  • In this short video, the iconic multimedia artist Laurie Anderson speaks her mind about our changeable world today, and why we should stop panicking and being so territorial: “You cannot close your doors anymore, everyone’s banging on them and you’d better figure out what to do - and see the positive thing in that.”
    One billion people are homeless, constantly moving around, Anderson says: “And these enormous shifts are very, very unsettling to people.” It’s equally overwhelming for those arriving and those already there, and we need to look at it, she finds, because it’s the way things are going. To Anderson, this blending of people is very exciting, and she compares it to the “real brew” of a New York port, but on a global scale. However, she believes that we are all in a “media panic mode,” constantly expecting something bad to happen, and advises that we “try to see these great surges and great changes in a mode that’s not panic.” What’s happening is inevitable, and we must try to see the good in it because fighting it and being angry won’t help: “Go with the flow, find a really good way to ride that.”
    Laurie Anderson (b. 1947) is a legendary award-winning multimedia artist based in New York. Initially trained as a sculptor, she has worked with painting, music, multimedia shows, drawings, operas, electronic software, theatre, films and installations throughout her career. Anderson became widely known outside the art world with her single ‘O Superman’, which reached number two on the UK pop charts in 1981. She is considered a pioneer of electronic music and is praised for her unique spoken word albums and multimedia art pieces. Among her most recent work is the film ‘Heart of a Dog’ (2015). In 2017 under the name of ‘La Camera Insabbiata’, ‘Chalkroom’ won for ‘Best VR Experience’ at the Venice Film Festival. Anderson's visual work has been presented in major museums throughout the United States and Europe. From May 2017 Laurie Anderson’s ’Chalkroom’ is on view at the MASS MoCA, Massachusetts, USA. I spent half a day with Laurie at Mason Gross School of the Arts in 1980 when one of my professors Geoffrey Hendricks brought her out to visit. This was before her first record "Oh Superman." Her insight and joyful creativity remains a beacon of optimism. Bowing deeply here.

    This is wonderful advice. Non-political and refreshing. I wish more artists would think for themselves and not worry so much about saying how they really feel about things.

      Hola Max, that was so beautiful -- PERFECT-- what you shared. She is a Mother. Many Mothers: Yolo Ono, Bjork, Meryl Streep, Kate Bush, Mary Oliver. A Grandma, she IS way Ahead, with a rope long, way out in space, pulling us in a Wagon. The Earth should not be abandonned, She pulls us to the Earth and Reality better. You will be her friend. ❤

    With all respect, they were called "Paddy Wagons" because all the Cops were Irish. Maybe some of the the criminals too though, but the immigrant Irish had a monopoly on the Police forces in NY almost from their inception.

    I love her, but the only problem, is when you live close to boarders that have thousands and thousands of horrible people trying to follow the wonderful ppl over, and you see with your own eyes the evil that exists to the point you can’t even go to that country without being killed, it makes things far tougher than she’s saying here.

    I always regarded Laurie as an intellectual powerhouse, 2019 went to her concert, first time ever. To my astonishment from the start I felt like I was listening to yet another cnn host, a person who loves to whine how the orange man ruined her morning after finding out her favorite candidate lost. It was the end of her american dream so to speak, she went on how bad whites were when in the age of exploration. Her points reflected exactly what is today’s
    trend, a trend of being yet another host of cnn or any other network, sucking up to the system in the name of being just like you supposed to be, an obedient tool.
    Good work Laurie.

    Laurie is not speaking of globalism. She is speaking of calm decision making within the boundaries observed in nature. Our country was founded on natural law. To think otherwise is to ignore the stakes of risk taking. To ignore risk taking is to rule by authority.
    Careful as "we" will, careful as "we" go.

    • @parrycross8099
      @parrycross8099 3 года назад

      @@grovedesign1491 That would mean culture is a virus. Anderson’s quote of Burroughs is meant to show that art is as important as rationality, not that rationality and language are bad. To say there are no borders is irrational and manifestly untrue. “Boarders” need to get out more and stop living at school.

    I saw her at a live "concert." All she did was read stories from that morning's LA Times -- without giving attribution! Who does that? No one there seemed to notice. They all thought she was brilliant. Stupid mooks! We paid $25 for a $1 paper. I should have demanded my money back.

    I love you, Laurie, but 1 BILLION homeless people? Really? "ou cannot close your doors anymore, everybody's banging on them." Really? Who's banging on the doors to Mexico? Venezuela? Russia? Most of Asia, India? Some of your views are very inspirational, but when you go political, you really end up in La La Land.

      All non African people living today are descended from individuals that left Africa, due to climate change, 50,000 years ago. We are all more inter-related than we think. But the most important thing is this: Humans by nature are migratory. Even within the last thousand years (after the advent of the city state, the creation of money, and the concept of personal property) there have continued to be a mixing and blending of populations who were compelled to uproot in order to thrive and survive. You cannot go somewhere in the world and find the population of a country to be pure. The island of Britannia (Great Britain) was occupied by the Romans. Long after the Romans left, Britain conquered Ireland and eventually rose to be the largest colonial superpower in history. When you go to London you will find Brits who's ancestry runs the gamut from African, Indian, Chinese, Irish, North American, etc. This has happened all over Europe (and the rest of the world) on differing scales. When you go to London and you meet English people - "English" is a construct. It is a category used to classify a group of people. The truth is more complex and interconnected than what you perceive.

    • @morganfjp
      @morganfjp 3 года назад +1

      So when you go to another country you think those people have been pure bred since the beginning of time and none of them have stepped outside their borders. Jesus Christ how naïve you are!
