    I understand that this does not match people's recollections of '80s blues parties but as a piece of filmmaking, it's terriffic. It reminded me of every house party I've ever been to with dancing, music, romance, a little drama, some weird stuff going on outside, and a return to the real world in the morning. It was really all about the music, and that was great. I'm viewing this as a white American whose dance parties happened in the '60s and '70s. I don't know the culture, obviously, but I saw the universality of the represenation of youthful exuberance and budding romance.

    Utterly brilliant, glued to the TV & watched it last night with my wife who's 24 years younger than me, I'm 62 next week, and reminisced about the many blues parties that I went to in my youth, the great music the camaraderie struck up, the awesomel soundsystems oh & the food! Watching the other series's in what looks to be an excellent look at black life back in the day! Has it changed for us, yes but the racism where it exists is more subtle although since Brexit those with an axe to grind have found their bigoted voice, could be me though!

    • @RobOtic
      @RobOtic 3 года назад +2

      The various "sound systems" and the DJs and crews associated with them would go by different names. Channel One Sound System, for example, is still going strong today.
      In Lovers Rock, the DJ and crew that bring the sound system go by "Mercury Sound". When they chant "Mercury Sound", it's like how people might cheer and shout the name of a band or DJ.

    I was really looking forward to watching this and reminiscing. I started watching and kept waiting for the Lovers Rock party/blues to actually start.
    Then I started waiting for them to stop bloody singing Silly Games.
    Then I started wondering if Steve McQueen had ever actually been to a blues party (the answer turned out to be definitively "No!"
    Which made me stop wondering why the rape scene, and the mosh pit dancing, and the lights being on, and it being so empty before 6am.
    All he had to do was have the main character's Mum turned up, turn the lights on, and drag her home, and I could have given it 6/10. The only saving grace was playing The Investigators...twice!
    But Steve, no music credits during or after. How was this an ode to Lovers Rock? Odious perhaps.

    Went south after silly games. It wasn't my era but I got a lot of insight from my Elders and this wasn't what went on. Hardly any storyline then whatever events occurred were completely unheard of in a real blues. Hopefully another filmmaker can depict what really went on.

    I see comments below like "brilliant, terrific, and remarkable." But to be honest, all I can say about those people is they must be really easy to amuse, because it was THE most boring film I could imagine. People singing, cooking, and dancing...and absolutely nothing else...with nothing even resembling direction. Hell, I could've directed this thing. It made me wonder if this McQueen dude ever even heard of terms like "plot" or "story line," because if he did, he didn't get the memo. On a scale of 10 I'd give it a .5 only because of the effort of all those people that got together to not tell a story.
    On the other hand, the first episode, Mangrove, was really good, although I love courtroom dramas, but this one? A total waste of an hour (that is if you can suffer thru the entire thing).

    This was the worst film I’ve ever seen. This was nothing like what I remember growing up it had potential then I’m not sure what happened in this film. I’ve been to loads of blues dance and house parties never saw anything like this. Completely false. The guy who made this film has clearly never been to a blues dance in his whole life. If any of that happened the whole dance would have lock off instantly our parties were nice nothing like what was displayed we had nice vibes. This was soo false. The guy should make films about things he knows about. This one guy ruined an Entire genre in one night !!
