Been going through all your stuff back to the beginning, Ricky. You've really offered everyone a phenomenal education in not just the guitar, but in music. THANK you!
Keep discovering these little gems now and again. Sometimes I hear you say 'you don't know, what you don't know'. Which is very true. Then again, at times, 'you don't know, what you do know'. That is because we tend to stay in a comfort zone without exploring the options available. This video is an example of this. I would normally stay in a safe zone, yet there it was in front of my face, staring at me...I have the option to move up an Octave, play the same notes and sound even more professional...well at least give that impression...lol. What a great tutorial. Cheers Ricky.
1975 music ed grad here, 3rd year into learning classical guitar. Watching 2nd video of yours and I'm so impressed--this info is literally jaw dropping for me! You are such a wonderful teacher!
Lynne! Wow! Truly blown away with your comment. Thank YOU for taking the time to watch and comment. I have a tone more videos planned. I hope you find them all useful!
I absolutely agree. I'm self taught via iTunes really, no intention of being pro with the guitar, but it's an instrument of choice and I always loved the sound.whenni started learning how to play and all unknown now, it's mind boggling that you make everything so much easier to understand. You sincerely truly are blessed. Thank you.
Ricky, as a beginner, I have watched untold videos for the fretboard and remained confused aa ever. I have now watched three of your videos and finally a light bulb has gone off. I hate to admitted it but I was still counting 13, 14, 15 frets beyond the 12th. Your simple comment that 13 is really 1 all over again is so simple I am a fan for life. Thank you and keep 'em coming.
You are the first person I've seen to give an explanation other than random placement of the dots. Thank you! I never realized where to find middle c on guitar also.
Shawna! Thanks for all the genius comments. Can you please pass that on to my wife when she's annoyed at me lol. I super appreciate you taking the time out of your day to watch my videos and even more so for commenting too :)
It occurs to me the dots are set up to let you easily find notes and chords across the neck in thirds, fifths, 7ths 9ths 12ths .... a quick reference to find the closest chord in your key to run out the chords all the way easily... dude... I can't even sleep at night I am so excited!
You sir are a genius. It’s one thing to understand theory - it’s another to communicate it effectively and demonstrate it’s application. I’m an applied scientist self taught on guitar 30 years ago with big gaps in my understanding of the instrument and it’s marriage to music theory. Thank you. PS great Marvel poster in the background.
U are giving me my 1st lessons. Started memorizing fret board be4 I had a guitar. Saw these dots & noticed their placement. Thank U 4 tying it 2gether w/explanation. Already sing in church. Looking 4ward 2 getting 2 where I can sing & play. Accompany myself w/o outside help. Thanks again.
Hi Ricky, Ive just come across your channel. I love the way you appeal to the intellect as well as the practical, please keep them coming, best wishes.
Excellent thank you. I have been searching for this explanation on guitar theory. I am following you. As a retired drummer, I have been trying to play guitar for 10 years but I find guitar a mystery, until now, the fog is finally clearing!
I have your book and really appreciate the clever ways you have found to help us learn to navigate the fretboard. A slight correction to your video may be in order, however: I believe the A string is actually tuned to 110Hz. I just found out that guitar notation is written in treble clef but in a different octave than the instrument is played in! Keep up the great videos!
Yep like the others this worked for me too. Establishing this geometry repeating down the neck shows us that is not random. Couldn't see it before this video. Thanks a million Ricky.
2 mins and an ad😂, utterly frustrating as this guy is pure gold😎... Subscribed hoping I can find as ad blocking program. Settle down for the the night, phone on pillow, start learning think brilliant then wtf the another sodding advert, grab phone again, repeat until think sod this, back to Andy or Justin's guitar lessons.
Im so happy to pick another idea oh what a wonderful tip from you sir! Cheers from the Philippines...this one eases even more of the visualization so its way more easier to learn some more
Excellent video. There's a serious lack of technical understanding of the guitar's mechanics. I first stumbled on breakthrough information like what you've mentioned in a book from the 70's called Be Dangerous On Rock Guitar, I got in touch with the writer and he sent me some PDF material that came with the original book package, being as it's out of print. I also got in touch with the guitarist from Television, Richard Lloyd, because he did a video series for Guitar World where he hinted about the guitar's function around fourths; sadly, the interview never happened with him due to difficulties at his end, to put it politely...but I'd love to have had some deeper insight on what he was driving at because his video didn't go into much more depth at all.
Thank you. I've watched two of your videos and as a beginner I learned two new ways to look at the fretboard. These are things that I never found in books or was taught in past attempts to learn the guitar.
You are the best teacher I have ever seen. Thanks so much. I would love to ask if you can do a video on string picking focusing on the right hand. Thanks
Hi Rick thanks for the useful theory. 2 things: What is the significance of the placement of the fret markers at 3, 5, 7, 9? You were headed there for an explanation but got side tracked. Second thing is that the open A string is at 110Hz and 440Hz is on the 5th fret of the thin E string (as well as in other locations on the fretboard). The hertz doubles with each octave.
Hey Rickey , My mind needed to know the theory of the fretboard and that thing with pytharagrym was amazing , not that math is my strong point but I've heard music is math ..and the more I learn about the guitar it seems to be so .
Damn Ricky.. You are good at this, you should become a guitar teacher! I never seen Jesus, but Im gonna keep an eye on you. Just seen the guitar-light again. Thanks for visualizing and making Guitar understandably.. :-)
I am a guitar teacher Brian haha. That's why my stuff works. I've been teaching for over 30 years now (Yikes! I feel old saying that!) Maybe I should do an "about me" video lol. Thanks for commenting and watching my friend :)
I think, I have learned more from yours than from any other tutorial. Thanks for that! What I do NOT understand: Why should someone put markers on the fretboard mirroring inwards? Just to sort out the "devils note"? What is the musical approach on this?
Instructions unclear, got a Fretless bass with no inlays and accidentally played the fourth sonata by Mozart on the higher register instead of my lick. Just kidding, awesome video!
Mind openning, just a big favor next time could you plug your guirar, or use an acustic guitar so that there is a little of a sound from the guitar please, regards and thank you.
Your method of explaining technical detail is always captivating as was your cycle of 4ths "BEADGCF" video. But as others have pointed out, the video quality here is a trifle shite (sorry). I'm still a fan.
+Mick Haha I know exactly what hat you mean! My mind is already made up to re-record all these when I’ve finished setting up a dedicated space to producing videos. Thanks for being a fan though lol. I promise it will all get better very soon!
Thank you! Haha. Not for long! I’ve recorded most of my video on a 2009 iMac. However I’ve just bagged a Canon m50 and will be remaking all my videos in HD loveliness! Thanks for watching and commenting Rick :)
You start off with Pythagoreus' Theorom and why the dots are where they are and how they're relative to the non-dotted frets in position. You then go into the 12 note scale repeating itself an octave higher above the 12th fret but never end up explaining why the other dotted frets are where they are, leaving Pythagorus out in the cold. Is it all Greek to you?
Hiya Brice. I didn't dive into the Pythagoras massively as it's super nerdy and most folks won't be that interested. To be fair it's probably worth a separate video for the nerds as I'm fascinated with meantone tuning, the Pythagorean comma and we perceive music based on equal temperament. We owe a lot to the triangle dude's work on the monochord and his visit to study with the ancient Chaldeans.
@@rickysguitar Ok, I watched your video cause it's a subject I'm interested in, very interested, it's part of my daily practice, I'm just saying about all the words. Peace.
Been going through all your stuff back to the beginning, Ricky. You've really offered everyone a phenomenal education in not just the guitar, but in music. THANK you!
I agree ! I now visually read the guitar so much easier
You are an historian, artist, musician, humanitarian and a philosopher. You are my guru

Where have you been all my life. I'm blown away by how much more sense all the guitar stuff makes through your perspective
Ricky, as a beginner, I have watched untold videos for the fretboard and remained confused aa ever. I have now watched three of your videos and finally a light bulb has gone off. Last statement... EXACTLY the way I think - your are totally correct... simplify it!
Everytime I see one of your videos I learn a little something extra that I can't get anywhere else, thanks.
You are the first person I've seen to give an explanation other than random placement of the dots. Thank you! I never realized where to find middle c on guitar also.
Ricky... Hello Jerome (Jerry) here.
Because of your video... I will never think about 15th and 17th fret's anymore.
I'm just going to Recycle!
wow lmao the looking at the fretboard after the 12th fret at the same way as the beginning is GENIUS
Shawna! Thanks for all the genius comments. Can you please pass that on to my wife when she's annoyed at me lol. I super appreciate you taking the time out of your day to watch my videos and even more so for commenting too :)
Best guitar teacher that I have found on the internet

Its 1.23 am in mississauga canada....and you've got me hooked onbthe guitar 🎸 😍 ❤ 💕
Excellent explanation. I’ve not seen anyone explain these concepts as well as you have. I’ve made you my official guitar teacher! :-) thank you
Omg....Ricky......what u showed me in this video....no guitar book did!!!! You are amazing!!!!
Wow! I loved this video...I feel the gloriousness of my guitar. Literally got goosebumps. Thank you for this wonderful explanation.
This is super helpful! Makes much more sense than just memorizing all the notes
I keep coming back to this channel in making sense of what I've read or heard.
Keep'em coming and Thank you !
Ricky, you are the king guitar teacher.
I Love the way how you explain how the guitar works. I’m now hooked.
You sir are a genius. It’s one thing to understand theory - it’s another to communicate it effectively and demonstrate it’s application. I’m an applied scientist self taught on guitar 30 years ago with big gaps in my understanding of the instrument and it’s marriage to music theory. Thank you.

Just came a cross this , I’m a beginner guitarist aged 60, nearly turned it of then it started to make sense, a lot of sense , thanks keep them coming
+Geoff Keogh Thanks for sticking at it. I’m super pleased you found it worth it. More videos coming soon!

Great video and explanation. Wish I knew this when I started playing guitar many years ago. Thank you so much for your time.
This type of stuff can really help people.
I hope so Mike. It's why I do it lol. thanks for watching :)

I love the Black keys! Great video as always. Something that doesn't look symmetrical actually is!
You make it easy to understand just great stuff
Thanks, Rick. That just makes sense. I appreciate your common sense videos.
Really interesting and informative. Thanks !
Never made that Discovery on my own. Thanks!
One of the best explanations I've listened on the net. A truely teacher! Should you invest in a better audio/video quality and u'll b the 1
Thank you! Check out my newer videos. I really do need to remake this one as I actually have a much better camera now!
Brilliant Ricky, I'm an Alto Tenor in choir, perfect scores!
You gotta get a Rhodie!
Journey Into Mystery #120!

Liked and Subscribed :D

Eyup Trevor, I super appreciate this, thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
Lots of great stuff Ricky thanks
Hi Ed! Thanks for watching and commenting my friend :)
This was helpful thank you sensei 🙌

genius to visualize
i have a 24 fret model guitar you can really tell the difference in pitch when you go from open to 24
great lesson....thanks Ricky
Brilliant. Thank you.
Very nice. Keep it coming!
what fret ranges are covered by the 4 different voicings? I captured 1-3 as Bass; 14 and on for Soprano. What are the remaining voice fret ranges?
Awesome 🤩
Thanks Ricky
Thanks it was really helpful for me :)
Feckkin brilliant👍😎
Thank you
Brilliant 👍
Instructions unclear, got a Fretless bass with no inlays
and accidentally played the fourth sonata by Mozart on the higher register instead of my lick.
Just kidding, awesome video!
6/1 w 4 wh 2 w 5 w 3 wh 6/1 🎸
"Pythagoras the triangles dude" hahaha
Who knew a boring mathematics guy was so deep Berni? Thanks for commenting. Glad I made a funny you appreciated buddy :)
Mind openning, just a big favor next time could you plug your guirar, or use an acustic guitar so that there is a little of a sound from the guitar please, regards and thank you.
I keep meaning to reshoot this video. It was a live broadcast and I had technical issues with new gear.
Wow

so notes from the 12th fret higher are the same as from open string to 12th? woow, that's really shocking!!!
you're such a great teacher, but why do the videos look like a 1996 Nokia cellphone?
Thank you! Haha. Not for long! I’ve recorded most of my video on a 2009 iMac. However I’ve just bagged a Canon m50 and will be remaking all my videos in HD loveliness! Thanks for watching and commenting Rick :)

Amazing content. But really wish you had not shot this video with a turnip.
In a sense...In every guitar there is really two guitars.
I was told there would be no math.
Lies. Geometry is math
That's alot verbiage to say everything repeats after the 12th fret, didn't need to know about Pythagarus.
Some people are interested in that stuff buddy. Thanks for watching.
@@rickysguitar Ok, I watched your video cause it's a subject I'm interested in, very interested, it's part of my daily practice, I'm just saying about all the words. Peace.
would have liked it better if it wasn't so hard to watch (very jumpy)
Are you freaking serious?
Brilliant. Thank You.
