It has to go both ways. If we don't listen with open hearts, we'll always be at each other's throats and end up divided again. The real problem is not just in Germany. They are struggling as we all are with the resurgence of the Aryan heresy. Just ask young people about God, if you don't believe me.

@@SaintJoseph911 I'm not in Germany but I do know that the church is misunderstood as uncharitable, probably not unrelated to the angry discourse in the comments on most Catholic web sites. People read the gospels and see Jesus as always kind and forgiving, not the impression of Christians presented on line. They will tell you that Jesus was a really good person, but if he were God he wouldn't let his church be so cruel. They think being good people means accepting all religions. They see intolerance and don't want to be associated with it. Even some kids who were very devout as children. And it's not only young people. How many adults do you know who are spiritual but not religious? I think this is putting pressure on the church in Germany especially with regard to gays because of what their fathers did in WWII.
We have a wonderful Nigerian priest on lone to our parish in Ireland. He reminds me of the priests of my youth, he is on fire with the faith, a really holy man. Please Lord send us more like him.

Our Parish priest is a lovely ,holy Vietnamese man. Sadly, he's being transferred in the New Year.
How fortunate you are in Africa to have holy Bishops and Priests who have been taught our faith and give to you. Our Blessed Mother brought me back to the Catholic Church of my youth. I received my First Holy Communion in 1952. The Sisters of Christian Charity were amazing teachers. I fell, but praise Our Dear Lord, I am home in a Latin Parish once again. I am crying listening right now. God Bless you Bishop.

What the Holy Father and all the clergy advocating for these doctrinal changes are trying to implement has been done in other churches, including the Anglicans , Lutherans, and a whole host of other Protestants . This is a very sad and agonising moment, especially I dare say among convert Catholics, who have told us that they came to the faith precisely because She was the only one proclaiming the fullness of the Christian faith.

@@AKdon68 Some people just don't read, so good luck with that. And no, it's not a short document. It took me one hour to read including the time to take notes and check a few definitions.
It also states in at least two places that there are blessings for couples: "For couples in a homosexual or other irregular UNION".
@@johannaholmgren8088 There are 2 types of blessings - Liturgical and spontaneous.
Liturgical blessings are only in context marriage.
Spontaneous blessings are for anyone including groups or couples. For ex, a priest would not know if the person is in sin and even in sin he should give blessings.
This is the blessing that Pope allows for same sex couples.

"the Church does not have the power to confer its liturgical blessing when that would somehow offer a form of moral legitimacy to a union that presumes to be a marriage or to an extra-marital sexual practice."
I believe that the authentic magisterium of the Church is, finally, speaking through the faithful bishops throughout the world. They have been silent for far too long.

For me, refusing to accept this document from the Pope isn't being political....it's upholding 2000 plus years of tradition and teachings and NOT conforming to the modern secular society that is pressuring the Pope incessantly on allowing gay marriage, women priests and bishops, etc.

I don’t think Fr. Mark Goring would like to use Bishop Mtumbuka as an example. His point is Africans are conservative and they claim this document is Orthodox. Bishop Mtumbuka on the other hand says this document is heretical in public dissent with the pontiff. Sounds to me Fr. Mark Goring needs to reckon with that African side, the side that sees a clear break away from tradition, an innovation to bless couples even if it claims it doesn’t bless unions.

I never knew how blessed we would be because of Africa. We in Arkansas have been so lucky to have priest from different parts of Africa and the people respond to their humility and holiness so much. Now we have them leading so many of us to the truth of the teachings of the Church in the horrible confusing times.

Whereas we the laity were rooting for some of these worthies to be mothballed sooner, much sooner! Wuerl has retired into the shadows, but Cupich is still aggravating the Catholic Church. It must not be forgotten that what happens in America is soon followed all around the world (and that includes matters pertaining to the Roman Catholic Church)!

Hi Father Mark, perhaps I can give you and your viewers some insight into the African mind. I was born in Africa and have never been off the continent. The culture of the black people of Africa is something very beautiful. They are taught from infancy to respect,care for, and obey without question, their parents, grand-parents and tribal leaders. The idea of same sex relationships is complete anathema to them . Nobody including the Pope will ever get them to go against this. Even if their bishops should try to sell this to them, they will fail. They will never sanction , bless or approve them, regardless of what the wide world thinks. They will pray for them but never approve them.

It could be so in small areas, but certainly not acceptable from any of these bishops to rail against the Holy Father in public, calling him apostate, heretic, diabolical, blasphemous and so on, and Western people applauding them and spread clips all over the Internet, when they themselves haven't got a clue of what the document truly says, and what the blessings are meant for in order to achieve the light of the Gospel.

It can never be "plainly obvious" by not knowing the whole context. @treasureisland1 should have included it before he wrote what Sheen had said, so the saying would at least have a premise.
Also now, when you add a new premise for why he was not canonized to sainthood, it's also an unsubstantiated claim which would need more comments to verify why he was not.
But the video here is not about Sheen, then your point, in helping the first commenter, is still vague but hammers continually on the inability of comprehending what the Church really says in that document, and the so-called African bishop clearly has not done so either!

I am torn on this one. I have listened to the Bishop of Africa and I really do appreciate where he is coming from; especially, concerning his beautiful people as being “a simple” people who love God. However, this Bishop has misrepresented what the Papal Document states. The document does not encourage the homosexual individuals to live a life of sin. This is where the Bishop is erring, in my humble opinion. Merry Christmas, everyone.

In you, I am sorrowful to say, our confidence and trust is very much broken, please don't lose us, we are faithful Catholics but we are not flexible with God's laws. The bishop in Africa said this declaration was not done for pastoral reasons. It offended and scandalized the church. Germany had nothing to do with it. The pope did it and the bishop said he does not know why. I could give you a couple of reasons.

@@AKdon68 I believe that was his intent but the wording needed to be more specific like a blessing for individuals if they wish to sin no more and be in good standing with the church. Therefore the blessing should come with a request to sin no more. The problem I see is that people in these relationships do not really believe they are sinning because they should be allowed to love whoever they want as told to them by the secular world not the Holy Spirit.

The African bishops rejected the Pope's heretical dictate while Fr is tiptoeing through the tulips on the matter.

@@AKdon68: Read Part III of that Declaration “Fiducia Supplicans” subtitled “Blessings of Couples in Irregular Situations and of Couples of the Same Sex” and stop pretending naivety. The fact that those blessings are to be separated from blessing of heterosexual, real marriage (Sacrament of Matrimony), does not change the fact that Declaration calls for blessing of sinful unions in paragraphs 31 - 41.

Thank God for the families in Africa for staying together and praying together thus we are seeing beautiful priests from them. We had Fr Joseph from Uganda, most loving young priest, his first parish in South Africa in our small town. After Fr Joseph had been promoted and had to return to Uganda, we welcomed Fr Francis from Uganda as well, and we absolutely love him!

I am torn on this one. I have listened to the Bishop of Africa and I really do appreciate where he is coming from; especially, concerning his beautiful people as being “a simple” people who love God. However, this Bishop has misrepresented what the Papal Document states. The document does not encourage the homosexual individuals to live a life of sin. This is where the Bishop is erring, in my humble opinion. Merry Christmas, everyone.

@@goodman4093 I appreciate your comment about “discouraging evangelism” for the Catholic Church; but, it is not the document that did this; it is “fake Catholic news” and other fake media that did this. Furthermore, the Taylor Marshall types will push for Church schism, rather than doing a fair read of the document.
For example, para 25 says, “The Church … _instead of evangelizing_ … an exhaustive moral analysis should not be placed as a precondition for conferring it [the blessing]”. Para 29 continues, *“even in sinful situations* -particularly when a prayer finds a hearing- _the believer’s heart lifts its praise to God and blesses him._ No one is precluded from this type of blessing. Everyone, individually or together with others, can lift their praise and gratitude to God”. Furthermore, a blessing for a change of life to a holier vision is seen here, in para 30: “pastoral prudence and wisdom-avoiding all serious forms of scandal and confusion among the faithful-may suggest that *the ordained minister join in the prayer of those persons who,* although in a union that cannot be compared in any way to a marriage, *desire to entrust themselves to the Lord and his mercy, to invoke his help, and to be guided to a greater understanding of his plan of love and of truth”.* And what is God’s plan for “love and truth”? To live a life pleasing to God; which means “No!” to a homosexual life.

We can see a blessing of the individuals once again will be one that strengthens the individuals for repentance, by stating in para 32: “32. [through these blessings] Indeed, *the grace of God* works in the lives of those who do not claim to be righteous but who acknowledge themselves humbly as sinners, like everyone else. *This grace can orient **_everything_** according to the mysterious and unpredictable designs of God.*
So, here we say “everything” in their lives to be “orientated” to the “designs of God”.
Therefore, “with its untiring wisdom and motherly care, the Church welcomes all who approach God with humble hearts, accompanying them with those spiritual aids that enable everyone to understand and *realize God’s will fully in their existence.[22]”* God’s will for their lives is to live a life without sin; a life of chastity (like all of us), a life free from homosexuality.
Church is in danger from the Gerrman clergy and God is raising up great clergy in Africa! God Bless the faithful Priests. Prayers for all priests to remain faithful to our beautiful Catholic faith

Father Goring....you stated that, overall, Africa (priests and bishops) isn't rejecting Fiducia Supplicans, but they are just fed up with compromise in the Church. That doesn't seem accurate. From what I've seen reported, the Church in Africa is unambiguously denouncing Fiducia Supplicans.
Father Chris Alar, from the National Shrine of Divine Mercy, gave the best presentation of this document in his Teaching the Faith videos...
