I was a 11 years old watching India playing Australia at Corporation Stadium, Madras in 1960 January. India won the second test at Kanpur and so there was a huge crowd present for the fourth test. R B Desai about 5ft 3inches in height opened the bowling with G S Ramchand. Desai got 4 wickets...three of them bowled. The three were Neil Harvey, Norman O'Neill and Peter Burge batting at no 3,4 and5 .All 3 were well established batsmen Burge's stump went cartwheeling . I remember vividly. Desai later played in Madras representing ACC in the Buchi Babu tournament

Ramakant Ji's figures for Cricket Club of India vs West Indians match are 36 overs 5 balls 128 runs 8 wickets (23-25 November 1958). First Test began on 28/11/1958. He was considered after West Indies were leading the 5 Test series 3-0 after 4 Tests.
Gavaska, Tendulkar, Parkar and Ramakant, little and tiny but talented cricketers are from Central Bombay. Amazing to watch them playing cricket on various grounds.
Surendra Nath was an able second fast bowler and could have supported Desai. But our wise selection committee somehow chose only one new ball bowler. There was Rusi Surti also
I had the privilege to be his disciple and honour to be under his tutlege. I had faced his swing bowling. No parallel to him today. Salute my lord. I miss you and respect you.
Wish you at least mentioned once KARSAN GHAVRI who was India's second fast bowler with more wickets at better strike rate than Desai. Also he was the first Indian fast bowler to take 100 test wickets.
If there is a history like this why haven't anyone learned form the mistakes yet....? Still play on flat tracks, still everyone in India wants to be a batsman or a spin bowler.... If a good fast bowler comes along (Bumra) everyone rely on him so much that he don't get time to recover after a series or a couple of series .... History repeating itself and all are ignorant about it.
@@advocatepankajdesai Yes very short, do you remember बुधी कुंदरण who had no place in the test side but he was included in the test and this stylish wicketkeeper blasted 182 runs against the same इंग्लिश team. Great cricketer.
With all due respect to Ramakant Desai, this program does a great injustice to a fast bowler who came after Desai and before Kapil Dev - KARSAN GHAVRI. Karsan Ghavri had more wickets at better average than Ramakant Desai and he was in fact the first Indian fast bowler allrounder. Also Karsan Ghavri was the first Indian fast bowler to claim 100 test wickets in the history. Karsan Ghavri unlike Ramakant Desai did not have Mumbai background. His struggle was from a small town of Rajkot in Gujarat. Almost impossible to make to the national team from a small town in those days.
Ghavri wasn’t a genuine fast bowler plus he used to start bowling left arm spin suddenly after bowling seam for 4-5 overs so he can’t be categorised as a fast bowler.
Ghavri could have been groomed into a more productive bowler but was repeatedly sidelined for Madan Lal. This was due to Bombay vrs Delhi politics in Indian cricket those days.
Karsan Ghavri was probably one of the only medium pacers who would come an bowl leg breaks when the ball lost its shine. He also batted well in the lower order.
While I agree that Ghavri was a very good bowler whose strike rate (64.5) was only slightly worse than that of Kapil (63.9), but it is not true that he was the first Indian pacer to take 100 wickets. Kapil was the first, he achieved this feat in January 1980 while Ghavri did it one year later - in January 1981.
Sudhir Naik at 2:43 is the cricketer who was caught shop lifting in London when India was touring England in 1974 i think! That was a disastrous tour for India and Naik was a total flop. He was never heard of again until now!!
I remember that incident and like many Indians, I wanted it to be true, because the tour was going badly and we were crying for the team's blood. Later however and after I matured, I learned that the accusation was false. A pair of socks was stuck in the legs of trousers that he was buying from the Marks and Spencer Store - without him realizing it. A glory hunting cashier accused him of 'deliberately' concealing it with the intent to steal it (and he/she was perhaps awarded bonus for the 'catch'). The team's stock at that time was low and Naik was pressured by BCCI, not to fight the accusation. Anyway, who would steal of all thing a pair of socks? If not big ticket item like jewelry or gadgets, maybe a tie or a tie pin or even an handkerchief, but a pair of socks? After that incident, Naik was selected to play 3 tests for India, did well in 2 including in one against West Indies' Andy Roberts and company. Like so many vagaries of Indian Cricket particularly in that era, he was dropped after failing in just one test. As for Marks & Spencer - I am sure that any Indian Team that toured England after that incident - if it was worth it's weight in salt - did not set foot in that store, costing them thousands of pounds in business.
You are making a wrong comparison bro.. Ramakant Desai was a victim of untimely burn out which compelled him for a pre mature retirement. Nowadays things are quite different for india .. we have number of fast bowlers to share the burden and it minimises the risk of burnout. Moreover if you talk about age so the Highest wicket taking fast bowler Jimmy Anderson is still playing inspite of touching 40
