  • *The Fabulous Succulent Garden at Australia's Oldest Botanic Gardens
Before becoming The Royal Botanic Gardens this was the site of the first farm for the early colony following the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. Suffering from both drought and very poor soil quality, the first attempts at agriculture were far from successful. Once the agricultural ventures were relocated to other locations the site was repurposed eventually finding its place as a garden.
The succulent garden is a thing of beauty. More sculptural than floral, thorny cacti are interspersed with Yuccas, Aloes, Euphorbias and succulents of all colours, shapes and sizes. The beds are organised by geographic zone so in one area will be mainly specimens from the African continent, while in another will be found those from the Americas.
Trivia question: which former member of stripped down all male dance troupe Manpower is now a landscape designer and contributed to this part of the garden?
During this visit we will see many of the specimens coming into flower. This is a recording of a livestream tour delivered in February 2022.
