Pulling it on like that prevents the horse from going faster and having a relaxed motion. So if you bounce up and down on the saddle while trotting it’s easier, and also more comfortable. Also always wear a helmet for protection. When your cantering make sure to have a good grip on the reigns but not tight just tight enough to control and turn. If you follow these steps trust me your riding will improve, and the horse will be more comfortable. And it won’t be “bumpy” as you said.
