Dmitri Shostakovich, Cello sonata Op. 40 (1934), 3rd movement | Nadège Rochat, cello

This is the 3rd of 4 publications (movements) of the Cello Sonata by Dmitri Shostakovich. This recording was made in 2016 in the Piano Salon Christophori, Berlin, previous to a concert. As we recorded the music only once, and the image many times (one cameraman and different angles), there are synchronisation issues in this video, but I thought that it was still worth sharing. I hope that you will enjoy the performance nevertheless!

3. Largo
To me, this movement is a mixture of supplication and story telling. A story from the past which caused sadness and despair, and a supplication in the present (the movement opens and closes on the same sort of phrase, ascending and ending with a plaintive, downwards going motive).
