgrade!
@Falcon2 I got mines from Best Buy. As soon as it was in stock, I had to. Its been out of stock for so long. Glad I was able to get my hands on one. I'll need to look up the extra tray on eBay.
@Falcon2 thank you for sharing 😅 I'll need it.
Useful Printer color hp laserjet m479fdw review, friend
Hi Phil,
Please guide whether this printer is suitable to be purchased in 2022 as it's around 03 years old model.
I'm looking to buy a color laserjet printer for home office that should be future-proof for coming 05 years at least.
Thanks !
Great review! Very thorough and helpful-especially about the extra info of changing settings for using non-HP certified toners.
Thanks for watching and the positive feedback!
Very helpful review. Do you have the driver's package from when you just got the printer. I would love to get a copy of the older driver for this printer
Does this printer only print paper or it can print other materials as well? Thank you for your great review.
F - fax, D - duplex, W - Wireless. Here's the HP naming guide: www.cardunaloffice.com/ECI%20Pages/HP%20Printer%20Naming%20Guide%20Brochure.pdf
I’m buying this because of your review! Thank you!!
Word! Me to
this is a great review thank you. i have a question if you could answer.
in a scenario at the office, office workers use the printer for copying documents manually, either from automatic feeder or one by one from the scanner part.
is it possible to save each copied document automatically to a network folder, digitally pdf or jpg?
I found out from a Best Buy review that HP puts a "W" at the end of their full wifi connectivity model printers too.
Thanks so much for the video. Super helpful. I have a question, is there a way to reduce the density of print. My printer prints on the dark side??
Hi Phil, Which do you think has better quality print (colored), this one or the brother laser printer you have reviewed?
This HP one has better color print quality, for sure.
@@ReviewedByPhil thanks Phil!

Nice review. I have recently inherited the previous gen model (M377DW) and have been exploring it's features. The secure USB storage is very interesting. I will make use of that. Thanks for the tip!
You're welcome and thanks for the compliment!
Great review! You answered all of my questions and I now feel confident going ahead and buying this printer. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback! Glad it was helpful and I hope you enjoy the printer!
I enjoyed ur review..I love dis printer..hw may pages will the 4 toners print combined altogether..e.g printing coloured pages all tru?
The starter cartridges are rated for about 1200 pages, so depending on whether you print black and white and color pages together or separately anywhere from 1200 - 2400 pages total (assuming you use equal amounts of color on each page).
I have a obituary/flyer/poster design/printing company. Do you think this printer would be a good addition?
This printer does work with a variety of media including glossy brochure paper, though I personally haven't tried it so don't have a good reference for the quality. In most cases, I think this printer would do well in a business setting, though if your primary business IS printing, I wouldn't know whether or not the print quality meets the requirements/standard for that. Conservatively, I'd say it'd probably do fine for proof drafts and samples, but isn't quite built for consistent high-volume daily printing.
Thanks for the review. It was very helpful. Direct and to the point with nice summary of features at the end.
To change the "Very Low" settings from the control panel:
1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon.
2. Scroll to and open the following menus:
a. Supply Settings
b. Black Cartridge or Color Cartridge
c. Very Low Setting
3. Select the Continue option to set the printer to alert you that the toner cartridge is very low, but to
continue printing.
I missed the setup and now have everything in French. how do you get back to setup?
To reset the printer:
1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, swipe the tab at the top of the screen downward to
open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon .
2. Scroll to and open the following menus:
i. Printer Maintenance (Maintenance de l'imprimante)
ii. Restore (Restaurer)
iii. Restore Factory Defaults (Restaurer les paramètres par défaut)
I believe this will allow you to go through the setup steps again when the printer restarts. Good luck!
Thanks a simple answer all it took.
Thanks for well made review 👍🏼. Can you please check if the fan turns of soon after it stops printing?
Yes, they run for a few seconds after printing but usually turn off after 3-5 seconds when printing is complete.
Thanksss. Very kind 🤘🤝
Nicely explained. I have a query.
Can the size of printing and level of contrast be modified by this printer?
Yes, you can change the scale/zoom of the print size and contrast in the settings of the print or copy menu when printing a document.
Hello Phil, thanks a lot for this extraordinary video. As I‘m not that good in english, could you tell me exactly what settings I have to make regarding cartridge policy and protection. On or off?
Thanks for your support and stay healthy!
For most users, it's fine to leave both the cartridge policy and cartridge protection settings off.
Tbh this is the best review code I’ve ever seen bro keep it up 👍🏻
Wow, thanks!
No, laser toner is a powder, not a liquid so whether black or color, the toner cannot "dry out" as it is already dry to begin with.
Very helpful presentation. How do I setup wireless connection? or did I miss isomething
See WiFi setup walk-through at 3:48. It's only a couple touches on the LCD to select your WiFi network, and then entering then password.
Can we use art board 210 gsm paper on this machine for photo printing.what is the speed of machine if we print per minute if print a4 210 gsm?thanx
Hi. :) At the begining during the setup . I pressed IT Managed instead of Self Managed. What is the default User Access Code and Admin Access code. Is this Sign in menu there because I picked "IT Managed" option ? I even called to HP and they didn't know :D
Your opinion on this printer versus the HP M281fdw which is at least $200 less expensive?
thnaks for your review.
Enabling B&W printing only when a color cartridge is empty/low -

4. Select one of the following options:
● Select the Stop option to set the printer to stop printing until you replace the toner cartridge.
● Select the Prompt option to set the printer to stop printing and prompt you to replace the toner

● Select the Continue option to set the printer to alert you that the toner cartridge is very low, but to
continue printing.
● (For Color Cartridges) Select the Print Black option to set the printer to alert you that the toner
cartridge is very low, but to continue printing using black only.
NOTE: The Low Threshold option allows you to define the level of ink that is
Perfect review !!! Do You know how is it: If print is Black only - is there sureness that goes the black toner only? Is it not mixed from colour toners?
As long as you set in your printer settings to print 'black and white,' only the black cartridge will be used.
Hi Phil, do you think you'll also have the chance to review the M480f?
1. Install the HP software to your PC -especially the program called “HP Scan”
2. Start HPScan (your printer driver should be also up to date)
3. Select one predefined option, or even better: create a new scan profile
4. Select for Input “scan from glass “ (flatbed)
5. Go to the menu “More”, and here under Picture and Quality now it is possible to select 1200dpi
6. The setting can be saved, and reused anytime
On all other cases only 600dpi (or less) is available.
Well, a little bit strange, how HP “designed” this, but at least I know now what to do...
Note: to scan with 1200dpi is very slow, so think twice if you really need this... maybe time to time, when you want to scan a picture in high quality. So is good to know how ;)
Thank you for this! This should be helpful to others who are looking for this information.
Great review. Currently, I have the HP Laser 148dw printer but would like to upgrade to this or similar priced system.
Thanks for the compliment! This printer is working great for me. Just wish the toner weren't so expensive :-/
How fast does it print number 10 envelopes and how many can you place in the tray?
10 envelopes takes about 30 seconds and you can load up to 10 envelopes at once in Tray 2.
Terrific review. I was wondering if the printer will still print if one of the cartridges is empty.
Yes, you can set it to do that in the "very low" toner setting.
ReviewedByPhil hey um, I didn’t write that message. Idk if someone is on my account or if it is a hack
Hp laserjet pro mfp 283mdf is good than hp color jet printer that you have reviewed or not

Nice video. Thanks. Just ordered this and will be here Wednesday. Is it to simple fax and does it has an address book?
How is the HP compared to the Canon MF744cdw? I heard that the Canon is much better in delivering color photos.
Sorry, I can't offer any insight on that comparison at the moment. I haven't tried any of the Canon MF740 series printers myself, so I don't really have a good reference for judging its performance or color quality, at least not objectively from experience.
Thanks for all the good printer reviews!
Amazing Review. We want more.
Very good review. I have one question regarding paper sizes. Does it print Tabloid (11x17) paper size?
No, I haven't seen that size in the supported media charts. I believe the largest paper size is 11x14. However, since the width fits into the manual load tray, there may be a way that you can define a custom size for that format, but I don't have any additional information on that.
Nice Review. Am asking kindly those who have bought and used the printer. Can you recommend it?
I mean, can I install non-genuine and without-chip toner cartridges?
No, I don't think so. While you can buy "chip-less" 3rd-party (non-genuine) toner, you'll still need to remove the chip from your spent OEM cartridge and install it into the new chip-less cartridge (it should have a slot). I've seen a couple videos demoing this and it looks pretty easy, but I haven't performed this replacement myself.
ReviewedByPhil thank you.
WTF!
First time I watched an entire video all the way through! Since their are two trays does that I mean I can use two different types of paper at once?
Yes, you can load different paper into the different trays and specify at the time of printing which tray to use, or set the printer properties to the specific paper type you've loaded and set the printer to auto-select the tray based on the paper size.
