My mom's orange tabby does this too. I think it's because the orange tabby wants to keep a watch for any threats in the area before dozing off. If a loud noise happens, they won't be so startled waking up because of their defensive position.
Probably hes seeking a dark place and dont have, my random guess ? Maybe have a box for the where its dark where they can inside and not be needed to sleep like that
I got a stray cat which is gray. And another one which is black and white. The stray cat which is gray hates the black and white one so we keep them seperated a lot of the time
