Something that always bothered me about Perfect Dark was the lack of consistence in her design. You would look at official drawings, in-game model, CGI renders and live performances, and Johanna would like so different every time. It runs better, it's just a shame they had to go screwing with Joanna's face, among other questionable "artistic" changes. Why Japanese gamers, who are know to be hardcore, needed shields on Perfect Agent, we'll never know.

By the way, Censored Gaming, your emulator isn’t emulating the framebuffer and isn’t rendering some effects. You should use Glide64 or GLideN64 rather than Jabo’s Direct3D. Carrington Villa is a prime example, as without framebuffer emulation it just doesn’t have a sky.
The knife censorship also affected the Assault Ship mission! Instead of starting out with a knife, you start out with a Falcon 2! I think it made the beginning area easier, to be honest! ^-^
80's Japan: American's can't RPG, so dumb it down. Oh, except for action games, make those harder so they can't rent it and beat it. 90's America: Japanese can't 3D action games, so dumb it down.
It’s also worth noting that due to the knife not being an available weapon in the game for the Japan release. That on the attack ship covert assault mission once you start the mission, Joanna is equipped with a falcon 2 only and no combat knife whereas in the English version she only has the combat knife!
The Initiative is using the Red and Black concept for Perfect Dark. Cool to see they did it, Red my favourite color so I always wanted it to be the main color in PD and many other game. Big was my surprise when they showed the trailer using that color scheme.

Making the bodies fade might have also been an effort to improve the framerates. Lots of games from that era that didn't shy from violence did the same thing to save memory and rendering time.
Yeah knives are still pretty iffy now a days in Japan. There was the Akihabara stabbing a decade ago and the Kyoto Animation arsonist was said to have a bag of knives. Knives and Otakus are going be a sore spots for at least a couple more decades now.
The aftermath of that horrible incident will probably be more censorship and all entertainment taking a break from similar violent scenes. Just like the 2011 earthquake/tsunami/meltdown putting Disaster Report on hiatus for several years

I like the Japanese version's intro, but the other changes in my opinion kind of messed it up, especially the fact the enemies' death and lack of blood behave exactly like Goldeneye. 2:05 Why use Shigeru Mayamoto's face and kill the bot? Show some respect to that great man!
Could have been one of those touch up things developers do when it is coming to another country where they fix glitches, add new content or make the characters look better when they changed her face.
The Japanese version is actually better. Because the dead bodies fade away quickly, it means that the game runs a lot smoother, due to not having a bunch of clutter on the map at once.
I have to say I'm quite surprised that the vast majority of comments seems to prefer the Japanese version of Joanna. I find the English version to be far superior. And I really disliked what they did to her face in the xbox remaster.

So much so that you'd call the game that, and try to map over the blue logo with red? Objectively the game's hero colors are blue and silver. It's always been blue and silver. It's all over the signature uniforms, all of the logos, all of the key graphics. The Falcon 2 is blue/silver. The Datadyne colors are blue/silver. The CI colors are blue/silver. Blue is everywhere in this game. If you randomly asked me "hey what color do you associate with Perfect Dark?" It's clearly, immediately, easily, obviously, only one possible answer: Blue. The only thing that's Red and Black is the goddamn death animation screen; so what, did they just assume since you see that so much may as well call it that?

I like both of Joanna's faces. If I had to choose one over the other though? Probably the Japanese version. Yeah, Joanna isn't suppose to be Asian, but I like it just a little more. Also the fact that the blood effects have been removed and bodies fade away actually just brings Perfect Dark a little closer to her Goldeneye origins. A homage, almost.
Man, I would love a PC port of the XBLA version (as well as Perfect Dark Zero). That's one of the best HD remasters I've ever played. You know what really hurts though? The same team that remastered Perfect Dark also did Goldeneye 007. Which, despite being more or less complete, never got released due to licensing issues (which is why we ended up getting the far less interesting Goldeneye remake with Daniel Craig instead). I suppose I can settle with the emulator and mouse injector control, which by the way is really enjoyable and gameplay wise the games hold up really well with it. Makes the game a bit to easy though since they were designed with a one stick controller in mind. BTW there is Goldeneye 25. The guy making the music also worked on Goldeneye: Source. He really knows how to imitate Eric Serra, the film's composer.

I have an idea: instead of making the change and forcing the audience to live with it, why don't we make those changes OPTIONS inside the game that can be turned on or off? Better yet, before changing covers like that, why not make dual releases with different covers and gauge player interest? There may actually be no need to change the covers like that, meaning less expenses in the localization and quicker release dates.

Japanese Crash Bandicoot looks cooler imo. Much more fun and whimsical looking. Joanna Dark's changes to her face are kind of a wash to me. She looks like a young Tilda Swinton.

Final note ... rare messed most of their n64 games up in terms of framerate with many un needed lighting effects and its as if they went mental with dynamic lighting in perfect dark but another game that suffers badly is diddy kong racing because of the world lighting from the sun So of there are any clever modders out there .... mod out the lighting in both games please,od love to play thoae games with a better framerate

Honestly I personally prefer the japanese character design. I get more of a slick secret agent vibe from it, and less of a desk secretary picking her kids up from school one like the US character.

Banjo & Kazooie are confirmed for Smash Ultimate later this fall, so it's likely that we may get a Nintendo Switch version of Rare Replay sometime in the future.

It does because the game doesn't have to worry about body counts and it reduces lag.
It does run a bit better, the fading is similar to in goldeneye where it was done for performance reasons.

They did the samething in goldeneye the hunting knives were taking out and replaced with another swapping code. They did it for copyright reasons.
It also had something to do with being sued over weapon copyrights in some cases.

Banjo & Kazooie are confirmed for Smash Ultimate later this fall, so it's likely that we may get a Nintendo Switch version of Rare Replay sometime in the future.
@@maverickhuntermeta4954 oh I know about banjo in smash. About rare replay is a mystery... Would be a nice addition though but it's up to Microsoft and Nintendo.
