The fact that they left the player character voiceless so that the DnD nerds can voice them themselves is either a stroke a genius or a happy coincidence.
What further reinforces the abusive parent comparison is that Cazador's "father" (the vampire that turned him) was just as abusive towards him... and if Astarion ascends it's hinted he will become just as evil himself. Just like victims of parental abuse often become abusive towards their own children

I love how after he tries to be a cold asshole and say that handing over the children meant nothing he... Hears himself say that and goes "....Huh." Astarion is probably the best "toe the line between irredeemable monster and salvageable person" I've seen in a while.
And also earlier in the game he says he doesn't remember the people he brings to Cazador. But then he sees Sebastian and immediately remembers him and feels terrible about what happened. Small things like this show that Astarion has empathy more than is usually apparent with him.
During my Durge playthrough, I told Astarion not to lose his head. And Cazador immediately made Astarion lose his head by mentioning his temper. And I adore it. The Dark Urge and Astarion have a lot of similarities and often see their worst selves in each other. After Astarion tried burning his brother in the sun, my Durge straight up told him that he scares her more than the elder brain. So Cazador pried on Astarion's deepest insecurities: that he was a monster beyond his own control and incapable of being loved. He tried to isolate Astarion once again, but he came back with a real family at his side. When the battle started, first thing I had my Durge do was free Astarion and she had the incredible voiceline of "nothing else hurts you on my watch." I fucking love our group of weirdos and how inseparable they become by the end of the game.
I know he technically goes to punch him with any option but gotta love that this version has him going to smack him after Cazador insults us. I love that it's pretty much universally agreed that we should be able to comfort him after killing Cazador, hopefully in a patch!
karlach & gale watching astarion go through this and just going DAMN. THAT'S KIND OF FUCKED UP on the inside but not saying a single thing until gale chimes in right at the end is really... they're just standing there behind you and nodding every time you say something, huh. love that for them

This is truly one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen .... Regardless of it being a videogame. And why I don't believe I'll ever play an Ascended Astarion run... Because for me this is about being better than the people that broke you down and made you feel less than. It is redemption.
Unfortunately vampire spawn cannot disobey direct commands from their masters, so he didn't really have too much of a choice regardless of how he felt about it. Just makes it that much more horrible tho 😢

I got real lucky. Astarion didn’t get pulled into the ceremony, and I had one of the crew kill one of the sacrifices. My main didn’t have any persuasion checks, and Astarion didn’t even react to having the ritual option taken away from him. 😉
You actually get them to move to the UnderDark to live, so out of harms way of the city and in the end you get to choose to move there with Astarion to help lead them to a better life

Considering it’s confirmed vampires can feed on animals, literally get them a herd of deep rothe. They don’t even need to kill the animals to feed. Animal handlers vampires village.

The ritual does not make him a full vampire, it would make him ascended - beyond a normal vampire. I’m guessing since his master was killed he’s no longer a spawn, and not a true, independent vampire. Idk

In the game, the only way for him to become other than a spawn is to go the mega vampire route of the ritual, which basically destroys any kindness he had in him. I had been saying I would have loved if he could have just stolen some of Cazador's blood and been able to just become a normal vampire. Purely selfish on my part since I would have loved to become a vampire myself, but that ritual route is a little too evil for me. :( And yeh, if he doesn't go through with the ritual, he's just a spawn forever. Killing the master just breaks control over the spawn, it doesn't change the fact that they are a spawn.

Honestly I can't hold Astarion responsible for the fate of the spawns... he clearly didn't know Cazador would turn the people he and the other thralls brought in into spawns for an unholy ritual. And vampire spawns literally can't disobey a direct order by their master, it's mind control. And from the countless scenes we can unlock about Astarion's past, Cazador punished him for the slightest attempt at disobedience as well, torturing and humiliating him to break his spirit. Like inviting Astarion to attent the dinner with their latest "guest" (victim), and if Astarion said yes Cazador would serve him a putrid rat he had to eat, but if he said no Cazador would have him flayed. With his worst memory being "the year of hell", where Cazador had Astarion buried alive as punishment _for a full year_ in total sensory isolation, unable to move or scream, ravaged by hunger. After that, Astarion said, he never disobeyed again and tried not to feel anything. he just went through the motions. [A memory I'd never have know about if it weren't for YT, a the player has to be cruel to Astarion to even get to it: First try to force Astarion to use the astral tadpole on himself despite his very destinite protestation that he does _not_ want it and the transformation that comes with it. Then mindmeld with him in the tadpole link and dig through his mind to find his worst memory to use against him to frighten him with. Then tell him he should accept the astral tadpole because he needs to become stronger otherwise Cazador would be able to do things like that to him again. It's truly a horrible move.] Not to mention Astarion really _hates_ the Gur, as they're directly responsible for him being a vampire. It was a group of Gur who assaulted him in the streets of Baldur's Gate and beat and stabbed him to death, with Cazador coming to the rescue and scaring them off, then offering Astarion the choice between bleeding to death in an alley or accepting eternal life, and Astarion accepted to get revenge. But I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Cazador paid those Gur to assault Astarion in the first place.
why is it in that moment that cazador is seemingly victorious over Astarion, I really wish we could have just bashed Cazador across the back of the head since he is distracted??? like I think it would have worked.
I'm always saddened by how everyone Astarion charmed or captured blames him...yes, he absolutely is at fault...but he's also a victim as well...he didn't CHOOSE to do these things...he was tortured and used as a slave for 200 years...I don't think it would make sense for him to NOT be blamed, but I also wish that even one of his victims could actually see how he was nothing more than a tool and maybe, MAYBE not tell him it was his fault, you know?

Astarion deserves sympathy. But to ask it of the people he complicity damned is disproportionate. He deserves their hate. That’s his burden to bear. Monsters can be victims. And victims can still be monsters. It feels like people only want to see him one way to the total exclusion of the other.

I chose to help Astarion complete the Ritual. I know that's the "evil" option, but think about it. Releasing 7000 blood starved Vampires into the world is not a good thing. They are victims and didn't deserve what happened to them, but they are also monsters on the verge of ferality. Also the Underdark is hardly what I would call a bountiful feeding ground. Most likely they'll turn to cannibalism or starve to death. Think of the bigger picture. As Vampire Ascendant, Astarion is a truly free Vampire. Once that tadpole is finally removed, Astarion can go out in broad daylight without fear of combusting into flames. He can cross running water. He can enjoy garlic in his meals. And best of all he never has to feed on blood ever again. Not to mention he becomes so much stronger, meaning more power to fight the Absolute. I'm not saying it was the right thing, but would you rather have an uber Vampire on your side, or let 7000 feral Vampires run wild?
While I agree releasing the spawn is a bad move, Astarion doesn't need to ascend for that. You can leave the spawn to the cells or kill them if Astarion doesn't ascend. Astarion becoming ascended vampire is the worst move by far. He becomes an incredibly evil being of nearly limitless power. He outright says he will seek to dominate the world. Sure, he will remain on your side as long as the threat of ceremorphosis exists but after that's taken care of there's no holding him. You're trading one evil threat for another. And let's not discuss what happens if you romance him and he ascends...

What part about him NOT having control of himself and not knowing about his victims did you not understand? He had to obey his master. And he had no choice.
Did you not see the scene where his siblings try to kidnap him? They can’t control their bodies. If they disobey an order, something takes over. It’s like demonic possession or mind control or something. They don’t have a will of their own. And it’s not like Astarion didn’t try to fight it. He tried to help someone once and Cazador punished him for it. He’s not a monster, just scared that if he tries to save anyone else , he’d get punished again.

Voiceless RPG characters aren't anything new. Fallout (excluding 4), Baldur's Gate 1 + 2, Dragon Age Origins, Divinity Original Sin games,... it's a tried and true formula.

So Astarion seduced the T-800 only to abandon him in some filthy dungeon for a whole damn 170 of years. He is truly a monster.
What part about him NOT having control of himself and not knowing about his victims did you not understand? He had to obey his master. And he had no choice.
Did you not see the scene where his siblings try to kidnap him? They can’t control their bodies. If they disobey an order, something takes over. It’s like demonic possession or mind control or something. They don’t have a will of their own. And it’s not like Astarion didn’t try to fight it. He tried to help someone once and Cazador punished him for it. He’s not a monster, just scared that if he tries to save anyone else , he’d get punished again.
I wonder if the T-800 would look better with blue eyes instead of red ones.🤔
