A capirote[1] is a Christian pointed hat of conical form that is used in Spain and Hispanic countries by members of a confraternity of penitents, particularly those of the Catholic Church. It is part of the uniform of such brotherhoods including the Nazarenos and Fariseos during Lenten observances and reenactments during Holy Week in Spain and its former colonies, though similar hoods are common in other Christian countries such as Italy. Capirote are worn by penitents so that attention is not drawn towards themselves as they repent, but instead to God.
Thought hazmat initially. Celebrity- not a fan of the Edge Class infinite balconies- just a big pull down window- not a balcony, that I can sit and close my slider behind, and keep the cabin cool.
I wear the lanyard on the ship, easy access to give to the bartenders. I usually put it in my backpack when I get off the ship or put it under my shirt.
I would probably wear the lanyard around the ship for easy access, but I would remove it and have it somewhere secure and safe from pickpockets when at port.
There is a wonderful documentary about Shackleton , his crew and his ship the “Endurance” which was found in almost pristine condition sunken beneath the arctic ice. I believe it was on the HistoryHit RUclips channel.
I doubt seriously the crew members, who are primarily from third world countries and villages within, had any idea what others might think of the costumes.
Those Tyvek hazmat suits led me to believe there was a horrible clean up to do. Never even thought of a hate group. People make more out of things than is the reality.
I guess if I'm going anywhere, whether a cruise or by air or whatever, I'll research ahead of time what fees are associated and make a decision. But honestly, how can I complain about a tax that maintains a literal port when here in the US there are extra (usually hidden) taxes, convenience fees, parking fees and other crap, and that's just at the hotel! Hell, I paid $26 for two combos at Whataburger today, and if I can do that, I can surely afford to pay a port tax to visit beautiful Iceland. Trust, I will remember Iceland far more fondly that those overrated burgers. Onion rings, however, recommended.
I don't wear a lanyard around my neck when I am walking around the port. I also take off the sticker that they give you when I have finished any tours. I just put them in my jacket pocket. I figure that I would keep a more casual profile.
We were just in San Juan, not on a cruise but we could pick out the ship tourist primarily due to the lanyard. My wife pointed it out and then it became a contest! We try to assimilate and avoid standing out if possible.
Back in early 2000’s I used to wear my Disney land yard and felt safe and when looking for other fellow tourists from the ship it was easier to identify them, but now the land yard is a giveaway to thieves and scammers.😖
My first thought on that crew picture was they were cleaning or painting crew with a bad choice in hats. AFAIK that well known hate group is not present in Australia and is probably unknown to the crew which rarely if ever includes Americans. Given the explanation, is it fair to assume they had some sort of colorful shoes and socks to complete the snow cone motif?
I wear a lanyard on the cruise ship. To me it’s the most convenient way to carry it. However I take it off and put it in whatever bag I’m carrying as soon as I’m off the ship. I never wear it while in port.
Yeah but that was a little different because they knew exactly what they were doing. They know full and well who the Klan is and what they stand for in the UK. Hell they have/had chapters over there and the skinheads use the same symbolism so there was no excuse for them not knowing.
Do they meet at the Coffee Kup Kafe? Yes, that is a real place. The funniest part is that in my old high school people who went to see the play The Promise would come back wearing their shirts. It was funnier because quite a few of them were black.
It's ok to make one aware of something they may not know about. A lot of people in other countries, especially new generations that aren't taught our history in their country, just don't know. Give them the opportunity to correct their unintentional "offensive" gesture, which they did.
I used to wear my lanyard for my sail and sign card when on the boat and took It off when we went on shore but Disney switched over to having the Magic Band+ that we were able to use for everything that we needed from purchases to getting into our rooms, so I didn't need to carry my sail and sign card any longer. Now I only use it for pin trading and so I'm able to leave my landard on board when I get off the boat. Now I'm able to use either my Magic Band+ to get back on board or keep my sail and sign card with me in my pocket to get back on board.
One particular item I see often in Colorado thrift stores are cruise ship drinking containers. You know, those Coca-Cola ones. I cruise frequently and I've learned to blend in as much as possible when I'm off the ship. I don't even carry a purse or a backpack. Just a regular small bag that is big enough to hold my water bottle and a towel, if I go to the beach. My ID, etc. stays close to my body, under my clothes. It works. I just tell vendors that I forgot my wallet. Flashing money around could possibly get you harmed. I've had my camera stolen and a bag that had 3 tee shirts in it. These items were sat down, at two different times, in front of me as I pulled my purse out to pay for items at the cash register. That was an end for me to buy anything on any cruise. Besides, I can find the same items on Amazon, if I want it that bad when I get home.
Read the book before building the Endurance - it will make the build a deeper experience. The book is freaking phenomenal. Several massive icebergs have recently drifted into South Georgia. The bergs hit the west side of the island (spoiler alert: the side of South Georgia Shackleton reached with the lifeboat), and the penguin colonies are on the east side of the island, so no conflict between the two.
Oops, phone slides easily out of pocket. Everything gone. Cross body bag holds everything. Just don’t buy so much that everyone in your party has hands full of packages. Then you are an easy target.
Hi Tony. Interesting choice of "costume". I think the painter's on ship's have some type of covering like that. The hood part, I'm not so sure. Really big block of ice. The poor penguin's. Lot's of news. As always thank you for all you do ❤
I love the way you addressed the costumes. I agree with you that they should not repeat that. Good intentions poorly executed. It may not be triggering to everyone but it definitely is to a lot of people.
All I'm trying to say is that perhaps they were unaware of the meaning here in the U.S. Hard to believe but trying to give the benefit of the doubt. Now if they do know and it was malicious, then that's a different story. I personally think it was in poor taste. The "good intentions" part was meaning, if they were supposed to be something innocent like upside down ice cream cones, then it was definitely poorly executed. But I appreciate and respect the difference of opinion 😊
I saw a KKK costume displayed on a prominent mannequin in the Slave Museum in Aruba in 2016. I’m a white American, but it chilled me to the bone. You have to walk past it to get into that room of the museum. I will never forget the cold horror that lodged in my heart. Maybe I’m unusually empathetic, but all these years later i still shiver at the memory.
Perhaps more people need to feel what you felt. If only to feel for a second one iota of what was experienced by those who were subjected to the ill will of this hate group. Empathy for others should not be unusual. Thank you for yours.
It is not the same in other countries. When I first learned of similar robes used in Spain foe Easter I learned to the Spanish the robes had a good connection. They were unaware of the American thoughts on the robes. So cut the staff slack
I always buy the lanyard on ships. I never really wear it, I typically leave the card attached to it and have the card itself in my pocket. I don’t like just having a card in my pocket, feel like I might lose it a lot easier

You don't usually find an ensemble crew in costume walking out on the open decks like that. Some people do pretend that they're making an innocent mistake to get away with things.
I never wear any visible id when I travel. I also take off my work id before I get out of the building.
I wear my lanyard. Part of my outfits😂. Thanks Tony for the daily updates.
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Written by Lennon and McCartney
I always used a waterproof zip closing spray container and put my ship card facing out, my ID also facing out, and credit or a debit card sandwiched between. No breakaway cord. Always worn inside my clothes once off ship.
They look like haz mate suits.
I think that the whole world doesn't revolve around the USA! People from other nations, countries don't know....nor do they need to know, our history. OUR HISTORY is our history, I was born here in the good ole USA, I love USA, but I sure don't expect the whole world to know everything about us. We sure as heck don't know about them. OH PLEEEZ
However they have to be careful with everone unfortunately!!😅❤
Yes I do wear my lanyard in port but under my clothes. I’m worried I’ll loose it
We wear the flexible clips that Carnival gave us years ago in the casino. I clip my Sail & Sign card to it, then clip it to my belt loop and put my card in my pocket. It's handy for gambling and easy to get at when showing security officers on and off the ship. They stopped giving those out some time ago. I wish they would bring them back.
Coned hoods do not mean the same thing around the entire world. In Spain they wear them during Semana Santa parades around Easter. I believe the pointed cone represents them being closer to God. I was pretty shocked when I saw them there. Anna
Never wear a Lanyard, I’ve seen people get yoked out when the Lanyard gets caught up on the stair side rails and also getting off the ship and on to a tender, you can end up in the water.
The locals know who the tourists are.
Exactly. Lanyard or not, locals can spot visitors a mile away or more.
I wear my lanyard sometime.but mostly keep it with my passport, money ,sign & sail card ,in a fanny pack in front ,everything's right there when needed.
The costumes didn’t look like the classic white hooded costumes. I was shocked when I first saw the picture but I don’t think it was what we in the United States might think. They changed immediately after being told what it could be interpreted as. I think they didn’t know what it could be interpreted as.
Reminds me of the South Park episode where Cartman was dressed up as a ghost, but everyone thought he was dressed up as a Klan member.
@fixpacifica lololololol right?
I wear my sign in seal card on the chain around my neck and when I go out into the port, I put it inside my shirt. I should also say that even on the ship I put the card on the chain inside my shirt so it’s out of sight.
Don't get offended when offense is not meant.
Professional victims
I wear my lanyard when I am on board and I wear it getting off the ship, but I pack it away in my backpack when I am in Port. I take it out and put it around my neck as I’m getting back on board.
Shackleton's story is truly awe-inspiring.
I'm sure the younger crew members had no idea.
I wear the lanyard. I only do excursions through the ship but I put the lanyard in a pocket while off the ship.
Hey Tony. You could tuck your lanyard under your shirt when walking around. I’ve done that. Because when you bend over I always get it caught on whatever so I tuck it under my shirt. 👕 Have a good day.
Thank you for that information .
Very interesting.
Thought hazmat initially.
Celebrity- not a fan of the Edge Class infinite balconies- just a big pull down window- not a balcony, that I can sit and close my slider behind, and keep the cabin cool.
I wear a lanyard all the time.
I wear the lanyard on the ship, easy access to give to the bartenders. I usually put it in my backpack when I get off the ship or put it under my shirt.
Norwegian Wood from one of my favorites Rubber Soul
Shout out to Tony for pronouncing "Melbourne" correctly!!!! I'm not even Australian, live here in Los Angeles. But I've traveled.
Shoutout for pronouncing Brenden Fïûguòr properly! 🎉
I don't wear a lanyard around my neck when I am walking around the port. I also take off the sticker that they give you when I have finished any tours. I just put them in my jacket pocket. I figure that I would keep a more casual profile.
The upside down snow cone group 😒🤔
Norway is expensive anyway! I was singing Norwegian Wood with you😅!
Great video ❤❤❤❤
If a ship docks in port and suddenly the port is filled with people, they already know you're a cruise passenger there.
I can just hear Luda singing that song! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wow! That is crazy. I don't think they knew better, but now they definitely do!
I wear a lanyard on the cruise ship. To me it’s the most convenient way to carry it. However I take it off and put it in whatever bag I’m carrying as soon as I’m off the ship. I never wear it while in port.
I heard the Krispy Kream Klub was stopped fairly fast in England for similar reasons.
Norwegian Wood
Yeah but that was a little different because they knew exactly what they were doing. They know full and well who the Klan is and what they stand for in the UK. Hell they have/had chapters over there and the skinheads use the same symbolism so there was no excuse for them not knowing.
Do they meet at the Coffee Kup Kafe? Yes, that is a real place. The funniest part is that in my old high school people who went to see the play The Promise would come back wearing their shirts. It was funnier because quite a few of them were black.
Just the way you dress, act and talk is a giveaway. Ordering ice with your water is a big give away in Europe
I don't like things around my neck, so i switched to putting the ship card on a bracelet or on my water bottle carrier strap. In ports, it's in my bag
I wear a landyard but put in pocket while in port
Cruised Elephant Island in 2023 where Shackleton was stranded. Fascinating history.
I put my card on the back of my phone in one of those slip cases. Works great. Phone and card together in my pocket.
Oops, phone slides easily out of pocket. Everything gone. Cross body bag holds everything. Just don’t buy so much that everyone in your party has hands full of packages. Then you are an easy target.
Amazing book!
I thought they were dealing with something hazardous. I've worn similar garb at work.
What about the 42.00 charge into Cozumel? I haven’t heard anything regarding implementation yet…
Not their fault. They didn’t know. This was cleared up immediately.
The ones who suggested it probably knew though....
Hi Tony. Interesting choice of "costume". I think the painter's on ship's have some type of covering like that. The hood part, I'm not so sure. Really big block of ice. The poor penguin's. Lot's of news. As always thank you for all you do ❤
I am reading that book now! It's fascinating!
I love the way you addressed the costumes. I agree with you that they should not repeat that. Good intentions poorly executed. It may not be triggering to everyone but it definitely is to a lot of people.
Definitely not good intentions
Maybe they didn’t realize what the white hoods symbolize to the US. Giving them a pass on that.
I need you to explain how "good intentions" can be extrapolated here. The story is BS.
@@pamwolf609 You say "robes", but do they wear hoods that cover their faces?
What’s wrong with you, history is there so it’s not repeated, stop with, oh I so applaud.
I always buy the lanyard on ships. I never really wear it, I typically leave the card attached to it and have the card itself in my pocket. I don’t like just having a card in my pocket, feel like I might lose it a lot easier
Norwegian Wood by the Beatles
Thank you for the cruise news!!
I wouldn’t wear the lanyard off the ship because I would feel like a dork honestly 😂
Yes Tony here in Australia we are very aware of the KKK and its history we are a very educated country 🦘🇦🇺🐨😁
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.
I'm on the South and NO I didn't think the hate group!!!!
I thought contamination suits. Now THAT was scary.
As someone who lives and works in an area that is one of the most visited places in the world you know who the tourist are. However things like wearing a lanyard makes you more of a target much like a limping buffalo to a lion.
