  • Serotonin is synthesized in a two-step biochemical reaction, catalyzed by the enzymes tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) and aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase. Genetically engineered mice whose brains do not produce serotonin show increased aggression, among other behavioral phenotypes.
