  • In this video I am preparing stones for a stone cabin build. These header stones will tie together the interior and exterior walls of the cabin. I demonstrate using a "hand set" from Trow and Holden to rock face or "pitch" sawn faces off of these stones. Stay tuned for more progress on this cabin build, it will be a neat project

    Love the style of this video! Very informative with the text in between for someone, like me, whose mother language isn't English. You're absolutely right! Safety should always come first, no matter how silly one might think it is or looks!
    Can't wait to see more of this Cabin coming to life.

    You did not look silly. All body parts are important.
    Now I know why stone work is expensive but is is nice.

    As I watched you deftly shape the stone I thought of the centuries of craftsmen who have worked with stone, and to watch you continue this tradition is both fascinating and satisfying. You're a good teacher - clear explanations, and you don't talk too fast. Thanks, Alfred.

    I’m worried about your feet Alfred. I’m sure you have steel caps on but I still worry. May I suggest you find a sturdier table as it’s very wobbly. I agree about the PPE. You only get one set of lungs and you can’t go back. I learned something new today. Thank you. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩

    Interesting. The granite is a beautiful color and texture. You should Shaw an initial drawing of what’s going on. It looks like your going to pillow block the whole wall. Two layers thick with the header stones tieing the wall together.
    I wonder. Can you use the stone to make a house foundation this way? Build the perimeter wall using this approach anchored on your footers below the frost line. Then fill the interior space with sand foam and then poured concrete to form the first floor. Then build the timber frame on top of this foundation.
    The construction of a pumped foundation isn’t hard but it can be a pain. Getting mixers up “Vermont Logging Trails” otherwise known as class 4 roads could be a challenge.

    I’m in awe of what you can do with stone. Have you studied builds like Machu Pichu? Other than the electric saws have techniques changed a lot since then?

    • @maxatkin73
      @maxatkin73 Год назад

      I read an amazing article on Machu Pichu.. I wish i had it.. They discovered super corrosive clay in the bottom of copper mines that ate thruough stone.. And i believe they mixed this clay w certain herbs.. As mortar and they melted and reacted the stones together.. there's still marks and stains on the edges..

    Hey man, I’m trying to find land right now to build a stone cottage myself! I’m gonna use the coursed, random rubble method, Scottish style. Trying to find a good plot somewhere up in NE PA. Though I’ve also considered upstate NY, Vermont or New Hampshire.

    Are you gonna build on a concrete slab or dig a trench below the frost line and line the bottom with gravel (or even a French drain underneath that) then stack half boulders on top of that? I’m debating about that because concrete slabs require rebar and that’ll spall out after about 50 years or so. BTW, I’m following the guidance of Ian Cramb’s “Stone Mason’s Gospel”.

    Thanks for this video. This is what I am looking for because I am trying to learn to split and face stone. Our property has lots and lots of rocks and I have several places I would like some rock walls. I bought a bunch of books and watched a bunch of videos. I needed that to get an idea of what tools I needed and the basic techniques. However, as usual the best way to learn is by doing. I am getting there. I don't have the brain to try and fit a bunch of irregular shaped stones so I am sorting through them and making them as flat and square as possible. It is great fun when a split goes right. Keep the videos coming please.
