Horseshoeing - Why a horse might only need front shoes

- Today, I am putting front shoes on a horse that is used mainly for mounted shooting. In this video, I explain what I am doing and the decisions that have to be made in order to get this horse shod. If you have any questions that I do not answer in the video, let me know in the comments. Also, if you have any burning questions about shoeing horses, let me know and I'll do the best I can to answer them in a future video. I also trimmed the back feet on this horse which I did not include in this video. Putting shoes on a horse does not hurt the animal when done properly.

Some people say they listen to Sean Connery, Sam Elliott or Morgan Freeman to soothe them to sleep, but me....nah, I just turn on S&S. I've watched every video multiple times and I've even convinced a handful of other folks to watch. This is my go-to channel when I need to decompress from a long day or a stressful situation. Good video. I've never had a Farrier pick up his nails, so with that and beating at least one horse every time they come and then never showing up the day the promised I do all my own horses now. I appreciate you explaining what and why you are doing it.

worked a s a groom at Belmont Park in L.I. N.Y. in the early 70s our blacksmith would always pick up after himself. I always respected people that did good work.

Once had a guy leave his nail tips behind and my mule managed to get one stuck in her frog.
Trying to get it out gave me a taste of what it feels like to try and defuse a bomb.

@@feathersong5838 The part of Washington I lived in is really rocky and the dirt packs easily. We assume this is how it managed to get up there.
We don't hold anything against the guy, doubt he did it to cause any harm. My girl is just heavy and stuff gets PACKED in her feet.
A guy that was showing me some basic shoeing told to always pick up the nails for that exact reason. Slim chance, but apparently not slim enough to leave it be

That horse was a CUTIEEEE. So calm and well behaved. At one point though at the beginning he looked at you like “we going to shoe today bro?” And I died of laughter a little. I want a horse so bad but I’m waiting until post Covid restrictions because it’s a bit of a pain in the ass right now to get all I need done done in my state.
Any professional leaves his workspace better than he found it.

Love how you pick your nails up, drives me insane when a farrier just drops them because our hallway is shavings and finding a nail in that is awful! And the last thing I want is one getting stuck in a hoof

Dear Mr. S&S ...trimming back the amount of hoof front or frog you deem necessary is you being efficient or in other words...doing a good job! Your mother raised some good boys and you are somewhat exceptional because you also do vet school so your no Sunday driver! I watch things and people I respect and my standards are really quite high in some aspects...DO WHAT YOU FEEL AND MAKE IT REAL😇
Well, you don't want your customer to run over bits of nail with their equipment and have tires go flat. You also don't want a horse or animal to step on it and get hurt.

Why the owner could not put the horse on dry ground for you Sheldon, is beyond me. Seems like they don't think very highly of the amazing, professional service you provide. We're I to own a horse now, (I had a Quater horse many years ago) and have you as my Farrier, I would make sure your comfort was top of my list. I'd also bring you your favorite beverage and any special sweets you might like, and I'd never leave you out in the cold. I hope you and your family are well and that vet school is just about finished. Looking forward to more videos

When I had a Tennessee Walker, I use to only put front lite shod shoes on him so he’d pick up his feet a little bit. Without his front shoes, he would just be off, a bit lazy, and drag his feet, which caused him to trip more than usual. Didn’t help that he was naturally a little clumsy lol
first time seeing someone shoeing a horse! had to keep reminding myself that he most likely knows what he’s doing and not hurting the horse...very interesting tho, watched like 3 videos in a row

I take care of people (RN) from head to toe. I’m really digging the autonomy you have as a farrier. The horses in the videos I have seen so far are very well behaved and cooperative for the most part. Do you think you could ask them to teach manners to my patients? I've seen them get their bellies ripped open by nails sticking out of the shoe. Horses can hurt you in a sec......especially if you're not paying attention to what is going on around you.

As someone that doesn't know anything about horses, I wanted to say I greatly enjoyed the video. Your video on the topic of shoeing a horse is concise and educational. I'm interested to see more informative videos. Is there any difference in reasons or procedure between shoeing a working horse vs a race horse vs a pet horse? Or is it all mostly the same?
blackmooncult x depends. Racehorses *normally* only get normal shoes, some ranch horses, Eventing horses, and horses on slippery ground get shoes you’re able to put Studs into. Most just pet horses that are naturally sound can go barefoot. Unless it’s only a pasture pet for a reason

So I know that this doesn’t really hurt the horses, same with cleaning, but what could you do that would hurt the horse?
You could cut too deep. Just like with a finger nail you could cut too far. Another thing that could happen is that the nail could take an incorrect path and go into the live part of the foot. This would be like getting a splinter underneath your finger nail.
I would have definitely hit my hand trying to get the shoe perfect 😅
How do horses legs deal with walking in deep snow or ice cold water? Or do you need to avoid stuff like that or what?

So what would happen if the horse doesn't want anyone near their feet?
Nathan Carmichael it would kick them, but horses really like standing and chewing so they usually wouldn’t care about what the person was doing as long as they weren’t bothering the horse, for example if he started trying to pull the horse’s leg a certain way it didn’t like it would totally just kick the shit out of him

They would tie their front and back legs so that they couldn't extend them.
Some horses when the don't want there feet trimmed or shod will kick some will break loose and rear I recently got a horse and it makes him very nervous and break into a sweat

I have a 23 year old mare with seedy toe, seperates at the toe. Better to stay barefoot or shoe the front? I do shoe her when we trail ride. thanks good videos.
The rear hooves have all the power.... So, essentially, horses are rear wheel drive, got it.

My parents had a little quarter horse mare, and she NEEDED front shoes. She was soo flat footed, and had soft sole. She couldn't walk without them. 365 days a year.

my mare is a barrel horse. we do games and barrel racing, trail riding, swimming, bareback, etc. right now she has front shoes on but would it be better to have all fours? or just keep the fronts? she has had all 4 before we bought her but we’ve only had the fronts on for now..
Will front shoes only help level out a rump high horse?
I have a question : Could shoes correct how your horse walk or can they stay barefoot ?? I have an Arab who stands and walks with his feet pointing out words .Can this be correct by shoes or shaping his feet or is thing something which is just how he walks ?
From my experience, better not play with confirmation. Thats the way he is.

May i ask a probably dumb question? I remember seeing horseshoeing in TV as a Child (and never had anything personally to do with horses), and each and every time they brought the horseshoe up to glowing red to fit it. You are doing them "cold". I could imagine that the difference is in the detail prepairing of the hoof, so that with the glowing one you see more easy where you still have to remove material of the hoof and the horseshoe being easier to form. And you on the other hand might not need the time and stuff for the heating process. But is that the case?
If I paid some one to do a job and they did not clean up behind them selves I would never call them back again.
I agree with the comment about your voice. Anyway, had this horse worn shoes before? I'm amazed that you go up to a horse and it let's you do this to them. I understand it doesn't hurt them but do they know you aren't going to hurt them? For the most part they just let you do what you need to do.
You get the horse used to touching and picking up their feet from a young age, that's why they usually are calm when done these sorts of things to. There is of course horses thay don't like their legs being touched but you just gotta keep being consistent and yeah. Hope I answered your question well enough :)
Sir, I have a question about flexing. How can the horse's hoof flex with a shoe on it?
It does hinder it. But it still can flex. Which can be good or bad depending on what you are trying to accomplish.
Sorry if you've answered this before in another video, but I'm curious! I have absolutely no horse experience, so I'm looking at this video and I see the shoe has holes for four nails on each side, but you only put three nails in. Is there a reason for that or is it kind of just preference?
6 or 7 nails is the norm. The extra holes in the shoe are so the farrier has a choice where to put them.

Horses weight carry on the front legs, all the power comes from the back legs, that's why the hooves are a different shape.

I wouldn’t shoe a horse in mud and crap like that . Clearly the owner don’t care about farrier or job . They just want shoes on however it happens . I bet the owner has had many farriers walk away .
have you lived in WA?? I was on San Juan Island for 27 years and "dry land" was hard to find for about 6-8 months of the year.
