"How Soon Is Now?" was originally a B-side of the 1984 single "William, It Was Really Nothing". "How Soon Is Now?" was featured on the compilation album Hatful of Hollow and on U.S., Canadian, Australian and Warner UK editions of the group's second album Meat Is Murder released in 1985.
Lyrics
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
There's a club if you'd like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen "now"
Well when exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Almost 40 yrs later and that riff still haunts me. This song is timeless.
They pull your soul and stretch it to its lengths. They’re divinity.
raoufbasit: A certain Buffy haunts me every time I hear this song.
Sighhhhhh
I AM THE SUN
was it not charmed??
It's that damn guitar . . it's haunted me all my life.
it's a beautiful sound, and when i listened to it for the first time in years the nostalgia was stroong
Me too ,BooBoo, me too

Immediate shivers from the beginning
Triggers feelings as strong as a scent.
I am human and I need to be loved, just like everyone does. One of the greatest lyrics ever.
True that!! :)
That lyric hurts me

...but I've already waited too long, and all my hope is gone. (Got married at 36 and had a baby 🍼 at 39. Still hope.)

Ashamed to say this,i only heard this for the first time at work recently.
I physically had to stop what i was doing and stand by the radio.
An absolute masterpiece 👏
Yup. Wow
So many of us had the same reaction to this masterpiece😊
Exactly what we did forty years ago..
Same thing
My first time was from a TV show. I think it was supernatural
Two years ago after his show, I told Johnny Marr "How Soon Is Now?" is my favourite song ever. He kissed my hand and gave me his guitar pick. As a 25 year old, I can't believe the 80's were even real. They seemed too incredible not be fictional.
I hope that in all this years you never washed your hands
Your post needs to live forever.
Dude you just made my day by saying that.......it truly was a magical time of transition with the emergence of hands on technology in it's infancy but filled with room for hope and dreams!!!
The 80's had amazing timbre, but not as good as the 90's.
@@cgleck780 Um. No.
With that opening riff…you just know something magical is about to unfold.
The way it pans is really amazing with modern noise cancelling headphones. Take care.

@@Nex47128yeah tremelo is such a great effect
not chorus@@spaghettisauce445
4-8 fender Twins with their tremelo function manipualted to play off each other in real time as Marr's Casino guitar played back in the studio, the tuning on the second guitar was adjusted to allow for the iconic slide part-two notes or double stops and a Bo Didley Beat. Marr used chorus as did half of the eiighties bands, It's still a cool effecr but it not's why this song sound like this at all.
Marr was using the same guitars, and Boss pedals and studio effects that everyone had access to in the studio then, Nowadays anyone with a laptop has access to hundreds more. Yet this song was a a fookin B SIDE.. He will remain one of the greatest guitarists to ever play the instrument.
Because he could play Bach? No. But he had the technique to play circles around anyone else iin Engand without breaking a sweat,
I play a lot of different styles or rock and country and blues. Playing like Marr is almost always the hardest Refer to my channell. Like Muddy Watters he didn't go to music school, They don't teach what he does with a few chords.
I've seen Moz play this song too and it's great he's an icon but Marr would have been a legend regardless, less famous but a legend, Morrissey.....Marr handed him his career and template on a silver platter, then went on playing like no one else. He doesn't even play like himself here. This Charming Mar is a bit different. As is almost every song musically.
Id been a fan of Rush and Ozzy, The Cure used plenty of chorus. They were cool too. This right here though is a guitar band. Three straight men and one giant gay singing :shut your mouth I want to be loved" After I discovered The Sniths and Rem I barely gave a single shit when Grunge happened. I never saw hundred of apparently straight men rush the stage just embrace a pretentious albeit gifted clealy gay man. Before or since. Three guys behind him all kilin it. Marr was what 19? No peers. Simply because no on else chose the notes he chose. That has nothing to with a chorus pedal. Wish it did.
I'm not really a Smith's fan, but this is one of the best songs ever written
This is the only Smiths song I really liked

"There's a club if you'd like to go,

💕💕💕
I do better with meeting people when I go out alone. Its almost hard to believe. Girls will sit right next to me at an empty bar. I'll be back at it once covid is done. GL buddy.
That's why I didn't go out nights in my twenties, thirties, and now.
Besides, I'd had enough of people after a typical day...
After you've been kicked in the nuts psychologically by enough people, that "wanting to die" feeling goes away somewhat.

Johnny Marr created such a unique sound. What a songwriter, and original guitarist.

That takes courage to admit that we need love just like everybody does
“There’s a club if you’d like to go, you could meet somebody who really loves you. So you go and you stand on your own. And you leave on your own, and you go home and you cry and you want to die.” How can somebody articulate something so heavenly painful?

God, those Johnny Marr's guitar riff are marvellous
Mar wasn't such a good guitarist but he was amazingly creative in the way he took a few amps and effects pedals and used them to get a unique sound that was highly entertaining.
Being a guitarist myself with very limited playing ability I've gotten better response from audiences playing with my band than hard core musicians did playing at the same venue .I made very likable sounds with the guitar that captured people senses.
It not how good the musicians are , it's how well the audience listening , likes it .Kurk Cobain is another example of that . He barely knew how to play guitar . But he was a great entertainer with a very likable sound .
You know...back when I heard this song and those riffs, back in 84, It blew me away and gave me the chills.AMAZING:)
I learnt to play the song in about an hour . And I'm the worst guitarist from canarsie .There are a few different people showing how to play it on RUclips
@@steveh7682 OK try playing william it was really nothing and see if you think he wasn't that skilled
If I liked the song and I wanted to do a cover it may take me a week or so to do it .I listened to it and didn't think much of it . I listened to all the songs I could find on the Smiths and Johnny Marr because I like How Soon Is Now so much . I find it's the only song I like of Marrs and the Smiths.
If Marr wrote the music to that song , he most likely wrote what came natural to him with the style and from what patterns he uses to practice with . Marr may be able to play that song with ease because it's in him . He may have trouble learning what music I have written . It's just repetitious practice
.I'm learning How Soon Is Now because someone I know wants to do a cover of the song when she gigs out . She writes her own material ,both music and lyrics , but feels she want's to do a few covers in between her own stuff. Since she moved here from another town and doesn't have her band anymore I may get to play out as part of her band .I'm old and rusty but there's nothing more I like than playing in a band and gigging out .
Here's the person's own materialwho want's to do a Marr's cover . If ya think it isn't to your liking be easy with criticism.
People get their feelings hurt when people make negative comments of their art .

Daniel you're my favourite post I've read today whether you like it or not
Daniel fountain XD
xD
fuck imagine hearing this song when it came out. it was probably the most original sounding, powerful shit in all of rock at the time. not to mention the lyrics crushed every other band out there. i would have lost it. this would have been my favorite band ever if i had discovered them when i was in middle or high school.
It was. I was the only one amongst my friend's who owned it. It wasn't just cutting edge......it was beyond the edge.
Melissa Dolan - definitely. Was one of the ones that defined my teenage 80's angst ridden existence.
Boogie Loo Same.
i DID hear it when it came out lol
well, no
“I am human and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does” 🤍
charmed opening, 90's kid here
Duuuude the girl I like said she remembers that, I said I heard it in that Netflix movie the killer
Even though I'm an 80s kid 😂
I’m watching Charmed again and came to play this for my husband. Hes never heard it before!
my favorite show of all time!
Vc já está bem velhinho, diga-se de passagem, meu formidable amigo
.....one of the greatest guitar riffs in music history.....
Mark Kalfahs it’s hey monna by bo diddley with more tremelo
This song with headphones is magical
...and without headphones with big boxes and friendly neighbours - too ;-)
So now I'm 54 and all three of My children love this song. I played the hell out of it day and night
Training your children well....keep up the good work.
The eighties songs are Oldies but Goodies now on 101.1 with Scott Shannon. I told my kids born in 78 and 79 lol
Are they the Charmed ones?🥺
I heard this song in 1985 and it has been my favorite song ever since.
The Smiths ruled, they manifested an inward, haunting pathos, one which made all of our feelings of not belonging, alienation or lost, feel like we belonged . . .
that's what music does bruh..
This song fills my heart and the pit of my stomach with a sad, strong and unquenchable desire for the past.
Very much so!
You'll never get the past back, maybe try living to make new better memories.
I feel the same way..
For some reason,I feel like I'm 8 years old and watching a vampire movie..
We are getting old, brother ❤️
Yes
Morrissey and Marr wrote poetry and put it to music... Never ever tire of this, one of the greatest pieces of music ever written...
Iconic song; Iconic video. I remember dancing in clubs in the 80s, staring up at a huge screen watching this...its still as compelling as the day it was released.
This is pure magic...not from this world...I still can recall this feeling ...even after more than 30 years...again and again....thank you so much, Smiths....
Michaela Hansen there were so may great bands in the 80's lik : The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Psycadelic Furs, The Cure, Duran Duran, The Fixx, Talk Talk, Simple Minds, Tears for Fears, The Cult, Echo and the Bunnymen, Billy Idol, OMD, The Concretes....you get the idea ! The 80's ruled ! And this is not a coincidence, all these bands came from the UK....
Anos 80❤️🎧🙋
cocaine is a hell of a drug
"I can still recall this feeling"....mate,you don't have to say anymore.
We all remember that feeling of being an unloved teenager in 1984.
I recently divorced after 32 years, and find myself back here again.
It's like I've come full circle.
Definitely not from this world . Marr has a story about it that proves that point.
JOHNNY MARR'S MOST BRILLIANT RIFF EVER! MORRISSEY'S MOST ANGST RIDDEN LYRICS EVER UTTERED! ONE OF THE PERFECT SONGS OF ALL TIME! I'LL NEVER FORGET WHEN THEY OPENED THEIR 1987 NYC SHOW (PIER 42) WITH THIS SONG! I STILL GET GOOSEBUMPS THINKING ABOUT THAT MOMENT WHEN JOHNNY STARTED THE RIFF AND MORRISSET CAME SAUNTERING OUT ON STAGE.
Marc Domicello great memory. Currently reading Marrs biography, haven't got to the recording of this song yet!
Marc Domicello have you ever listened to I know it's over or asleep?
...and to think their record label didn't want to release the song because they thought it was too Noise.
999klondike lol, I wonder what they think of My Bloody Valentine and Merzbow
This is for the 90's kids that grew up watching charmed and singing the wrong lyrics (I am the sun, I am the air)
Haha right on!! 😂
exactly
Thought it was just me😂
guilty
Omfg I also thought it was just me!!
6.7.24 - still sounds like probably one of the greatest songs in history.
.08.22..2024.
I remember dancing to this song in an alternative goth club in the late 80s. I'd borrowed a friends handcuffs and I had handcuffed my hands behind my back as a lark. I'm pretty tall and there was this shorter guy with a massive mohawk dancing in front of me. Sometimes as we swayed around to this song, I'd get a faceful of stiff, hairsprayed mohawk in my face. I can remember it all crystal clear. Good times.
way ahead of their time; even now
Ken Young but how soon is now?
Days of future have not passed Ken.
that's not the compliment this song deserves, if you think about it.
***** No. I'm saying that calling it ahead of it's time is calling it shite in a way, cuz music now is fucking dreadful and that's why it wouldn't be a compliment. I think it's an excellent song.
***** No. The opposite. I'm saying music nowadays sucks ass.
Even now at 51 still brings it all back
Paul Turner how old?
Hear ya man!
same here and 51 and still loving this song
nearly 50 still love this. so much of how I've felt all my life. it's such a shame and such a waste but got lost on the way!
Me too
Greatest song of all time... never even close to replicated. Masterpiece indeed....This was my growing years and this was my soundtrack,
I was born in 1987 but my dear father was a huge fan of the Smiths and I was raised with their music and Morrissey's. I absolutely love the Smiths. Definitely reminds me of my childhood.😃
I was born in 1973 so just the right age to appreciate The Smiths as soon as they starting banging out the tunes.
The Smiths b sides are better than most bands A sides.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Truth.
It was included on Australian copies of Meat is Murder. Makes the album better, in my opinion.
Cure b sides are also really good
Shakespeares sister is better than this
1:40 this scene of Johnny Marrs teaching Morrissey the chords on the guitar is iconic.....wow
I thought he was Noel Gallagher
One of the great songs of the 80s. The Smiths at their peak.
Right on. Mainstream ain't like this anymore.
BTW get lost nuisance RUclipsr.
Thanks, dude.
I miss the original MTV and the music videos and sad for those who never got to see greatness like this on television. The 80-early 90's, if you were apart of this, then you were blessed like me. Peace.
Long live VH-1 also

Took it for granted back then but then realized I'd go from headbangers ball to 120 minutes to yo mtv raps spending all my free time absorbing music. I genuinely feel bad for people today.
Me too, Boo
This song still stops me dead in my tracks; one of the best I have ever heard.
The Smiths, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. was the music I listened to as a young adult. Man, when this song came on, dozens of us would get up on the dance floor in our over sprayed, spiked hair, leather jackets and fishnets and have the best time EVER. Now at 50, this brings me back to a care free time when music was not mainstream, highly creative (not that there aren't musicians worthy of this now, but not many), and as unique as the 870's and early 90's.
Sand93952 aj hahahaha

@@znyznyzny Weren't you around back then? ;)
Timeless classics!! Relevant today.
“So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home and you cry and you want to die”
Yup.
My 20s in song
Best lyrics ever
This particular lyric resonates with so many people . The phrase is so simple, yet so accurate, for a lot of us out there , amazing ! :)
Theres a club that you like to go
my exact experience in clubs
We loved the 80s music, we visited local new wave clubs and we enjoyed all that 80s music era had to offer, the best era in music. The Smiths was one of them and we loved them. A few years back, I am driving my daughter to the airport and she goes, do you mind if I play something that I really like, so I said of course. She played this song by the Smiths. I go, wow, the Smiths. She responded asking how do I know the Smiths, but my question was, how does she? Amazing and timeless music and she was completely unaware of me knowing about them and loved the music, because it is great music.
Love This!! ❤️ 😍 💖
That riff is still iconic and has never been close to duplicated. Amazing. Gives chills just thinking back to that sound of the 80s 💯
Over 40 years.haunting perfection. Period
When I first heard this song (mid 80s) it entranced me. I taped it off
the radio and would play it regularly when I was alone. This was a quite
a big deal for me as I was a rocker...long hair and into Metallica,
Megadeth, etc. Beck then I knew it was a special song but I couldn't
have told you why.
Now I know...it captured the time perfectly. When I hear it, no matter
where I am, I get transported to my teenage years during the 80s...high
school, my friends, my girlfriends, how simple and innocent it all
seemed back then.
I will always love this song...every time I hear it it makes me feel
good.
A lot of heavier bands absolutely love The Smiths. They captured something so dark, unique yet melodic that you can't help but love it.
Great share. Love this song. I have to listen to it the whole way through every time 👌🏾
@Imix Muan I'm not a rocker, but if you put the Smiths next to Metallica... that sounds like a big deal
I'm a metal head it's my it's my go to
IRON
MAIDEN is my favorite band of all time but I absolutely love New Wave-Freestyle-bubble gum is my guilty pleasure
If you like that give placebos version of kate bush running up the hill, haunting is all i can sayl.
This is one of the best songs ever made.
I was in college in the early 90s, and I think that it was mandatory for this song to be played at every house party.
LOL mandatory at my university bars so that everyone could dance like Morrissey
Really?
I very much doubt that
@@zochbuppet448 this song was sooooo popular back then. How can u highly doubt that?
@@Hex_StevesPlayth1ng Only people who were into post punk and music from the UK or very alternative music in the 80s would of listen to this.
It would never of been played at ever house party because most people were into shitty music
Shitty music at the time include all types of mainstream music including cheesy metal ,Guns and Roses and later crap like Korn, Slipnot, and shitty mainstream grunge
My roommate in college introduced me to the Smiths and many other great 'progressive' bands at the time. I was very lucky. Forever great memories.
Everyone in the comments agrees that this is one of the greatest songs of 80's, me included. But there's one more thing: this video clip is also a masterpiece!
Morrisey and the Smiths in general hated the video apparently, and tried to stop it from being released. It was their label’s fabricated attempt at trying to reach the US audience and MTV in general - starting with their insistence that a successful vid needed a pretty girl etc.
Reminds me of an animation class I took in college. Love the repetitive imagery.
It was made by Sire ... the Smith's American company as they had no video for it ... the Smith's hated it.
Turned up loud, windows down, back road, full moon, vibe. Love this song so much! 🖤
Hello I am so sorry if this sounds weirds but you wrote such a nice and wonderful comment on here and I like your comment. I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you I'd love to be friends
Especially the end that guitar riff
Love that riff til the day I die. So haunting and foreboding. Like descending down the rabbit hole of loneliness. Beautiful 😌
I love all the comments on here. I can't believe how fast time has flown. Didn't this just come out yesterday...?
