    Bought my first Acer Chromebook 13 about 4 years ago for appx. $250. Just got a replacement (same model, CB5-311) for $180.
    Always 10+ hours of battery life, I keep open a dozen tabs or more no problem and love the interconnectivity and freedom of having my settings on any other device running Chrome. Not bad for $500 over 5 years.

    99% of the time I needed a laptop just for fun stuff like social media, reading, RUclips and Netflix, and I always had a PC or a Laptop, but because it was such a waste of time to get windows updated every day for more than an hour I decided to get a chromebook I saw at a poundshop for like 40 dlls, worst case scenario I was just wasting 40 bucks, but after 3 years it still works great and I don't have to worry about the battery life or the annoying daily updates.
    Once this chromebook dies on me I will be getting a new one.

    RUclips used to have an online video editing tools for simple video editing, cut video, add simple basic text, add audio, all these basic tasks works pretty well for basic editing, nothing fancy, but RUclips decided to completely discontinued and remove that video editor.
    I have no idea what they were thinking, not everyone need advance video editing, a simple and basic online video editor works great for Chromebook users, those who want to produce a professional video will use Windows or Mac.
    this video i am watching right now, doesn't even use any special effect or professional video editing, a basic & simple video editor to cut or trim the video will do, you get my point here, not everyone need to edit their youtube video just like this video

    I work in IT - administering large networks and working with cloud technologies. I need to script (python), manage containers, and interact with my teams across all projects. I also need to be able to have remote access through a VPN to my servers and other systems for monitoring and management, and have the ability to update my ticket system and interact with technicians for the purposes of escalation and management etc. I am also a student -- studying an arts degree with a university here in the UK. That means my laptop must be able to get me through my assignments and dissertation projects, tutorials (through Blackboard) and interaction with my fellow students using voice and video. And I do this on a used Google Pixelbook. All of it.

    Chromebook also has a shelf life of 6 years after introduction of each model. Not from date of purchase. After which Google will no longer support it. You can actually buy a new Chromebook that is close to being obsolete already.

    • @joelian9749
      @joelian9749 Год назад

      You can still use the Chromebook after Google no longer supports it, just like tablets and cellphones. But it is safer to have the latest Chrome OS. Some apps might not run if the Chrome OS is not the latest version. Usually, you can tell if the Chromebook on sale is outdated based on the spec sheets. On Amazon, you can actually find out how long that product has been on sale. Avoid those been selling for a few years because of the OS support issue.

    Why couldn't a Chromebook be used as a front-end access/control to a Windows Based computer? One could connect (via USB-C connection) a very fast, high-performance windows computer that would act as a Windows software co-processor to a Chromebook thus achieving access and performance features of a Windows or Mac Computer. The Chromebook would only need to be a controller of the Windows computer attached to a large 4K Display for output. I think this will work with the right software. I also believe that Google, Apple, and Microsoft are working on Cloud-Based graphics and video compute processing that could be utilized by every Chromebook leaving high-end processing (Graphics, Video, Database, and AI...) in the Cloud.

    Best bit about Chromebooks is the security. Every job is in a separate sandbox unlike PCs. Best tip I had was to close down every time. Don't just close the lid as you would on Windows PC cos it takes so long to close and open. Chromebooks close and open in a few seconds and every time you open it checks for bugs and upgrades in the background.
    Last thing is the ease of use having a keyboard, pad and touchscreen on the same machine.
    You never knew you wanted it till you tried it

    Long story short :
    1°) watch videos : use Plex and sync films you want to watch offline.
    2°) Crostini is your friend if Android or Web Apps don't suit you :)
    3°) the main idea you have to keep in mind should be "what task I want to achieve" and not "what tool I'm used to use". It's the same idea if you use a Windows PC, a Gnu/Linux PC, a Chromebook, a Mac. Tools will differe but usages will be the same.
    4°) If you use a specific software which is available only on one of those platforms and can't be replaced (work specific software only available on a certain platform), definitely you should keep that platform.

      Also it depends where you live and how good the internet architecture is, if you basically never use cloud based services for your work, a chromebook might be quite unusual.
      Also, it is not a good primary PC for people who want gaming devices.

    1. ChromeOS is lightweight OS, so similar performance requires less power. Hence SILENT machine with long battery life is mostly sufficient. Chromebooks are not I think much diffferent physically from PCs.
    2. So many apps are web based, and Chromebook is made for those. There is a web version of Autocad, for example.
    3. Runs Android apps, so you can use same apps on Chromebook as on Android phones/tablets. Great for mapping/navigation.
    4. You can have very high powered Chromebooks, but then perhaps a Windows machine is more flexible.
    5. They are (mostly) ruggedised for education environment. That's a good thing.
    I bought a Chromebook 3 years ago. it largely replaced my windows machine, it is just easier for most things. Now I have access to a Windows machine I can use when needed. Mostly life is just simpler with the Chromebook and my android devices. I upgraded to a newer Chromebook recently, more memory, 3: 2 touch screen, but those were not pressing needs.

    Hey! Thanks for making this video. What do you think about the potential of Chromebook + Cloud Computing? By cloud computing, I mean the virtual CPUs, GPUs, and other services offered by Google, AWS ect. What I mean by this question is that Chromebook, with low specs, can rely on fast internet connection and cloud computing to complete heavy-duty computing works, such as video editing, game streaming. So that people don't have to invest on most advanced hardware specs on their PCs, which would be outdated in 2 or 3 years. Does it make sense? How feasible of this looks to you? Thanks!

    Chromebooks are awesome. The Samsung chromebook Fiesta Red. The acer spin 714. The HP dragonfly pro. If you know how to use an android phone, then there is no learning curve like there is with windows. Chromebooks aren't meant to be used as your workhorse. They are meant for simple documentation, social media, note taking, etc.

    Wow, I'm shocked to see people still stuck in the dark, dark ages. Playstore apps turns most of your knocks against chromebooks straight on their head. And, I mean, are we also going to completely ignore what crouton can do?

    • @KawshikAhmed
      @KawshikAhmed 6 лет назад

      We don't even need Cruton anymore, Chrome OS can directly install Linux apps not from version 69 thanks to Google Crostini Project.

    • @professionallylay703
      @professionallylay703 6 лет назад

      Wrong. You're just plain, dead wrong. And it's that kind of thinking that will ruin the true linux experience. Linux runing natively is really cool, and useful, sure, but it's a long way from running the way that crouton does.
      Without going into the finer details, it's a debian container, and a lot is missing, and a lot simply will not run natively...not yet anyway.

    • @itGenius_
      @itGenius_  5 лет назад +1

      We're getting very close to a unified experience where you'll have better experiences with local apps running (both Android and Linux) but it's still got a way to go to be stable and user friendly for the layperson.

  • @professionallylay703

    I edit simple 720p videos with ease, play borderlands 2, office work, etc etc. all on the same chromebook. It's a bloody pentium with 4 gigs of ram. But it's a skylake based pentium, and ddr4, so it fights like a champ. That's the point of linux, utilizing hardware in a way that the bloated windows and Mac Os can't.

      Either of those chromebooks are potentially what you would want. I personally use the x360, for the sake of 8gb ram as opposed to 4.
      There are some really useful web-based tools to do light editing, wevideo sounds like it could be useful for you. Soundtrap is good for slapping audio together(web-based),
      But once you install linux via crouton, you'll also have access to programs like flowblade, audacity, obs, kdenlive, and other video/audio editing software.

    • @MrBackin5ive
      @MrBackin5ive 5 лет назад

      @Jonathan Bickel by all means get the pretty one, and the 8gb of ram will help ya out. That said, if it comes with something like an m3, then there's still a lot we can do in linux, but the i3 might be better.

You'd be able to install native desktop apps like obs, gimp etc with ease that actually work quite decent by the way. Unlike using something like crossover... (If you have the technical expertise that is) But I mean don't expect a high end laptop for a low budget device when wanting to do strong workloads.... I think you're kind of missing the point there.

      Also... If you really wanted to, you can flash specific firmware in order to reinstall the chromebook with any operating system except for hackintoshing. Since that requires specific hardware. So you could still install something like linux, bsd or windows on the chromebook. Could be a fun project, but you might brick your device in the process... So only do it as last resort option.
