      Absolutely an overpriced non sleeper railway journey if you have booked the very expensive cabin or the budget seat only option. Probably the road journey is more comfortable even if the roads have potholes ! The Scot rail trains normal old ex BR trains also have heating issues , so much so they call, it the glacier express cold train journeys in the winter cold inside as well!

      I think the 156 trains have also been "refurbished" with ironing board seats.

    Great video Mark ! Thank you for using the word "stance " for the bus station - I grew up using the word - where I live now they've heard off it ! - hope the tourist board pays your fare !

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  7 месяцев назад

      Cheers. I’ve only learnt about the stance from doing videos like this up in Scotland tbh. I don’t get paid to do these videos. Apart from the odd sponsorship I think is relevant and worth doing, everything is self-funded and hopefully all my costs are then covered by ad revenue.

    Lovely video Mark of a beautiful part of Scotland. I was a wee boy of maybe 12 when, on a family holiday to Mallaig, we crossed the Connel Bridge. I remember the Falls of Lora fascinated me. You could see them as you crossed. They are a tidal race and as such occur at particular times according to the tides themselves. I also have a vague memory that the railway tracks were still in situ but with wooden sleepers placed to take up the spaces between the lines. This allowed our car to cross rather bumpily from South Connel to North Connel. We were heading to the Fort and Ballachullish. The ferry had a very long queue so we took the long way round Loch Leven via Kinlochleven and on to Fort William itself. Don't worry about the Scottish / Gaelic place names and how to say them; you are much better than many. If in doubt, just ask the locals. Leven by-the-way is pronounced Lee-ven, or even Lee-vin. (I will need to read that again !!!!!) . On another note, Highland Airways fly between Oban and the Isle of Coll; often with children attending the High School in Oban. I may be wrong but they may stay in Oban Monday to Friday.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. I bet Connel Bridge was really interesting when it was ‘dual purpose’ so to speak. And the water underneath - not sure if I caught it on a good day or not tbh? It is a lovely part of the world though yep and travelling by public transport this time instead of driving, I think I was able to appreciate it a bit more. Cheers 😊👍

    Yes they call a bus stop 🚏 a stance in Scotland.Another very scenic one in west Scotland is Glasgow to Campbeltown.West Coast also own Borders Buses that run in the area south of Edinburgh and a few internal services in England like Berwick to Holy Island infact i think that they have taken over the former Travelsure services in Northumberland so must get down as far as Alnwick.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  6 месяцев назад

      Interesting. Yes I learnt about the ‘stance’ thing in Aberdeen a while back. Borders Buses you may have seen my vid on the Carlisle to Edinburgh bus. That was a great little journey, cheap too for a 4 hour bus ride! I must try the Berwick route at some point

    Fort William is possibly the ugliest place in the Highlands and for once we can't blame 1960's planners; the High Street was built with such that the backs of the buildings face Loch Linnhe, a really poor use of the location.

    On the departure board at Fort William bus station there was a 09.15 service to Uig, arrive 13.50. I suspect that connects with the Cal Mac ferry to Tarbert on Harris, which I did on a cycle tour many years ago. Now that would be a good bus/ferry journey.

    This is also a very useful route because it connects the two forks of the wonderful West Highland Line together. Along with the equally useful bus links from Fort William to Inverness and Kyle/Portree/Uig, it's included in the Spirit of Scotland travel pass which has replaced the Freedom of Scotland, still a good bargain even though CalMac have stopped including free travel on their ferries. (Probably they need all the money they can get after the debacle of the 2 new ferries).

    I passed through Oban on a Rail/bus tour to Iona once but for seven consecutive years I spent about two weeks touring Scotland with a tent and two or three boys; and my huge German Shepherd dog. We spent much of the time around the West coast ,or zig-zagging to the far North; and we'd see a lot of Fort William.
    I love the area's links with the story 'Kidnapped, and the Glen Coe massacre. The West is really worth visiting, or using it as a base. Absolutely stunning.

    ..Hmmm..... Maybe something for my next day out of the office. Bus/train to Fort William, this bus to Oban and return bus/train back to Glasgow. OK, that's another good idea from you I will do. I have driven Oban to Fort William (rather... been a passenger in a car) both before and after they made the road 5 km shorter with Creagan Bridge. Never rated it. But the bus will be better. thanx again ! Btw That Morrisson shop in Fort William is a good shop and a lifesaver for hangry travellers. Some really good pastry there. Btw What I think about Fort William after 20 visits ? I am still undecided. It is a nice place, I guess. Never been there more than max 3 hours on every visit. PART 2: You asked for more routes like that. OK, you mentioned Glasgow to Campbelltown with return on ferry. Great tour. Glasgow to Mallaig on train is top 5 world known. Bucketlist. Also.... Glasgow to Uig with ferry to either Lochmaddy or Tarbert is a must do too. Edinburgh to St Andrews the coastal road up and back again over the hill direct route is a must do. What about Glasgow to Kirkwall, bus and ferry ? You asked for it. Now I have made you regret it. *smile*

    Spectacular! I've driven the route by car but it looks like the higher seats on a coach give even better views! (plus not having to concentrate on the road!) Fort William town is definitely a bit meh but it's a great location for exploring the nearby mountains.

    The scenery is certainly beautiful and looked a nice coach to travel on. Looking back I must have been on this road on route to Fort William when staying on Loch Awe side during a family holiday back in 1993 ish. Alas the weather that day (most of the week) was appalling and clearly the views were shrouded in wet mist and rain as was the rail trip to Mallaig the same day. I think the sunniest day was our visit to Glencoe which was stunning. After a school trip that year to the loverly Hartz Mountains in Germany we decided a trip to the Black Forest was in order the following year which produced much better weather.

    Last time I did that journey was about 1973 in winter. At breakfast in the hotel it started snowing heavily so my co-driver and I fitted the snow chains to the coach, only the second time I'd done that in the UK. What should have been a two hour journey to the lunch stop back then was over eight hours, most spent shoveling snow. Arrived back in London the following afternoon, long out of hours with very pissed off pax.

    Retired ? Must be surely as most people wouldn’t have the time to do this every week if they were working. Would be nice if we all could all do that. Most RUclips channels that are gaining subscribers through regular uploads are by people who don’t work, as doing it part time on RUclips wont get anywhere. Anyone who can afford to do it full time will always usually make a success of it. For everyone else, if you cannot afford to invest time and money into anything, same old story in the real world, no difference. A society of haves and have nots.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  6 месяцев назад +2

      No I’m not retired. Like anything, put the effort in and you’ll get the rewards. It’s hard work and requires serious commitment to grow a channel when you have a ‘regular’ job. But post regularly, engage with your viewers, put out decent quality, consistent content and yes you may well get somewhere. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it though.

    This is an area of Scotland which I long wanted to visit and indeed the bus I believe can offer beter value for money, time and scenery. Great report. However I do believe that you might not be able to buy the ticket that close to departure time in summer as the demand gets higher and there's a chance that either Citylink or West Coast Motors services may get filled up quickly

    I spent a week in Oban 20 or more years ago. I remember Connel Bridge. As you said, it's a tidal river. Passing over it in the morning the tide is flowing one way, in the afternoon it; flows back in the opposite direct. It's obvious really, but the first time I saw it, I was impressed. One day I was on Connel Bridge looking at the river, I saw a whirlpool in the Falls of Lora, caused by the tidal race. Again, it's something I never forgot. Near Oban, is the third largest whirlpool in the world, at Corryvreckan. I'm now 75, I've never seen a whirlpool since, it was fascinating.
