Sadly this is still believed where I came from. No women is allowed to accompany during burial and crying is toned down as the dead can supposedly hear. I remember my mom suppressing her emotion while why grandma died. It was something I could not fathom at that time..that is, how can expression of one's longing be prohibited. May Allah guide us all to the right path and may it be easy for us to accept such guidance. Ramadhan Mubarak!

Grief at the death of a loved one and weeping for the dead is normal and acceptable. Although Muslims are permitted to cry at funerals, when it's accompanied by wailing and lamenting, it becomes haram (forbidden) and attracts punishment. Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wept for the son of one of his daughters. Sa’d ibn ‘Ubaadah said: “What is this, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “This is compassion which Allah puts in the hearts of His slaves. Allah shows mercy to those of His slaves who are merciful.”

He thought that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had forgotten that, so he reminded him. A person can shed tears, but wailing is what is not allowed. When the Prophet ( saw) 's son Ibrahim died,he shed tears and the companions said ," even you?" Then it is reported he said," the eyes shed tears ,the heart is grieved , but the tongue only says what pleases Allah."
As a non-muslim, do we follow this also? I have a cousin who was recently murdered and he's Muslim. Im looking at some videos online to get a better idea of customs, so I don't offend. I'm distraught and i would like to leave flowers and/or visit his grave. I'm not sure what to do. 😭
