Sure but when I want to listen to Holdsworth I will listen to Holdsworth. It’s a different style. The thing about bands like GD and Phish aren’t listening to their studio albums. The live performances are what you listen to. The songs aren’t set in stone and are open to be reinterpreted, explored, and evolve from show to show. We can take a tune like Stairway to Heaven which can be argued as the greatest solo ever. When you hear it live you want to hear it sound close to the studio album as possible. It would be weird if Page did it any other way. However, I enjoy the extended solo he went into on The Song Remains the Same. That’s the joy in GD or Phish. The spontaneity and communication between band members musically on stage. Rather than songs being known by their albums they take on life being known through shows. I would disagree with them saying they weren’t good at music. Lyrically sure not so good, but musically they are/were talented musicians. Listen to Bathtub Gin from The Great Went show. That or Harry Hood from Coral Sky in 96. Two of their best jams and performances of all time for Phish. Then listen to how they sound live today. Over the years the songs will have shows where the song doesn’t sound great, it’s good, or those few times where everything is just perfect as they work their way through the song. It isn’t for everyone and that’s fair. Some people want to hear a song sound like it does on the album live which is fine. I too would hate to hear Comfortably Numb go in a completely different direction than what I expect but there is something about music that is able to have a somewhat blank canvas each night.

Thanks for the video guys. I sort of enjoyed it. Why didn’t you look up anything about the band before making the video though? Not even how many people are in the band? And why would you tell a top improv guitar player to not make it up as he goes?
This video was originally shown as an intermission for a live concert broadcast (I saw it myself). These armchair warriors seem to think that explaining how pedals work to a potentially non-musician audience is the dumbest thing they ever saw... Talk about missing the point.
Mike is the bassist. Fish is Jon Fishman the drummer. If you guys are going to review and criticize the man and his band, at least get the terms and the people right! Geesh.
Lads, don't normally comment on you tube, but really, neither of these guys have the slightest clue about anything. You don't get jam bands ? Music is a language, its about conversation. Some people are able to communicate musically as if there are speaking to each other, other cant. As I'm writing this comment, you are saying nothing positive. So what's the point. There has never been a statue of a critic erected.
He is classically trained and knows nine picking styles. Jerry, considered by many as great knew eight. BB, was a huge influence for both. Write and compose your own 14 track record at 22, if you haven’t already, and I will agree with 5% of your opinions. Mike Gordon, has the same tech. for his bass and Page McConnell, has 14 keyboards. Listen to a few shows and Trey can play three songs in a row in D (1998 Show Contest).
I am “classically trained” and wrote/recorded my first album at 24 but all the stuff you listed doesn’t really mean anything so I’m not sure what your point is. And I didn’t go to a school where you get to make up your own major and record a prog album for your senior project I actually had to play classical music to graduate.
Trey has written a ton of music that is thoroughly composed. It wasn't until the mid 2000's that they decided to simplify things and become a "jam band". Id recommend listening to an album like "Rift" or anything from the late 80's to early 90's to hear how truly great musicians they all are. My opinion of course.
I love Phish, and I also thought this video was super funny. It would help though if you guys knew the topic a bit better. For example, you joked about Trey tripping too hard to learn about new gear…. Trey’s been in addiction recovery for over 15 years. So… you looked a-holes right there, even if you’re trying to be clowns.
Y’all said you’d do a new video over his new rig once this video hit 10k. Treys changed his rig multiple times now since 2021 and this video has 17k views. Where’s the new video?
I still want to but Ira lives in another state now. Might be doable with the podcasting software I just got though. I’ve been busy doing stuff people actually like - 1st Flattened Earth song has 21k and only makes chuds mad vs this video 90% hate clicks. So I’ll get to it but it’s not a top priority. Might not even get me views - follow ups can be hit or miss.
bro stop hating on trey. he is one of the best guitar players alive today, his rig is awsome... just stop you know you have been doing something wrong when you have 1k dislikes and 34 likes lmfao
This video is hilarious and must be a troll. No way these two could claim to be a guitarist and have this much lack of understanding about a rig, guitar, and music in general. If it's not a troll, then you guys need to get out of grandma's basement, go back to school and learn something. Meanwhile, Phish will make millions, sell out stadiums, and create original music.
Berate the guitarist so we alienate an entire demographic that otherwise might actually be interested in subscribing to and watching our channel. Great marketing strategy. Perhaps you should also change the name from 'rig rundown reaction show' to '2 angry guys who don't get laid so we drink too much and take our anger out on other guitarist who are wildly more successful and accomplished than us show' too. Can't figure out why there are only 157 people who would want to watch this. Best line of the show - "It looks like his shirt is from the 1970s"....says the guy wearing a Star Wars shirt.
Almost no musician or actor or artist can “make it” under capitalism despite doing good work and having - often - superior talent. What world are you living in?
I’m not going to bash you’re thinking and hating. I do want to ask you though...David Gilmour’s rig is about 4 times the size of Trey’s, who’s rig was actually quite minimal at the point in time. What are your thoughts on David Gilmour? He’s one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived and I’d have to say Trey is as well. Granted some Phish shit is way too goofy and stupid but most of it is 4 insane musicians killing their instruments and changing up their songs (improv) after getting through the main sections, so the audience doesn’t hear the same crap as if they just put on a CD. That’s what he meant by making it up.
Me personally I actually love David gilmour and I actually love Trey anastasio which is what every single person on this thread fails to understand but I will tell you my friend because you seem to have an open mind that I was trying to make this a cross between mystery science theater 3000 and I came up with you make fun of the friends that you love the most if you can feel me you can feel my brother...😎

This video was originally shown as an intermission for a live concert broadcast (I saw it myself). These armchair warriors seem to think that explaining how pedals work to a potentially non-musician audience is the dumbest thing they ever saw... Talk about missing the point.
These guys have definitely not read the book.
A book about Phish? Of course not why would I do that.
Yikes. These two muppets think pretty highly of themselves. P
There’s a reason why you only have 377 subscribers.
Jesus.
Check out the most recent (2021) rig rundown. I'm indeed a Phish fan, but loved you guys reaction lol
I appreciate it. I’ve been meaning to do a follow up hopefully will get to it soon
I love Trey's playing-tone - but damn this is a funny video
Mike is the bassist.
Fish is Jon Fishman the drummer.
If you guys are going to review and criticize the man and his band, at least get the terms and the people right! Geesh.
No, I haven’t cared since 2018.
@@theonetruematt as you make a comment 6 years later.
Do you know how internet work? It’s my RUclips channel. You comment I see it. Anyway thanks for supporting the channel.
It's like watching a couple min wage guitar center virgin metal heads try to conceive happiness. It just makes them frustrated.
@@theonetruematt My thesis is bigger than yours😝
You two must be huge candlebox fans.
You nailed it! Thank you!
Only channel on youtube where 'guitar players' would shit on a real - stereo mic'd - Leslie cab. Subscribed.
these guys must be fun at parties.
Imagine being this miserable and petty
You left a comment on my RUclips video lol
Y’all said you’d do a new video over his new rig once this video hit 10k.
Treys changed his rig multiple times now since 2021 and this video has 17k views.
Where’s the new video?
I still want to but Ira lives in another state now. Might be doable with the podcasting software I just got though.
I’ve been busy doing stuff people actually like - 1st Flattened Earth song has 21k and only makes chuds mad vs this video 90% hate clicks. So I’ll get to it but it’s not a top priority. Might not even get me views - follow ups can be hit or miss.
Thanks for the full-blownsies, guys.
Wow, you taught Trey so much!I bet I got rid of that leslie and those speakers! I bet he's so thankful
Hahah yea in what world can you act like it’s not awesome to play thru a Leslie???
Kids! Dont listen to Trey's advice. Listen to these guys. They seem like they are doing well for themselves.
This makes me wonder why I like phish , and jam bands, so much.
HAHAHAHAH...you guys are absolute jokes. SAD!
bro stop hating on trey. he is one of the best guitar players alive today, his rig is awsome... just stop you know you have been doing something wrong when you have 1k dislikes and 34 likes lmfao
Who is this?
Keep working on your sweep picking brah.... you'll get it one day
Gotta love two dudes who couldn't make it, picking apart one of the most prolific musicians of all time. L O L
Almost no musician or actor or artist can “make it” under capitalism despite doing good work and having - often - superior talent. What world are you living in?
brace yourselves boys
It’s an ocelot because they have a song named that.
These guys just completely don’t get it lol
The hate is strong with you guys...
"I've never listened to a phish album" ...at least you have an informed opinion...
Two hobbits being tools in a basement together. I'm sure trey was devastated by your opinions
Their heads must explode at the thought of Geddy Lee who just plugged directly into the PA and didn't use stacks at all. HOW DOES HE DO IT?!?
Me personally I actually love David gilmour and I actually love Trey anastasio which is what every single person on this thread fails to understand but I will tell you my friend because you seem to have an open mind that I was trying to make this a cross between mystery science theater 3000 and I came up with you make fun of the friends that you love the most if you can feel me you can feel my brother...😎
Another thing, maybe consider mixing in some push ups
