Hey Mike, my Powercolor 580 Dragon was doing exactly this so I ordered 2 BeQuiet 120mmcase fans and fitted them to the chassis as you directed in your video. Im not joking, the running temperatures dropped by 20 degrees !!! And with them being BeQuiet fans I have them maxed out via the bios settings and I can barely hear the card !!! Thanks for the video, I really appreciate it.

For anyone looking to do a custom GPU fan cooler, they make 4 or 5 Pin VGA PWM Mini PH Connector to Dual PWM 4 Pin Fan Cable Splitters. So this way you can attach 4 pin PWM PC fans (with the correct amperage) directly to your GPU fan header so that way it can control the fans itself. Also if you're looking to make a custom shroud for mounting, polycarbonate is cheap, easy to work with, and will not shatter unlike acrylic.
Great idea! I want to help improve this situation. Perhaps 3D printed L brackets matching the holes where the fans overlap. Than drill two holes into the sides of the fan shroud and screw the screws from inside. Let me know what ya think.
what i do since 13 years. the side panel, put in 4 fans. they get cool air directly in to the graphics card and cpu fans. they also blow more air on the vrm's and memory. 4 big fans instea of the side panel. they dont need much rpm, its just a wall of air blowing direclty on the side of the board. drops 10 degrees in everything easy
My RX580 from 2017 finally dropped cooling performance, mined a couple of years when I did not use my PC and the cooling paste had no issues there. Then I did not use my PC a lot and tried gaming again when I came back without the mining and the GPU cooling paste dried up. The difference in insane 52% fans speed kept the GPU around 55C, now I can't even keep the card under 72C whit fans speeds up to 80%. Tripple fan strix cooler was always able to cool the card even with OC's up to 1460MHz CORE and 2450MHz VRAM with the card pulling 164 watts, termal paste replacement and removing dust should be enough if the cards run factory voltages and around 130 watts usage.
i think this 2 fan's did a better job than original :) , i did some thing close with my Power supply when fan stop and i plug one 100mm and power i take from molex 4 pin connector as it was old pc :)
Wow! Before watching this video, i was considering about water-cooling my GPU. But since i have some unused case fan lying around. I'll do just like what you did in this video.
Nice fix for the time being! Looks like a beefy version of my white RX580 Armour by MSI. Like the white and black accents, and it doesnt look half bad at all with how you rigged up the Arctic fans.
After debating on whether or not we should get an Artic Accelelro to replace our dead Gigabyte RX 480 fans, we stumbled upon this video.. never thought of attaching 120mm fans to the shroud! BRILLIANT!
The 120mm fans I had didn’t perform or fit as well as I hoped so I bought two Startech 90mm case fans and strapped it to the heatsink. It cooled my RX480 (oc’d) to 75C at full load. Cheaper than Ali Express fans and has been solid for the past few weeks during my gaming sessions!
Thanks. That was really helpful. I'm going do this to my Dell/Alienware RTX 3080. And hopefully I can keep the "GEFORCE RTX" light on the side of the shroud.
I believe someone else commented about the sticky tape. It's possible to drill into the 120 fan frame from the bottom after mounting with the initial two screws. Also, an 11/64ths drill bit worked PERFECT for me.
I did this to my GTX 1080 after both my fans died. I couldn't mount the 120mm fans with zip ties so I used dubble sided tape and it hasn't fallen off yet. I connected my fans to the motherboard but the fans didn't spin fast enough so I bought a pmw to vga cable so I could connect them directly to GPU instead, and now it works great I never go over 50c
Wouldn't the smaller fan holes on the shroud be dead center on the fans' dead spots? I thought the minimal airflow of a fan is the axis area, and the maximal is the edge of the fan blade?
Man you will be my savior! I have an RX 590 and one of the fans is making a periodic ticking sound regardless of fan speed and it's driving me up the wall. In case you or someone else sees this: is it worth getting dust filters for the underside / top of the fans since they are lifted from the metal?
No problem 👍 i don't think a filter would do much really the dust particles are so small the filter would need to be very closed and that would increase noise and rpms
@@mikesunboxing It is great! Although i have had a few artifacts occuring and even a few crashes without overclocking :/ Have the 4gb model aswell because i am only playing at 1080p, so your red devil is still beter i believe!
I have seen RIOTORO have a new convertible case, it isnt like anything else i have seen. I'm not sure if i like it or not. Might be a challenge for me :-)
I have an RX 580 with no issues so far, but I had to mod my older R9 280 because it would run hot even after thermal paste replacement. I cut the rear half and added a PCI case slot fan which ended up looking like it was part of the GPU. In your case I would have went with either 80mm or 92mm case fans which would have fit better and can be purchased cheap or pulled from many devices like power supplies. If you have a multi-meter you could check the voltage of the GPU fan header and you might be able to connect the case fans to the header with a splitter instead on using the motherboard or PSU connectors if the voltage is 12vM most pc fans can run 12v and under but wont run up to full speed.
Awesome DIY project mate - good work and thanks for the inspiration. I'm running the XFX GTS, 1425 MHz on the core and 2100 MHz on the memory. It's doing its job after a repaste, but at around 2800 fan rpm... I think I'll give this a go during the holidays. Thanks again 👌😎
Just a little update for the ones curious. Strapped a couple of old fans from my Corsair H80, and during Heaven benchmark it ran the same temperatures at around 800-1.000 rpms slower and a bit more quiet. Hurrah for speedfan. I'll give it a week or two under different loads to get a better idea of the project. Happy holidays to you all.
I'd figure this might have been a bit more straightforward if you elected to use 92mm or 80 fans instead: I think you might have been able to get all of the fan screw points in the shroud and avoided the sticky stuff. Arctic F8s and F9s are cheap and I think they'd be very performant here! My RX 580's fan is starting to go, so thank you for the video and idea! Now I need a drill...
The smaller fans would definitely fit better, however it's possible to drill into the 120 fan frame from the bottom after mounting with the initial two screws.
Should have designed a new shroud around the arctic fans to decrease the height as it's too tall and gotten a few male to female connector wires to make it be more compact
Make sure to use high end high static pressure fan for this project, I used ID cooling ZF-12025 for xfx rx580 xxx and the temperature ended up 5C++ more 😂
I almost want to put a pair of 92mm air penetration fans on 2060.. I mean it's already good. But I think the extra airflow would stop it hitting thermal ceilings in summer...
Very tempted to do something like this to my RX 580 Red Devil. Fans still work on it but it is loud under load. It's the last part of my build to be upgraded. Considering how long I might have to wait. Water cooling is even tempting me too.
Hi can u give some opinions of this ? Both of my fans on rx580 died . So should i just directly put my fans on top of heatsink or just doing like yours, which is better?
@@mikesunboxing idk yesterday was fine suddenly today its stop working. Already try reinstall driver, switch bios even replugged the fans connector none of em working . Well going to try this for my last resort tho , was using sapphire nitro edition . Even my led not working
Bro can you use it with reversing the direction of fans ? 😊 A regular one is pushing the outside air inside which is wrong , but I don't know why GPU companies do that . As air should be pulled outside the gpu the hot air should not pushed to the GPU circuit which can cause damage . So it's really good that if you use unconventional way by pulling the air out , please correct me if I am wrong.
yes you can do that. regarding the airflow direction, the air in the case is likely to be between 20-40c at the most, the GPU chip is well within the range of that with most chips idling around 30-40c and some between 70-100c under full load. i see what you mean put regardless of the fan direction when inside the case, the air temps will be the same or close and most fans are designed to blow rather than suck
Thanks for making this video, Im about to change my rx 570 fan. Is it really need to get 2 120mm fan? I mean 8cm Noctua fan will be fit nicely, should I get the 8cm or 12cm?
@@mikesunboxing I've just cleaned the fan bearing and spray a bit of WD-40, now the fans work normally not sticky like before. But one fan kinda wobble while spinning, maybe will change to noctua.
Great idea! 1) Do you have the video where you drilled the two holes? 2) What do you think that would happen if I add the two extra fans on top of the stock working two fans? My Sapphire RX 580 fans are working fine, but I'm looking for a way to make it work cooler.
On rx 580 nitro oc sapphire i was reching with stock fans 71 73 degrees, now just changed the thermal paste with arctic 2mx and max temperature on extreme gaming is around 55 to 61degrees with only 60% fan speed, when i will overclock it to 1500mhz from 1420mhz maybe i will go for 2x fans 92mm
not really, they often use a pwm signal but the cabling is different, you can get a GPU pwm to fan pwm adapter, that is if your video card uses that type of plug
Thank you. I'm thinking about just pull the hole cooling off the GPU and put a CPU watter-cooling pump on along with another case fan, and running it all off the board's BIOS. I'm getting tiered of having to always reset my settings every time the system changes it.@@mikesunboxing
Mike, I need to do something like this. I have an XFX RX580, and even with new generic fans, they still make unpleasant noises, like a hum that comes and goes depending on RPM, and I hate it. I am interested in sticking on some Arctic fans, so are there better ways of doing it since you made this video? Thanks
my advice is to get a PWM cable adapter to connect the fans to the GPU rather than the motherboard, most manufacturers have one, you can find them pretty easy on ali express
@@mikesunboxing I ordered 2nd replacement fans from Amazon with low confidence (as I am also thinking about resellability), but then I decided that your method is going to satisfy my desire for quieter gaming, and again, Amazon have the parts. Please tell me if I am missing anything: I will order 2 x Arctic P12 PWM fans (are the 120mm fans good size for the XFX?), and also a splitter cable that looks like two fans will plug into it enabling the GPU header to be used: "PWM 4pin to 2X 4pin GPU VGA". I see people using zip-ties, so is that a good method to attach them or should I think about something else? Yeah, I've had enough of those stock fans, now that I have my PC a bit closer to me. I would like to see some effort by the manufactures to make the fans a bit quieter, as there are no design features with that in mind whatsoever.
I did this to my rx 480 with two phanteks 120mm fans and wow what an amazing difference there was with sound. Much improved compared to the two 92mm fans that were on it originally. I want to do this to my rtx 2060 super but I think Asus voids your warranty if you remove the shroud.
Good work. But I still am confused about the saying that "the RX580s run pretty hot"; mine was running at stock settings 1350/2000 @ 1.15v around 80-82c with 3000-3200rpm fan speed before thermal paste replacement. I tried to see if changing paste makes it any better. I was doubtful as the fin density on RX580 Red Dragon card isn't that great. So I tried this Arctic Ceramique paste I had lying around for almost a couple of years. Spread a thin layer and saw the temps dropped to 73-75c under max load at just 2480-2500rpm even with a slight OC 1400/2000 @ 1.15v. Ambient temps are around 27c. Also my favorite part is the target temperature fan adjustment. Mine is set to a target temp of 75c and if the card is running cooler than 75 then the fan ramps down to a lower rpm as to reduce the noise while still maintaining 75c or less. If I use MX-4 or something better you can estimate the results are indeed going to be even better.
Change the rad all the original are bad, best nickel-plated copper on arctic accelero, the gain is significant. The fans do not do everything far from it, it is especially the quality of the rad which counts first.
I have rx 580 i also did this with my gpu with fans 1.60 amp runs @4100 rpm which is noisy like a jet. i attached pair of it but there is 0% difference in temps literally its always touching 80 to 84 diggeres before and after coustomization. Then i did one more experiment I opend the case turned my room temperatures into 22° with (Ac settings 16°) sealing fan On then i played few games still there is no difference. Both fans running at 100% potential with Ac+ sealing fan on literally no differences what shall i consider it?
I have the rx580 msi gaming x and having a poblem with one fan no working properly, was going to replace with a Chinese copy from AliExpress but might do this instead
@@mikesunboxing thanks for the quick reply and easy to follow guide. I think i will try your method. Same reason for not buying a complete aftermarket cooler. Gpu gets cooled properly-ish, but the gigabyte fans under load hurt my ears... :P Thanks again!
I will try it today to my r9 380, because i tried replacing the fan, but still it overheats, ive already underclocked it and changed the thermal paste and it still goes 90c up on 100% usage. up to 97c even. Will update this post later if it fixes my overheating problems. Sadly i can't afford any gpu now cause of the prices. i'd rather less than 40$ on a 120mm case fan.

Hello sir, sorry for the late comment. I'm interested in making the same mod for my gpu which is same as yours(mine gets really hots to ~85c until my pc restarts itself)so there I have a few question to ask 1)how is the overall gpu temperature aftermath?does it still hold up to 70c like in the video? 2)do I need to use a specific fan case that has high rpm or any fan case should be good to go? 3)(just a curious)will this 'mod' ever void your GPU warranty? Anyway thanks for the quality content, subbed and liked!
I did think about a water block but most of them are around the same price as the card so I would rather sink that money into an upgrade rather than prolonging the life of the rx580. It is was a 1080 or something then I would definitely do it ,😀
I did this with my armor rx580 8gb and it only helped with delaying the temps a little from reaching 90c or 88c like I dont understand I just want a cool card. The cards I used with my mod were ARCTIC BioniX F120 - 120 mm Gaming Case Fan. What did I do wrong and even if it was my case It wouldn't effect my cards heat that bad unless i had like no case fans.

@@mikesunboxing Im pretty sure I know why its because I set a fan curve in bios and the fan curve goes off of system temps not the gpu temps so it doesnt ramp up and I dont want the fans to run at a constant fast speed because when its idle i want quietness
Hello! Came here after searching for some cooling ideas for my RX 580 since it heats up like a grill when playing the most recent game on the market "Control". My question is: Is the amount of free space on the case heavily important? I already know the answer but I would like to see how you interpret it. You see, my father bought a huuuge case, in comparison with the previous one, in order for him to make the new PC since the parts are bigger. Problem is, although the size is a huge improvement in my case, the movement of the air towards outside is heavily compromised due to the spaces being smaller now which I think is one of the main issues of the heating.
Space is important. Lots of space doesn't always make for good cooling if the airflow is lower pressure ideally it is helpful to have positive case pressure if possible to push the warm air out and keep on replacing the air inside the case with cooler air from the outside.
@@mikesunboxing So although I have lots of space, the air circulation is the main problem. This may sound childish/idiotic but would cutting parts of the case and placing a grate over them help a little?
Yes but I would have needed a mini pwm adapter then a splitter so this was a bit easier. In the end I just went and bought a new set of the OEM fans on Ali express and reverted back to stock setup with a fancurve tweak and some undervolting
I'm getting terrible temps with my Rx 480 nitro and is extremely loud. What rpm and size would you recommend for the fans? The first artic ones that you showed in the photo are good enough?
the arctic 120mm are the better option the 140mm wouldn't give you much room the bionix ones are available in different colours to suit your build if that's a thing you want to consider? amzn.to/2RJOR9t or maybe just go with the old favourites the f12 these are seriously cheap the pack of 5 is less than $20 amzn.to/2RJOZ8X
@@mikesunboxing Thanks for the reply! I'll get two 120mm ones, unfortunately Amazon doesn't like my country and I can't buy from there and where I live just one of those is like 18$US...
@@mikesunboxing From Argentina. Last year our currency got hit by inflation and US$ are like 200% more expensive and most of the PC components are extremely overpriced... Thanks again! nice videos btw, i'm going to suscribe.
@@GenesHand Sorry to hear about those prices! OUCH! The slow rpm of the fans is okay as the fans are about 50% or more larger in area covered. So yes it compensates for the RPM/Size difference. Nice job Mike. I think it doesn't look too bad and of course your thermals are pretty good now so definitely worth the effort. Would you be able to make a video on how to 'ghetto' cool a blower style card?
Nice video! I've done this with old cards twice, 120mm good quality fans are needed for "silent gaming". What scares me about buying an AMD card is how hot they still run in nearly 2020. I've sold my Gtx 960 wich had never passed 55º with PUBG at high settings, Metro Exodus on low/mid. I did changed the stock thermal compound to GC Extreme, but it was amazing how cool and silent the card was... I can't say the same about several reviews and videos from Radeon 500/ 400 series, reaching 65º+++ means noise with whatever mod you do on it :-/ though AMD is better for the money if noise is not an issue for the user, i guess...
amd cards running hot is far from an issue the silicon is made to run extremely hot so ur fine and amd cards last a long long time as well so i wouldn't sweat it man

I believe someone else commented about the sticky tape. It's possible to drill into the 120 fan frame from the bottom after mounting with the initial two screws. Also, an 11/64ths drill bit worked PERFECT for me.
thanks for the tip
then to fill that fan gap id probably use a led strip and one of those fancy gpu backplates from v1 tech
good idea
This is very great info! The cooling is better than factory.
Yes it is but looks a bit funky
How about a 3d printed mount that you screw the fans on and then screw to the same place as the other fans
good idea
Yo can even make it so that it channel's the air like the original
Alexander Acevedo all I need is a 3D printer now
What if you design it and have a 3d printing company do it for you, there has to be one
a couple of rgb fans would look better imo as the extra bling would take your eye off the mod and give it a more saleable reason for resale?
yes that is a really good point, although at the time RGB fans were still quite expensive compared with the arctic f12's etc.
Awesome I should have got the pwm vga cable
Thanks Mike for tips, I going to do this for my GPU's miner rig.
Have fun!
That video gave my an idea. I should model a 3D shroud for fans and make it to be attachable to the GPU heatsink, like the original shroud.
I wish the tech was available at a sensible price when I was doing this myself
Wouldn't the smaller fan holes on the shroud be dead center on the fans' dead spots? I thought the minimal airflow of a fan is the axis area, and the maximal is the edge of the fan blade?
yeah you are probably right there
Thinking about doing this to my RX 580 dual. It's extremely loud and runs at over 80c.
It is a good way to keep the temps under control. Either this or a Arctic Accelero?
I thinking about doing the same thing. Same card, same problem. I want to try it with noctua fans
I have gone back to the original fans and under volted the card and it is a very different beast now. Very happy
How much of an undervolt? And clockspeeds
@@fernandoaguero2814 I left the clock speed and just reduced the voltage about 25mv on phase 6 and 7

I'm on on my way to liking them all Mike...
awesome!
@@mikesunboxing Thanks very much for the quick answer!

Thanks Scooter. Shortly after this mod i gave in and ordered the OEM replacement, Is isn't as cool or as quiet, but it looks a but more legit
It is fun seeing what mods you can make with stuff you have around the home. Cable ties are a wonderful thing 😀
Good luck with your mods
Just a little update for the ones curious. Strapped a couple of old fans from my Corsair H80, and during Heaven benchmark it ran the same temperatures at around 800-1.000 rpms slower and a bit more quiet. Hurrah for speedfan. I'll give it a week or two under different loads to get a better idea of the project. Happy holidays to you all.
Thanks for the update. And well done on the mods 😉
Happy Holidays
Yeah I regret buying this card but atleast I can cook my food and play games at the same time :)
The right size fans would have been a tidy way of doing it but I was working with what I had
True. Bit maybe not as quiet as the 120mm fans.
The smaller fans would definitely fit better, however it's possible to drill into the 120 fan frame from the bottom after mounting with the initial two screws.
I wonder if 92mm case fans would fit better? Not as much airflow.
Yes that is correct
Coincidence that my powercolor RX580 just had a fan failiure as well ?
Damn! Hope this gives you some ideas, or makes you realise it might be better to buy a new set of fans 😇
which fan failed on you? I had a fan failure as well!
Should have designed a new shroud around the arctic fans to decrease the height as it's too tall and gotten a few male to female connector wires to make it be more compact
wish i did do that
Make sure to use high end high static pressure fan for this project, I used ID cooling ZF-12025 for xfx rx580 xxx and the temperature ended up 5C++ more 😂
thanks for the heads up
I almost want to put a pair of 92mm air penetration fans on 2060.. I mean it's already good. But I think the extra airflow would stop it hitting thermal ceilings in summer...
try it
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Very tempted to do something like this to my RX 580 Red Devil. Fans still work on it but it is loud under load. It's the last part of my build to be upgraded. Considering how long I might have to wait. Water cooling is even tempting me too.
give it a go but i would also suggest getting the vga pwm adaptor to power the fans rather than using the motherboard
Hi can u give some opinions of this ?
Both of my fans on rx580 died . So should i just directly put my fans on top of heatsink or just doing like yours, which is better?
i would look into why both fans died, that is quite unusual
@@mikesunboxing idk yesterday was fine suddenly today its stop working. Already try reinstall driver, switch bios even replugged the fans connector none of em working . Well going to try this for my last resort tho , was using sapphire nitro edition . Even my led not working
Bro can you use it with reversing the direction of fans ? 😊 A regular one is pushing the outside air inside which is wrong , but I don't know why GPU companies do that .
As air should be pulled outside the gpu the hot air should not pushed to the GPU circuit which can cause damage . So it's really good that if you use unconventional way by pulling the air out , please correct me if I am wrong.
yes you can do that. regarding the airflow direction, the air in the case is likely to be between 20-40c at the most, the GPU chip is well within the range of that with most chips idling around 30-40c and some between 70-100c under full load.
i see what you mean put regardless of the fan direction when inside the case, the air temps will be the same or close and most fans are designed to blow rather than suck
mount those underneath card to the case and just have them blow up and leave the shroud off
that might work but the static pressure to get the air into the fins would be tricky
Hey Mike, have you tried the adapter mentioned and how would it be connected to the RX580?
i haven't and i gave up and bought some "oem" replacements from ali express for less than a tenner
I bought these but I am waiting for the fans befor I start the mod. If you are interested I will keep you up to date.

Thanks for making this video, Im about to change my rx 570 fan. Is it really need to get 2 120mm fan? I mean 8cm Noctua fan will be fit nicely, should I get the 8cm or 12cm?
entirely up to you if the noctua fits try it
@@mikesunboxing I've just cleaned the fan bearing and spray a bit of WD-40, now the fans work normally not sticky like before.
I would consider under volting the card to reduce the temps. Mine works great now with the stock fans and a new fan profile and undervolt.
On rx 580 nitro oc sapphire i was reching with stock fans 71 73 degrees, now just changed the thermal paste with arctic 2mx and max temperature on extreme gaming is around 55 to 61degrees with only 60% fan speed, when i will overclock it to 1500mhz from 1420mhz maybe i will go for 2x fans 92mm
good choice with the arctic paste, it makes a real difference
Is the wiring of the GPU Fans the same as the normal desktop cooler fans?
not really, they often use a pwm signal but the cabling is different, you can get a GPU pwm to fan pwm adapter, that is if your video card uses that type of plug

I want to do this to my rtx 2060 super but I think Asus voids your warranty if you remove the shroud.
awesome!
looked like your gpu clock was set 300mhz, more then likely due to the fan not being hooked up, its no wonder it didn't go over 66c!
It reduces down when not under load
It is always at 300mhz when you're not doing much
If I use MX-4 or something better you can estimate the results are indeed going to be even better.
the rx580 runs hot compared to the Nvidia models which are generally much cooler
Change the rad all the original are bad, best nickel-plated copper on arctic accelero, the gain is significant. The fans do not do everything far from it, it is especially the quality of the rad which counts first.
thanks Leo
The truth is, you may have the best fans in the world, if your rad is of poor quality well you will have poor heat dissipation.
Just a small question, are the fans 'sucking' or 'blowing'
they are pulling air in and pushing air through the heatsink
I have rx 580 i also did this with my gpu with fans 1.60 amp runs @4100 rpm which is noisy like a jet. i attached pair of it but there is 0% difference in temps literally its always touching 80 to 84 diggeres before and after coustomization. Then i did one more experiment I opend the case turned my room temperatures into 22° with (Ac settings 16°) sealing fan On then i played few games still there is no difference. Both fans running at 100% potential with Ac+ sealing fan on literally no differences what shall i consider it?

Mike, you used two 120mm fans. Would 140mm fans also work, or would it be too big of a size to fit on the rx 580?
It would be more depending on the width available in the case really and worth a go if you have room

1)how is the overall gpu temperature aftermath?does it still hold up to 70c like in the video?
2)do I need to use a specific fan case that has high rpm or any fan case should be good to go?
3)(just a curious)will this 'mod' ever void your GPU warranty?
Anyway thanks for the quality content, subbed and liked!
yes temps were always very good! and the warranty is toast with this mod
Love the innovation, looks awesome!! You should consider a GPU waterblock btw
I did think about a water block but most of them are around the same price as the card so I would rather sink that money into an upgrade rather than prolonging the life of the rx580.

@@mikesunboxing Im pretty sure I know why its because I set a fan curve in bios and the fan curve goes off of system temps not the gpu temps so it doesnt ramp up and I dont want the fans to run at a constant fast speed because when its idle i want quietness
Yes I think that is right
@@BastardTraveler what case is it ?
@@mikesunboxing I don't remember the full name but the company is Segotep. Big black case with a window panel on the left side.
I know you did this a while ago, but wouldnt you have not been better controlling the fans from the card its self?
