Stop Popping Hips During Leg Lifts

- Let's talk about that annoying popping that you get when you do leg lifts. Have you ever experienced that? Maybe you're doing hanging leg lifts at the gym, or you're doing leg lifts on the floor and you’re like, "Why am I getting this annoying popping in my hip or back in my SI joint?"
I see this all the time, and it can be a few different causes, but one of the main reasons that I see this is a little bit of instability. Basically, you get a little wobbly when you go to do the exercise. You end up with a tendon popping, usually over a bursa sac.
Now let's dig a little bit deeper and talk about what we might be able to do to stop that.

Glad to know I am not alone! Thanks for sharing! I will try that adjustment later (: hope it works
Wow, a minute and 30 seconds fixed an issue I've had for years. Thank you so much 😭
Hurray!
Damn, lifted that rib and back popping said, “Look for me with a 🔦 “ 🤣
Thank you so much
“Look at the other side of the rib cage” I thought hmm never thought of that. I have had my hip pop for 3 years.. instant fix. You have no idea how helpful that was.
Yay! Glad you found it helpful :)
Had this issue for years, tried securing the ribs in place and worked straight away with no pops!!
Yay!!
The right side of my back has popped like for literally as long as I can remember and this has helped at least temporarily!!
yay!
Saw this video and was like 'Hey! That's me! I have that!' Great information and enthusiasm, you're adorable
Glad you liked the video!
I just did what you talked about!! making sure my ribs were pulled in and down and keeping my lower back touching the floor and I was able to do a bicycle crunch with leg extension WITHOUT ANY lower back popping!!! Thank you so much for you dilligence in your craft and making this information free and accessible to all. Your clear teaching and instruction and exercises have changed my life literally and you have been a part of my postpartum journey. Thank you!!
This was so helpful. I have a client who’s left legs always pops when we do front leg raises. We tried your advice yesterday(stabilizing the ribs) and it worked!!!!!! Thank you so much
Yay, so glad it helped!!
Lady I have dealt with this popping back BS for years now and I’m about to join the army and you litterally made the popping stop with a short video, you are my hero
Just got here to say like many others thank you!! This was so simple... Turns out I do have the strength to keep my core tight enough to not pop 😍 it's never been painful for me, but it just feels freaky and like I'll ruin my leg, so, thank you again!
You are so welcome!
I cant believe this actually worked so well. My hips have popped for years while doing ab/leg raising exersises and doing what you said- tightening my core and making sure my ribs arent flaring during the exersises completely stopped the popping. Thank you so much!
Yay!! Love when it is a simple fix :)
You are a wizard. I’ve had this deep popping on lying leg lifts JUST ON MY LEFT SIDE. Tucked my right rib down and across to my left hip and it stopped popping and pops less. Wow!!! Thank you!
Hurray!
Thank you so much!!! I've started exercising recently, and loved leg lifts, bent knee raises, all of those. but I had to avoid them because the popping was unbearable! I thought the issue was me, that I was overweight, or that I didn't get enough activity, which lead me to hate myself. turns out it was as simple as me not holding myself in place!! thank you!
You are so welcome!
It is very alarming when this happens to you. Even more alarming that conventional health professionals seem incapable of explaining what is going on. Really good explanation of the background causes of those pops and clunks. I found that tracking both legs for the same amount of times, eventually realigned the femur with pelvis. Still needed to strengthen and engage the other muscles in that area, so that their imbalance was corrected.
This is actually REALLY helpful because like I actually really started to think that like I had like arthritis in my hip or something because when ever I did leg lifts my hip was making a bunch of poping noises and other people around me were also able to hear it so yeah this really helped!!!!
Yay!
when i do leg lifts on my back, my left side pops in a weird place-- it feels like it's more in my back than my hip. when i lower the leg parallel to the ground and straighten it out, i feel and hear the pop. no pain, just like a shift or pop. happens when i extend/lower just the left leg, or both legs at once. the left side always pops. again, towards my lower back/tailbone area.
Possibly an SI joint
same exact problem!
Same problem but with right leg.
Same problem but with right leg.
@@dipeshbhatta3135 same with me
This fixed the popping almost instantly! Thank you!
Thank you! I have had this hip popping for years, and after watching this I can finally do leg raises without hearing the pop.
Hurray! That's awesome!
Underrated channel. Good cues as always.
🥰
For years I’ve done leg lifts and been so annoyed that my hips would pop with every lift. After watching this video I finally realized I wasn’t focusing on my upper body so I was leaning and making my body unaligned, so after focusing on keeping both sides my ribs, lower back, and pelvic bone on the ground, I stopped rotating so much and now I don’t get the popping anymore!!! Thank you so much!!
Holy schnitzels thank you! This has been one of my greatest pet peeves of working out and now I can finally resolve it!
Yay! So glad it helped :)
Amazing, had the hip popping for years just thought it was only me, the first exercise you showed on this video fix it for me, great thanks xxx
You are so welcome!
first time I have done a leg raise with my right leg without a popping noise in a couple of years... thanks!
Yay!
Just saw this. high schooler year who actually quit ab excersies bc of this sensation. It doesn't make a loud popping noise for me, but it does make joints slightly rubbing against each other out of place. Hopefully these help!
thank you so much ma’am. i would resent how, during PT, my instructor would make us do leg raises and after every rep i would feel and hear that very annoying popping in the right hand area of my hips. after watching the first minute and a half of this video i went on the floor to try the secured ribs technique thing and now theres absolutely no popping anymore. god bless
Amazing!!!
Oh my word!!! This video is a life savior! ☺️
Thanks for the tips! Remembering to keep my core engaged helped. I was feeling weird cuz it only happened deep in my left hip when dropping my left leg down slowly. I thought it was weakness, but going up was easy. I realized that my abs were super loose, so I tensed my core a bit and that helped! Maybe there’s some inner muscle weakness at play here, like you said!
Great investigative work!
Oh my goodness. It worked!!! But my back hurts lolol but it works omg. I can finally do youtube ab workouts!
Thanks! I'll come back when the popping comes back!
If your back hurts you may be using your back muscles instead of your abs for the workout.
Could you tell which streaching exercise you did?
this is a really important video, can't find any other on the subject ; thank you so much! could you go a little more in-depth with regards to clunking in the lower back/SI Joint? could it be the iliopsoas rubbing over something(?) cause it's too tight (similar to how the iliopsoas rubs against the iliopectineal bursa in snapping hip syndrome), and hence requires a little stretching?
Great question! I will add it to my list of videos to make :)
Entire life, ballet, pilates, modern dance my left hip pops, I've asked teachers and physicians why and no one could give me an answer. I will try repositioning, BTW , The popping has gotten worse as I've aged.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
first tip worked for me :)
yay!!!
Pls help what did you do? I don't understand what to do😕
Hmm, this fixed it. I guess I just always lift my leg a little twisted. But once I tried to maintain my leg straight while doing leg lifts the popping stopped. Thank you!!
The very first adjustment worked for me! THANK YOU!
Thanks, just found out the pop stops if my lower abs are contracted enough.
Subbed just because of that video. My back clicks since I started to workout seriously like 4 years. Thank you for helping me figure IT out.
Omg ty so much!! I held my ribs and sure enough, the popping in my si joint stopped. Great video!!
Yay!!
Thank you! This is the best explanation and advice I have ever received about this issue. I will start implementing it today.
yay! I am so glad it was helpful!
Best video I’ve found on the subject!
Glad you found it helpful!!
I am a hobby triathlete. I only found my way to the sport three years ago and since then competed in a a couple of half-distance tris. I'm not a natural born runner, but I have been steadily improving on the run and finished my first marathon last fall as well. For the past three months or so I have been struggling with an annoying injury that is keeping me from putting in the work. As far as I can tell it was not brought on by any specific activity (e.g. very long run or high volume week) or any accident.
In short, after runs I feel pain in my left hip. I feel the pain both in my groin area and where the femur head inserts into the hip socket at the lower end of my glute. And the pain gets way stronger when I bend forward with straight legs (or if I lie on my back and lift my straight left leg). In addition, I also started getting pain in my abs after longer runs.
The only clear asymmetry I notice (which I suspect is the underlying cause) is a popping/cracking sound I feel (and hear?) in my lower left back near the SI joint when I move my leg in certain ways. In particular side-leg lifts or hurdle-moves. With every rotation or leg lift there is either a single or a double pop I feel in my lower back.
I stretch/do yoga daily (often for about an hour) now with focus on the hip and legs. I incorporate the exercises from the Myrtle Routine, as well as other exercises supposedly designed to increase hip strength, flexibility, and/or stability. Often the stretching gives some relief, but it never deals with the underlying issue.
I was struck by your explanation in the second half of the video around popping/cracking in the lower back. Both because you describe it as 'clunking' which really seems spot on, but also because of the connection to the abs.
I have two questions: 1) Have you come across folks that get similar pain in the groin and abs after running that could be related to the popping/cracking/clunking in the lower back? 2) Is core strengthening the only thing that you know will help to combat the popping/cracking/clunking in the lower back?
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. Best... mario
Oh, those are good questions. Unfortunately, I can't really answer them without an assessment. But, yes, the pain in those areas could be related to the same weakness that's causing the clunking. Core strengthening is not the only thing there is to do, but it can be a good starting point.
Best video ever concerning this topic ! Thanks a lot for your contribution. Keep up the great work !
Thank you so much!
Wow!!! Out of al the videos I watched in the subject yours was the one that helped me. God bless you!
Thank you. It helps with my back popping!
Could you please describe more, in simple layman terms, what to do if you experience popping in your lower back during leg lifts? 2:47
The video provides a diagnosis in technical terms but doesn't give simple explanation of how to do the leg lifts to avoid this, how to strengthen the muscles that need strengthening to avoid the problem. Thanks.

I get that popping when doing leg raises. I've had about 5 years of bad knees and just had my second arthroscopic surgery on my second knee so I lost some muscle. Now I'm building my legs back up and it pops less. Which is great....my wife said she thinks it sounds like my hip is dislocating. I know it's not, my physio said what you said.
Wow thank you so much this is really helpful
So I have this problem in both of my hips, though the left is and has always been way worse.
What can be done if you’re already doing these suggestions but it’s still happening?
My coaches will usually have me do Dead Bug Reaches (without a raised head because of an old neck injury) in place of Planks since I have a really bad Diastasis but doing the Dead Bugs are super annoying because I pop really bad (especially on the left) with every reach.
Hard to say without seeing you - its possible that one side of your pelvis is in an APT - more than the other one and that your femur needs to move back in the socket - you can also check out this link to find someone near you that has taken the PCES course - www.coreexercisesolutions.com/pces-graduate-map/
Thanks for the video, super useful
Thank you sooo much I thought I needed to see a doc but you are a miracle. I was just working through it for the longest time lol it aches a little after multiple sets but this would explain that too
Great realizations!
Thanks a lot, it really helped with legs lifts, but i still have the same problem on both sides whenever i do side crunches, I can’t do them any more, it’s not really painful, but it is so annoying and uncomfortable, i don’t want to risk it.

Wow. Thank you.
That actually worked 😳
I stop it by putting my hand under my butt
My back pops when I’m lying on the back and pedaling in the air
Wow, it works! Thank you so much! 💗
Glad I could help!!
Hi, I also experience the same but my main concern is it hurts. Whenever I raise my left leg, the pain starts when I lower it down with the pop. I had to stop exercising my lower abs because of the pain which frustrates me. I'm afraid its gonna affect my workout routine in the long run if I don't recover from this 😔 Is this fixable?
It sounds like you need to find someone to help figure out what is causing the pain so you know how to work on it and stop that from happening.
It's kinda same for me but it doesn't hurt that much for now. Did you fix this issue and how ?
@@dipeshbhatta3135 yeah it has gone over time though I still feel it sometimes. I avoided strenuous training for a while and exercises that involves lifting the leg. Now whenever I feel pain, its bearable.
@@lutheran1914 I'm kinda worried it'll be a huge problem when I'm older. I can't even train my abs because of this.
@@dipeshbhatta3135 that's my main concern. I slowly tried going back to those exercises after a long break. I saw a big difference but as I said before, I still feel pain at times. What I do in that situation is, when my left leg is lift up (that's the side that's in pain) when I release it down, I internally rotate my leg and then I slowly put it back down. That way I don't feel any pain or hear any popping of the muscle.
Same here popping when i lift my left leg for years
Omg I was looking for this!!!!
So if I'm standing up straight and I lift my right leg straight to the right and there's a popping noise on the downward motion of my leg coming back down what does that mean?
Could be several things, without an assessment I couldn't tell you for sure.
Same happens with me
I have been having this problem for awhile. I tried stabilizing my ribs. I am not sure if I did not do stabilize them correctly, or if my core just isn’t strong enough to do these exercises yet. I am just glad I understand what is happening. Thanks! Please reply
It could be either. If you feel like your core is weak then that might be a clue for you to work on core strength.
Okay thank you!
I didn't even realize the super small movement I was doing caused the popping. Once I was able to do it only moving my legs, it worked just fine 😁
Great work being aware of the small movements!
Shifted my weight and it stopped; fixed.
when i do standing cross leg raises my hips or the side of my butt makes loud poping noises
Did you try to tip in the video while standing?
Instantly stopped you're amazing

Sometimes I feel a pain in the groin when I am on my back and lift my right leg.
Finding someone in person to work with you can be a great place to start!

I always thought popping was from hip impingement...? I get groin pain as well - could it only be the tendon problems you mention?
Hard to say about the groin pain for sure without seeing you move. Have you been to a physical therapist to see for sure?
so i tried doing this and i realized, i can really feel and hear the pop when im sitting up and my legs are in the air angled, and I lower my back and straighten out my legs at the same time( for ab exercises) , i can feel/hear the pop. What do you think I should do??
Try keeping your back on the floor and doing them like I do in the video and seeing if you can do them without the popping with my suggestions.
Great video. I have one question which is for a similar exercise. When doing the dead bug exercise I get a clicking/popping in my left lower back when I lower the right leg. I am embracing my core as best I can and there is no pain. Is it something that will go away as maybe my core gets stronger? It is a little strange that it only happens on one side.
I would have to see you move to know for sure what is going on but is your ribcage staying down and connected (like I talk about in this video) while your leg is lowering? Take a video of yourself doing the exercise and watch it back. That can be very helpful to see what is going on!
Mine are cracking, the left one grinds like hell if I bend the knee and try to circle it's a sound from a nightmare. I had them x-rayed MRIed and they are perfectly healthy hips.. I don't know why they still make the noise🥲🤷🏻♂️
how do I know if i have spondylolistesis when popping in the lower back?
This is something you will need to check with your care provider.
Hi!! Thank you for this video. I was wondering (personally i only get the popping noises when i do leg raises) and it never is painful. Does it also mean I should give my abs a break of working out? (Like even upper abs and all) or i can keep doing other abs exercises? I do stretches and stuff to help with the hip flexors but, it’s not much help. Thank you!
I would have to see you move to know for sure what you should be working on. Have you ever tried my Happy Hips Challenge? It may help with your hip flexors www.coreexercisesolutions.com/happy-hips-challenge/
Thanks I will definitely give it a try! ❤️
Interesting! What about popping with external rotation? On the back. Knees bent and circle knee externally, and I get a pop. Or standing and doing knee circles externally.
Yes, that happens. We can get ligaments or muscles popping all over the place. It could be your glute tendon or SI joint popping.
Popping hips means clicking sound from the hips?
Yes!
Pt says it’s normal though
does anybody else just get it really badly when they're in an upper plank (on your hands, not elbows) when you bring one of your feet up to the side of both of your hands? My left leg can come up and to the side of my wrists fine, but with my right leg i get maybe 3/4 of the way up and it just clonks like mad..
The same principle applies. Are your pelvis and ribcage staying connected or when you move your leg or are things moving and becoming disconnected? Video yourself doing the move and you might be able to see what is going on!
I can’t hear what you’re saying clearly in the video. if u get a clunking in your back, what does this mean please? Thanks
Try out the exercise and see how it feels - do you feel a "pop" or your hip just not moving smoothly when you do the exercise?
@@CoreExerciseSolutions hi, it sounds like a crack when I do hanging leg raises in the gym. I’ve had bad back pain for almost a year, and wondering if this is symptomatic of something else?
Great video! I am able to keep them from popping if I engage my ribs and do one leg lift at a time. However when I do both they still pop. Should I just do single leg lifts for now?
Yes. It sounds like once you try to lift both legs maybe it is too much at the moment and something is not staying engaged properly. Keep working and I bet you will get there!
i dont understand english well, so can anyone tell me here what should i do to stop it? please, its so iritating while im doing workout or sometimes when i move my leg (hope there is not much mistakes)
Make sure your ribs on the opposite side of the leg you are raising/lowering are staying down. Does that make sense?
@@CoreExerciseSolutions yes, thank you so much
@@CoreExerciseSolutions if it doesn't what do I do?
Hi, I have been suffering low back pain for 4 years and have managed to keep doing very physical work with the help of side planks. Planks then stopped helping so tried pigeon pose which worked for a few months. No they don't work. I get the clicking on left side of lower back.
Do you think strengthening abs would help?
Have you watched this video that goes through things that can cause SI joint pain (your description makes it sound like an SI joint could be clicking possibly?)? Maybe you could get some clues from this video to determine the next best steps. ruclips.net/video/jPtCA0Qb-hc/видео.html
Thanks for replying. I will check that out now. I went to a chiropractor once and he said it's my si joint.
There is popping sound from my lower back while i move my right leg. Any suggestions?
Is it an SI joint possibly? I would need to see you move to be able to tell for sure and give you suggestions.

Hey thanks for the video. When I lie on my back and do leg lifts just under my hips pop. It isn’t painful but it’s not comfortable. Do you think there’s anything I can do about it?
Is it your SI joint popping?
What kinds of workouts should I do to build more stability. I would say that I work out my abs a lot, but whenever I do leg lifts on the ground my lower back pops.
Having strong glutes and hip muscles are necessary for pelvic stability. Also making sure you are strengthening your abs in an even way would be great places to start.
I'm not quite understanding what I should do to fix this? The popping only happens in my left leg and I have no idea how to fix this please help

Every time I do plie's my left hip aches soooo bad afterwards. I don't hear popping when doing them but I hear popping if I do any kind of lifting my left leg.
Check out some of the deep hip rotator videos I have posted recently. I wonder if your hip joint is forward in the socket and then the plie shoves it more forward. The videos should help you troubleshoot and see if that might be the issue.
My left hip would pop when doing leg extensions, by engaging my core it stopped the popping! However in certain movements it heels like a muscle along the putside of my left leg can ache momentarily. Would this indicate the same muscle tightness/instability or would it most likely be arthritis/bursitis
I am guessing its some tightness.
Instructions unclear, both hips are popping now

I get it when I “march on the spot”. Like the action during high knees, its louder the more I tilt my knee outwards, which part of my body may be causing that?
High knees in standing? Try to stand taller and make sure that your rib cage is stacked over your pelvis and see if that changes anything.
When lift my right while left leg is on the ground, my lower back on left side pops.
OR
if i twist my lower back while laying down on the bed, it pops too.
Is it not normal? And can it be fixed??
No that is not normal. It can probably be fixed. I would go see a physical therapist to can evaluate the way you move in person to see what is going on and how to correct it. :)
It's does small pop inside but it doesn't hurt so far.
So is it harmful? And can it permanently fixed?
@@Blue_Tsuki It is hard to say exactly what is going on without seeing you. Seeing an in person PT would be best because they can evaluate you and see exactly what is going on.
Alright thank you, i just wanted to know it is harmful or not? And that could it be fixed.
If whenever i raise my left leg like a leg raise, i would feel a small pop sound.
Can anyone explain to me the solution please because i didn't get it
It can vary depending on the person! - Try working through what I demo in the video and see what you can come up with! Often it can be due to a rib flare or your pelvis shifting as you lift a leg.
Is it possible that I am standing on one leg more than the other?
maybe!
When ever I do leg raises the from off like my hip it pops and it hurt and just wanna do my damn about workout
Did you try the tip in the video?
When i run i get this, really sucks.
Sorry you are dealing with that!
It doesn't hurt when I do this exercise but pop, can I still continue doing it?
Up to you - if there is a pop there is some instability in your pelvis that would be good to address.
Hi! I have a question, whenever I do bicycle crunches or cross crunches there is a slight silent pop in my upper left thigh and it’s kinda painful when I try to do these movements, I have been warming up and cooling down so I’m not sure how this happened, it all started yesterday and I have no idea what it could be. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do to fix this 😭 thank you 😢
Not really, I'd need to see you move first. I don't think a warm up and cool down necessarily means you're using the right movement patterns. warmups just help to keep you safe from straining something due to cold muscles, unless the warm up is very specific to certain muscles you'd like to promote activation in.
Started stretching every morning and I get a deep popping in my lower back when doing scissor kicks, can’t get it to stop. Doesn’t hurt tho
