  • Robert Fripp ~ 'The Second'
from the bootleg (audience recording) album 'Pleasures in Pieces'
Live at The Kitchen, Soho, NYC 1978
    .
    Engineer -- John Beresford Tipton
Guitar, Electronics [Frippertronics, Devices] -- Robert Fripp
    Producer -- Elwood P. Dowd
    .
The date is important, marking as it does Robert's debut as a solo performer and the first public unveiling of Frippertronics. The opening night (of two) was subject to intense interest from the public with lines spreading around the block in freezing cold weather, requiring an impromptu second performance to try and accommodate the heavy numbers of eager punters queuing up.

I was lucky to see the second concert on the cold day in February. It was truly miraculous that all that sound came out from a single person, a guitar with pedals and a pair of tape recorders.

Not the first frippertronics concert. Far from it. Fripp & Eno toured quite extensively in the mid-'70s playing frippertronics. I think some of the concerts are even on youtube...

I wouldn't call a tour of 7 gigs total " extensively" and the gig in Sainte-Etienne they were Booed off the stage.

Still... The Fripp & Eno Live in Paris CD is now a legitimate (non-bootleg) part of their discography. Can't really call this a 'public unveiling'. Doesn't make it any less good though, and the fact about the queuing crowds is fascinating.

Cool music; ugliest album cover ever!
