Big Bear Bald Eagles ~ "Jackie's talon penetrates shell" ~ 3/19/2021

- Starting yesterday, there was progression of hatching, but then it remained stagnant and the egg had a crushed appearance.
Today, Jackie takes over for Shadow and as you can see, her talon went through the shell. Right after, there is a spot of blood.
Regular and slo-mo speeds
After, more views of Jackie and Shadow along with both eggs and picking away of the shell.
No matter how this baby passed away, it is extremely sad.
RIP Sweetheart - We really would have loved to meet you. 💔

Even though I posted this video seeing what was not transpiring, that normally would have and knowing in my heart that the baby had passed away, the confirmation from Friends of Big Bear Valley and Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam on their Facebook page has been posted, which is as follows:
Watching nature often fills us with curiosity and adventure, with joy and delight. Sometimes nature is hard to watch, especially when there is an unexpected turn of events that we do not understand. The chick in the first egg that was working on hatching last night, appears to have stopped moving this afternoon. This is very sad and also, it is part of nature.
We do not know and cannot know what might have happened, no matter how much our human minds would like to speculate or try to figure it out. With this nest camera, we are observers of nature. We have been granted the privilege of watching the daily lives of this beautiful pair of bald eagles. I am willing to watch and to learn and to both laugh and to cry at the things that we see here...
…Jackie and Shadow are continuing to diligently take care of the second egg…we will watch and see what happens next. Thank you all for your great interest in and love of watching Jackie and Shadow in their daily lives. We appreciate your dedication and support.
Eagles do important spiritual work. We are so fortunate to intimately witness their cycle of life like this. Thank you.
Eagles do not "do" any spiritual work. You, for some irrational reason, see something spiritual in how they live.
@@jonball49 you're not in a position to make statements of this sort, clearly
@@rosemma34 Of course I am. I'm also in a position to say that you're an irrational, emotionally projecting nut case.
@@jonball49 Commenting something negative really makes you feel better about yourself, huh?
@@mrubin08 The comment about eagles doing "important spiritual work" was inane. It is pure anthropomorphic projection, and it's childish.
I’m just so sad😞 I’m from Southern California so BB is very close to my ♥️ Jackie and Shadow are the sweetest and funniest pair of eagles🦅 We have next year to look forward to with much hope.
I cry my heart hurt because J&S are very dedicated for her eggs but nature some times is cruel. God bless you J&S hope next season is better not much snow and cold.. I love you beautifull. J&S.
So sad. Jackie and Shadow have had so many challenges. Praying for second egg to be a successful hatch. RIP little one. Fly high.❤🙏🦅😢
I believe the eaglet was deceased before that. i think something happened during the wingslap
People commenting hate towards the eagles is just ridiculous. If you're "done with a nest" when something goes wrong, ok move on. Nature is brutal a lot of the time unfortunately. I've been keeping up with most nests at the moment, heartbreak is usual and expected. They instinctually know what's going on, we as humans casually watching DON'T know what's going on most of the time.
Great comment. The flat out Dunning Kruger effect displayed so unfortunately in chat/comment sections is disheartening.
It's been a joy to watch bald eagle nests via technology - something that could unite us in admiration for the - sometimes sad - innocence of nature. Nice to see informed people in the midst of cray. Blessings
🦅💙🦅💙🤦💫🙏📿✨🍃
Thank you for this video, it's relieving to get some answers to what happened.
You're welcome!
it’s unfortunate but these things happen. in animals that lay bigger clutches it’s very often that multiple babies don’t hatch, and multiple babies die in the process of hatching. let’s hold out for bb2!
My heart is breaking for them.
They might've sat on the egg/hatchling a little too long/hard and also they kept moving it around too often. It's just what I observed! I'm still too sad.😥 RIP little baby, you're no longer suffering. 💔🐣
They always roll them around often and they seem to do it more during a hatching because they feel the movement under them. Rolling them does not harm a healthy egg. This egg never really had a normal pip - a small hole that slowly grew over time.. All of a sudden there was just a big crack which is not normal. Nor did I ever see anything that resembled a normal looking chick even when the egg was really broken up.
That 3-part cry...2 squawks followed by prolonged keening...has to be grief. They were comforting each other. So sad.
The egg was already dead and smooshed when the talon came down on it
I think so too.
@@cyndi2998 So do I.
I think the same. It would also explain the more casual treatment of the egg (stepping on it). If they knew it was gone already.
I agree the eaglet had already passed here
I had big doubts even before the piercing. It didnt look good all day.
@@melmel007 why do you say that ? it was churping earlier . .
@@melmel007 yes thank you
@@melmel007 I saw that too. She was startled badly by something in the night. I didn't see the squirrel.
@@melmel007 yeah I noticed the flatness too and had a bad feeling 😞
Agreed
It's no joke when they say that tragedy is just around the corner, in these wild nests. I am a bit saddened about comments I have seen and keep seeing, because no amount of anger or speculations will bring the chick back.
It's just people expressing their grief. I was bothered last year when people on day 40, 45, 50 still kept insisting the eggs could hatch. Eagle Eggs are amazingly consistent at hatching at 35 days although delayed incubation can buy a few days. I know they were trying to be hopeful but I just kept the chat off because I knew it was not possible.
@@sharyn8733 I know that people take the eagle families to heart - I love eagles too and I watch a number of nests, but at times the reactions are excessive and they can offend others. Arrogance and aggression do not lead anywhere useful. One added complication is that written things can be misinterpreted, because you cannot see the facial expressions. I see your point and I personally try not to get too involved, because I know how easy it is to fire up, and I am here just for the love of the eagles :)
@@Luceforall yeah, that is definitely true. I feel some disappointment when things don't go well but some people seem REALLY broken up about it. Even making a general comment will sometimes cause people to get upset. I don't think it effects the Eagles. They run on instinct and hormones. Even when they hatch and fledge only 1 in 10 make it to adulthood. We are privileged to get this view into their lives.
@@sharyn8733 It doesn't seem to affect them as much as humans. I really don't know what sort of emotions they are capable of. Look at Jackie and Shadow now, how they go on about their business and carry on incubating and bringing nesting materials. Bereavement is a little more obvious when they lose a growing nestling but there again, it may be just my impression. I know that the rate of survival is low and it is even sadder that, at times, it is due to our activities - lead bullets, cars hitting them when they feed on road kills, rodenticides, electricity poles... Yes, we are privileged and we should accept that life for them is not a fairy tale. :(
Honestly I saw this when it happened, I replayed and crunched, but the chick did move before or in response to the piercing. It’s like mom was checking it for life. I’ve seen other eagles do that when the chick wasn’t responding and had died. I think that’s why she was looking so intensely at it and did what she did.
6:05 Im not crying, you're crying. 🥲 They just adore each other. BB1 RIP
I done believe that's blood from the talon piercing. The talon barely went through. That spot is from the innards of the shell
I'm so sad.
Have been watching Harriet and M15 since E9..
I'm heart broken...
Heartbreaking 💔
Let's all 🙏 for 2nd one! ❤❤
I think I found it. Go to 0:50-0:53 on the squirrel slap video from the night before, make sure it is his res and frame by frame. It looks like the chick popped it's head up when Jackie was jumping at the squirrel, and the chick disappears under Jackies foot when she comes down. There just isn't anything else that happened frame by frame that even comes close. Take a look.ruclips.net/video/dQ6_901vmpM/видео.html
i think you're right.
It chirped during the night after the slap
God Bless them both ,with a perfectly healthy fledgling!🦅❤️🦅
There has been zero chirping from the egg since this piercing occurred. The only movement I saw after this point was caused by the parents or the shuffling of the grasses. The parents have both been eating pieces from this egg all evening as well. Not at alll the "usual"... I'm heartbroken.
Yes. Its sad. People get real defensive when i mention..these 2 have bad track record. They are not good parents. 😭
Did they..eat it???😳
@@Celebritiessuck3000 *These 2 have a bad track record...they are not good parents*
What in the world makes you say that??? A normally hatching egg could usually withstand a lot of pressure; in other words if the chick was pipping its way out of the egg like normal, the egg would’ve still held its structure, and a foot or talon landing on it quickly would’ve just slid off. But this egg was not hatching normally. And Jackie and Shadow continued to do what all eagle parents do while their chick is in the process of hatching...continue to incubate and roll the eggs until the baby is out. Blaming this on the parents is like blaming a mother who’s baby is injured after a breach birth at home that she didn’t expect or know was happening.
We never saw a normal pip that slowly got bigger and bigger. All of a sudden there was just a a big crack in the egg and I kinda knew something was wrong. It wasn't a normal hatching from the beginning. When it comes to birthing babies if all goes well the washing machine repair guy can deliver you baby but if things go wrong precious minutes CAN make the difference between life and death. My niece wanted a home birth but changed her mind thank god because her cord prolapsed. The nurse was on top of her holding the cord up as they rushed her to the or. It was close but the baby lived so yeah it would have been her fault if she had stayed home as her choice would have resulted in a dead baby. I had all 5 of mine in the birthing rooms at the hospital that look like bedrooms on purpose because I knew if something went wrong help was near by
@@nickymarch2914 well..im saying that because ive watched all the other Eagle cams with good Eagle parents. No crows are eating their infertile eggs. Theyre not piercing the eggs with talons etc. Shadow and Jackie are adorable and most vocal loving pair ive seen. I love them. Good parents? No.
This is the hard part of the circle of life. I hope the second egg is viable.
I think the chick was already gone by the time this happened. Shadow also stepped on the egg at one point. I think they both knew the chick was not alive. If FOBBV had not been giving people false hope, this would have been more understandable and not quite so shocking.
This is sooooo true! FOBBV has been giving false hope for days. First about BB1 and for the last few days about egg #2. FOBBV did interviews with news media about egg #2 being close to hatching. Not even a pip, and Jackie and Shadow haven't been acting like there is any life in egg #2 (like they would if they could hear an eaglet at this point). Delayed incubation would have had egg #2 pipping within a couple days of the egg #1 pip. BTW, I've read comments on other chats from knowledgeable people that the eaglet that got crushed could have been egg #2, where egg #1 may have been non viable. On top of this, FOBBV discontinued the chat. Makes me wonder if part of that was to not face reality that this is the second lost season for Jackie and Shadow. 2 eggs last year and 5 this year with no success stories. I feel bad for people who have been holding out hope this long and all the broken heart emojis that will be on videos in the next few days. There is always next season.
I saw it live and my workmate said what's the matter? I explained it to her. It happens.
Shadow came a little close to doing it again yesterday I think.
I seriously doubt that second egg is going to hatch. I could be wrong - I was one other time, too - but it's looking highly unlikely.
Nature can make you very sad.🙏🌿🥀🌿🥀🌿🙏
(I know this might sound a little insensitive, but this is one of the reasons the motto "trust the eagles!" is kinda silly. They're not particularly intelligent creatures, like ravens or magpies. Amazing and interesting, sure, definitely not very intelligent.)
Yes, bird brain !
Virtually ALL of the comments in the chat are inanities like "trust the eagles," or worse. I've never seen so much childish anthropomorphism in my life. The chat should just be shut down permanently. It's a total wasteland.
@@jonball49 I cringe a little deep inside when I read messages like: "Oh, tell him Jackie! Those are kisses! That's an argument! Aww, such a cute couple, when Shadow comes home from work with a stick he's so gorgeous!"
@@aurex8937 I cringe a LOT and quickly close the chat. When I first go to the RUclips page to check on the eagles, and if chat is active, it opens up by default. Despite knowing better, I always take a glance at it on the slim (less than 1%) chance that there may be something informative. Then I hide the chat so I see suggestions of dog rescue videos ;-)
@@jonball49 the moderators on this "chat" are weak and often lacking in knowledge. Most of the chatters write as if the birds are part of a zoo or are their personal pets. On other eagles nests I've learned quite a lot. Here I learned to suffer fools better.
Yeeeaaah i had seen that and held my breath and wondered....
I'm heartbroken. :'(
So how long before we admit the other egg is not viable? When will the birds know?
Hi KD. The parents do not know if an egg is viable or not. On another nest I follow, there is a non viable egg. The surviving chick is now 6 weeks old and it was only a couple of days ago that the male eagle buried the egg under nesting material. The parents have been seen still incubating the egg, on and off. So it may be weeks or over a month before it really sinks in. As far as us humans are concerned, if we do not see a pip within the next week, we can begin to give up hope.
I agree. We have to face these are rotten eggs..again. Also last time their eggs rotted they left nest after like 60 days. (Not 100% sure of that)
Are you a vet? Zoologist? Ornithologist with raptor specialty? 🤦
I'm sure I saw that the second egg was pipped.
😭😭😭😭
??? What happened to the dead egglet?? I don't see it on the nest still.
Just read the comments. Read anything. Please
@@mortalclown3812 I did read thank you very much!! READ EVERYTHING! So damn rude.....sorry I don't spend my life on here like some
I was thinking the same thing. So many posts, it's difficult to read them all when we want to know. There will always be rude people, but just know that when someone lashes out at you, they are really lashing out at themselves. Kindness is difficult when you are an angry person.
Regarding the egg, I think shadow & Jackie removed it. Have a blessed day!😁
@@es1776 THANK YOU!!! I appreciate the comment with a nice response. Maybe they should PIN a comment that gets straight to the point.
I try to keep as much as I could.....I just never seen Shadow or Jackie discard the dead baby. So sad
so many stupid comments of people who can't even tell them apart...The chick was already dead and Jackie knew it. Superfluous guesses about mistakes and "bad" parents...
Before calling others stupid tell us how did you know? Did you check its heart?
@@syz911 She called comments stupid - not people. 🤦

I wish we knew what they were saying
They're not "saying" anything. They're just making eagle sounds.

It does thank you..
It was Shadow who pierced the egg. Sad, but I guess this is how we all learn in this life. Many tragedies as we go. I believe our little one had already passed before the piercing. I just had the feeling.
I was when this happened I just didn't comment on it. Was hoping baby would be ok
Jackie😖😪😑
😥😥😥

Nothing is accidental, the sages say! This is a bad marriage. Hard weather and little prey.
There was never anything in that egg. There was not enough mass to fill the shell. Where did the chicks body go then? The egg was accidentally broken by Shadow when he was doing his shift the previous day. When he changed shifts next the egg was broken and wet from the contents spilling out. It is sad but part of learning about nature is accepting the facts and hard truths that we observe. My posts were removed for speaking the facts that were there for all to observe. I was correct.. That should not happen especially to a fan who has been watching these magnificent creatures for over a year now..
There was something in the egg could hear and see the chick, you are wrong.
@@cecilesaenz Then where did it go? There is not one picture of it posted. Should have been easy to see..Sad but hoping #2 is viable and will hatch normally soon.
I agree. Posts are removed for silly reasons. Especially when someone tells the truth🤣
I could swear at one point I saw a tiny head and beak sticking out. I think the chick did run out of energy.
I agree there didn't appear to be anything in the egg except maybe yolk and some nesting material. It didn't seem like a normal hatching from the beginning. The egg shell was very thin and crushed easily. Probably was not viable still sad though. The chirps may have been coming from the 2nd egg...really hoping the 2nd egg hatches.
