|ABOUT|
I live and knit in Southern Ontario with my husband and my terrier. The name kuriaknits comes from my last name - Kurian. Kurian has Indian and Syrian origins and I feel lucky every day that my husband shared it with me.
Love all the sweater projects! The light green cabled one is gorgeous! Hope you are feeling better!
Erin - I feel like you about the cable on the sleeves of the moby sweater. If I were to knit the pattern, I would change the sleeves to be only the double moss stitch. I’m sure that would make me love the sweater more and wear it more if I modify it 😊
I find that Shibui Cloud is a non shedding mohair but its also a very thin light addition to the gage. Hardly needed to add any volume. But the amount of mohair overall seems perfect. i like it more than most mohairs. I’ve heard that the freezer helps to remove mohair projects for having to go back when knitting them. Ice is only used when needing to frog.
On the topic of the Barber cables - mine are also splitting. I think they do split eventually, esp if you use larger needle sizes. I tend to use small needles (rarely I'll use a US8 but most of the time I work on US5 or smaller) and I find that, to get the cord to stay on the small needle - esp given the drag of smaller stitches - that I have to push it on really tightly and re-push it as I move the stitches. In my experience, it's easier to transfer with larger stitches than smaller (less likelihood of the cable falling off mid-shift). I suggest you just cut the cable below the rip. I haven't done that yet but I will when I find it necessary. I have heard others suggest that the no-name ones aren't as good but I have the name brand ones and it's still happening.
Congrats on passing! Sorry you feel so bad-hope you get some relief soon. Happy Birthday Wishes to you! I’ve read that if you put your mohair sweater in the freezer it helps with the shedding but I’ve never tried that myself. Love, love the Tulip sweater-I’m definitely doing that one!
Ohh that's an interesting tip! Thank you!
I love Wellington Fibres. I went to their Spring Open house in 2019 and picked up some of their Wellington Autumn bulky colourway. I live in Kitchener and they are in West Montrose/Elora area. A short drive.
For the Moby sweater I would put a couple of rows of garter stitch at the start of the sleeve. Like you I don't like how the cable motif just starts out of nowhere but I also don't like the look of the moss stitch at right angles to the moss stitch on the body
I’m currently knitting Exploration Station by Stephen West
Hope you got the nutiden you wanted....I also missed the patreon only sale, and there was only one color I wanted last night, but I missed it. Next time!
I picked some up! I hope you get in next time!
@@kuriaknits Thank you. I already have plenty of nutiden, but I did want that aqua or the grey/purple. I'm glad you got yours!
Congrats on passing your exams! What will your research be? I’m intrigued with your specialty??? In response to your question on which mohair sheds less…I’ve used Holst Alpaca, Titicaca. It’s a lace fiber which I’ve used to pair with other fibres.
I am researching medieval built environment. specifically, i'm looking at the Cinque Ports in England post-plague to see how people adapted their environment when faced with strife.
Thanks for the recommendation!
I would personally do your sleeves as the pattern says
Having a cold after a stressful event like a PhD comprehensive is a classic body reaction. I recall in my first years as a tenure-track professor, I would get colds after the term ended and marking was finished.
Thank you for another lovely podcast. I know what you mean that the cable on the sleeve comes out of nowhere. I think I would do just the moss stitch on the sleeves too.
Thanks so much for putting out a podcast even when you're sick! You kept me company while inching through my own cable sleeve that's taking a million times long as it should...speaking of, I think the moss stitch sleeves are a fantastic idea. I don't think you're losing much with that single cable motif and I agree that it would bug me coming out of nowhere.
Congratulations on passing your candidacy! I started my PhD program in August, and I can totally relate to not having ANY free time. We're in this together!
Congrats to you! What are you planning to study?
@@kuriaknits I’m studying cancer biology and immunology! I’m currently rotating in a lab studying brain metastasis. What about you?
My grandma use to put Vicks on my feet then think socks before bed……did it to my kids they hated it as much as I did but it works….so much that my adult daughter will do it for herself when she’s got sinus issues. Stage but true may be worth a try good luck feel better.
I so enjoy your podcasts! I'm so glad I found you. Your knits are beautiful! Congratulations! Hope you feel better soon.
Great episode :) Can't wait to see more of your progress on your gift knits! Get well soon!
I always enjoy my podcast time listening to you! You mention a sweater quantity of yarn. How much do you consider a sweater quantity?
It depends on the yarn! The one that I find easiest is worsted. Usually I'll be safe with 6 skeins of a standard size (220m or so).
Congratulations on your progress. That's a LOT of reading. I know you are a medievalist(?) but what is your specialty? I just completed my first gift knitting- 22 hats for the entire family. Fun and a great way to use lots of small quantities of yarn, no two alike. I cast on my Kolmen hat today with the beautiful Suri yarn you gave to me earlier in the year. This one is for me! I hope you have a happy birthday, despite your cold.
I am studying medieval build environments. Basically how medieval english cities sustained themselves by exploiting and changing the environment.
22 hats is so many! Well done! Your family is lucky to have you.
Where in Ontario are you? I’m in the Windsor/Chatham area. I set my alarm for 1:30 AM to snag some Nutiden. Whenever I’ve done this in the past I have never had a problem purchasing however much I wanted. If you don’t manage to snag some let me know. I might be willing to part with some of my stash.
I'm in KW! I have a bunch of family in Windsor though, and thank you so much!!
Congrats 1st of all. I would make the dbl moss stitch and the motif but instead of the cable I would put one diamond like the middle of the front, could make it more interesting than just plain moss (petiteknit sweater)
Hi Emma. At about 26 mins when you were talking about the Tulip Guernsey, you said you used a crotchet edge to stop the rolling. Could you share more about that. Maybe a video you use.
I just did a row of single crochet around the edge. If you google "single crochet" you should find it!
1st of all, love your podcast and secondly if you will be ottawa, may I also suggest Wooltyme on Collande Rd. They have a great sale section. I have recently picked up Katia Royal Silk 10 pack and was looking at different tweed yarn including Rowan 10 packs but not enough for my size. And a 10 pack of Tove for 30$ which I plan to use for a skeindeer pattern.
