    Thank you, Caitlin. I always come away from watching your videos with new skills to try and apply. Your thorough walking us through your processes, mistakes, and fixes (without the latest and greatest tools) really is a powerful teaching method.

      Thanks! The curved top was the part I was most nervous about making, so needless to say when I got both these bends done I was very happy.

      I don't really calculate hours just because I am usually working on more then one thing at once, so it's hard to add up. Plus, this has been a long term project. I think my first footage is from the beginning of the summer. But, yes this one has be time consuming.

    Very neat process, definitely it does take a lot of work to steam bend woods, especially hard dense woods. Effort paid off nicely. Thank you for sharing your process. So much planning for this project. Everyone stay safe, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia

    Awesome job steam bending. I’ve got all the things to make a steam chamber and I’m going to make it. I’ve got a chair project to try it on. If it doesn’t work it will be thin strips glued in a form.

    • @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
      @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks  Год назад

      My first big steaming project was a chair. I had to bend 2 inch square oak for the legs. Had two failures on that one. And that was with using green, quarter sawn oak. But, bending thicker lumber is a whole new ballgame verus this 1/4 -5/16 inch stuff in this video.

    Looking Good!!! I never steam bent before. However, I would like to give it a try. I like the idea of using 8 inch vent pipe for the box.

      Thicker pieces get more difficult, but you can do some really cool things with thinner boards and little failures.

    Another great video, the amount of time spent making forms and the fact that the forms are normally scrap afterwards because like you said the chances of needing that exact bend again is near zero makes the cost of something like this prohibitive in most cases, but it is great to see the process again and once again I feel the need to try this 🙄, not sure on what but you never know something might come along 👌👌👌👍👍👍🇦🇺

    • @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
      @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks  Год назад

      Yeah one off bends are just kinda depressing with amount of work that won't be used again. I think where steam bending really excels is someone making repetitive bends like chairs and lamp shades. Then the utility of the forms and bending strap outweighs the effort to make it ten fold.

  • @scottmcfarland1177

    You need about 10 hands when bending wood! Nice bending job! That's the down side of building a one of that requires a special jig a lot of work and material that only gets used once! Really looking good!

    • @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
      @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks  Год назад

      I know all these jigs/forms are already taken apart, and the hardware stored for later use. The rest is in the trash pile. I hate the waste of it, but I just don't have the space to store stuff like this.

    I've really enjoyed watching the progress of this project. That was some good bending going on, I always thought wood bending would've used higher cost tools (based on how I've seen it done in other videos), glad to see it doesn't. As someone starting to get into hand planes I do envy your skill with those...just a little...

      I think like most things in woodworker you can do it the Ferrari way, the Toyota way, or the Kia way. They all usually work, but the ride is all a little different. I always aim for decent quality tools that garner a solid end result without breaking the bank.

    Good information! I've wanted o try this, just never had the need. I've built arched topped door openings, but it was interior paint grade and my trim supplier got me some flexible trim. Made it simple and fast. But that was new construction piece work. Must different than what you are building. Great work!! Looks awesome!!

    I hope you're making a ton of money, you're working so hard. I spent a life time doing things like this and you always fall into the trap of thinking you can build it faster then you really can. Great work.

    • @HoneyBadgerWoodWorks

      I was smart on this one and over estimated, because I also think it will be easier/faster than it ever is. So the price I thought was originally too high is turning out to be just right.
