It's not about the support for that, it is to protect Eliwood. Try imagine what would happen 2 turns later (especially with Linus) if Pent attacked behind the wall.

A change in his ending position. 2) If Pent doesn't kill Linus on retaliation (at least a critical), he has to choose between Lloyd or Linus to attack on the following turn. 3) If Linus survives, one unit will have no way of hiding due to the lack of space available. 4) Eliwood will most likely to be targeted because he is not trained. Definitely a gameover if he was attacked.
