Another fantastic episode, Graham. I love that the cover led you down the rabbit hole of the story of Sinbad. It is the magic of this hobby. It starts from one point and can diverge off on many paths if we just take time to explore what is in front of us. It is a wonderful education.
It really is wonderful! Learning about Sinbad was my favorite thing about making this episode. I plan on visiting his memorial which is by a lighthouse in New Jersey where he used to sit and watch the ocean during his last years. The tangent stories give endless joy to the hobby. 😊
Wow Graham, everytime I'm surprised how many information and stories you can get about the stamps. Thx for sharing and the quality of your videos. A karaoke polar bear 😂😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it. 😊 I am always surprised with the types of stories and lessons that I come across with these episodes, always fascinating. Thanks so much for watching!
Great episode! I have 13 stamps from Greenland. I had the idea when I was kid in 1988 to send a mail to a fake address in Greenland, just to get a postmark from there. And it worked !
I followed a whim based on a stamp and got (1) a letter from the "Pitcairn High Commissioner," located in New Zealand. Then, following that information, got a letter from Pitcairn Island.
Great video, congratulations!!!, I have just started a Greenland collection, the stamps are beautiful, interesting, not so expensive and the new year sets not so large. It is possible to have a complete collection of Greenland,
Another fantastic episode, Graham! I hardly have any stamps from Greenland ... so I learned a lot! Love the polar bear stamps especially the mommy with babies 😊. Amazing history with the cover as well. Thanks for sharing!
🤣🤣🤣 The karaoke polar bear was brilliant! If he tries to jump the song queue, I’ll let him. I’ve only really become aware of Greenland stamps in the last few years, so thank you, Graham, for this entertaining history!
Lol 😂 thanks Punk! I would also step aside if the Polar Bear wants to flex their golden pipes.. clearly they can carry a note!! 🎵 thanks for watching!!
Excellent, excellent video, Graham! Thank you! One of your best "stories", I think. I listened with all ears. All the information was new to me and so interesting. I loved the history of Sinbad and immediately fell in love with the soldier. :) :) :) :) I haven't seen a Greenland stamp in life, yet, but they are absolutely beautiful stamps and really portray the country and its culture and history. Thanks again for a wonderful episode! I am looking forward to the next episode!
You are the best, Charnie 😊 so glad to see that you enjoyed the episode and also developed a love for Sinbad the sailor pup! He seems to have been the star of the episode 🐶
I assumed polar bears would sing 'The Bear Necessities'' at their local karaoke bar but looking at the stamp I think Laura is correct. They have possibly had too many drinks (on ice of course) and their inner Whitney has completely taken over. It happens to the best of us :) Fantastic video as always 👍
Great episode that summarized Greenland Philately very nicely. I collect topical stamps for dogsledding, polar exploration, and canoes. I started noticing lots of Greenland stamps - this led me to discover the engraver Czeslaw Slania - what beautiful stamps he made for Greenland! So I decided to focus/collect Greenland. I have quite a few now, and this episode made more excited to continue my collection. Thanks!
Great Episode on Greenland stamps!! It seems like greenlands philatelic orders are handled by nordfrim which also caters to philatelic requests for Denmark post. The websites are identical and the process of sending cancelled stamps is same.
Polar bears are a great subject for Greenland stamps. Another great commemorative stamp subject for Greenland would be the ice cording projects including the well noted Greenland Ice Core Project that ran from 1989 to 1995. This ice cord project along with other Greenlandic ice cord efforts, have yielded data about the earth going back as much as 123,000 years. This is a great achievement in humans' pursuit of science knowleadge. Greenland can be proud of this and boast about it on a stamp series.
🙌 a connection to the cover! I get excited when a viewer knows or comes from a cover’s town… now we need a viewer from Ivigtut to compete it 🇬🇱😆 Thanks so much for watching!
Greenland is for me an undeveloped stamp country. I have some of them, but nothing of importance except the Thule set. One cancelled and the other mint which was in a collection with Russian stamps. I know the Pakket Post stamps are rare and seldom as you said in your video. I can remember that I had some, but in a more poor condition and I do not know where they are to be honest. I never saw a letter from Greenland which was used for postage. I liked your letter from 1940 a lot, this is interesting history. And I assume very difficult to find. With 60.000 people there are for sure not many existing letters from Greenland overall. This is a very exotic country and I can understand, that some people like to collect these stamps. Or people with a faible for polar bears. Whitney Houston as polar bear is great 😄
Thank you, Oliver 😊. The letter was an interesting find, I actually stumbled on it after days of searching for Greenland covers… I didn’t realize how cool it was until I began to properly research it.
Light on Greenland stamps...I have 13 and 2 Thule, one of which I expanded upon on my Philatelic Hystoria in one of My Mountain Stamps tweets…very interesting history indeed. I did order a few from Nordfrim out of Denmark (and they, too give a packet of a few stamps because they can't put them on international shipping), but need to build this meager collection. Thanks for another great video to learn new things from!
Yeah and someone else here in the comments mentioned that Nordfrim may actually be the manager of the postal’s service’s philatelic shipments and supplies… so that would make sense seeing that you had a similar experience ordering from Nordfrim. 🤔
Very informative episode. I had never noticed the language changes on the stamps showing Margrethe II, so now I have to go look in my album! Thanks Graham.
Thanks Les, it was only by chance that I was looking at the names of two stamps and wondered why they looked different… that lead to a rabbit hole about the language and so much more. Philately continues to impress me. 😊
Love it. I love Scandinavian stamps in general and Greenland is an excellent example of combining history, geography, and art in the philatelic world. I collect Faroe Islands stamps for the same reason. Excellent to have another fascinating “Graham episode”!
Id love to explore Faroe Islands in the future as well. Like you said, its a great mix of history, geography, art and culture. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the episode :)
Great story about Greenland philately! I also just have a few stamps from Greenland before their post was moved to Denmark. One thing I noticed, like you, since they allow anyone to vote each year on the most beautiful stamp is just how beautiful and artistic all their stamps appear. Their stamps especially excel with the artistry of all things in the natural world. As you can tell I really love their stamps because of their artistic designs.
I agree! The artistic effort that they put into their stamps really does stand out, it can make for an attractive collection 🇬🇱. Thanks Gary, glad you enjoyed it!! 😊
I have explored that, however Ted from Ted Talks Stamps has done a great video on him already, check it out if you haven’t already seen it. Thanks so much for watching, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
14:41 Absolutely fascinating how stamps can be a historic record of so many things in the world that can be learned about just by digging a little below the beauty or valuation of a stamp. 👏 👏 👏
My thoughts exactly! And I learned this from a simple googling of the name once I saw there were two different spellings. Stamps pointed this out to me, I would otherwise never have looked into it!

Is there any other territory that was settled (colonized, invaded, occupied, conquered, or likewise) by Europeans (or any other group) that took on the language of the indigenous population as the official language? This should be commemorated on a stamp.
GREAT question, the story of the language is incredible. If there is another example of this, I’d love to know.
South Africa has nine indigenous languages as official languages in addition to English and Afrikaans as do many other countries. Not to mention all of the former Soviet republics that were occupied by ethnic Russians and the former Yugoslavian countries that were occupied by Serbians.
Seriously?? Just another interesting and informative episode??? C'mon! 🤣
