What a deeply touching, emotionally conflicting and creative music video... I haven't felt this strongly from a song and music video for a while. The ending made me feel some kind of way. It felt like a heart-wrenching betrayal after such a positive and beautiful reflection of the adventures of this little guy, especially with all of the supportive entities around him. The beauty of the journey brought cathartic tears to my eyes, but then the ending made me frown and the tears disappeared and were replaced by some kind of empty disappointment, anger, and my heart was all twisted up. I don't usually comment but this really sent me on an emotional rollercoaster.
If the ending were cut out, truthfully I probably would listen to it more often and fully let it in, but that's also just my own personal bias- I'm a sucker for happy endings and positive philosophies.
On one hand I totally get that the pain of the ending is part of the message- live fully in the moment, and enjoy the scenic route with full awareness, because for all we know things might end in a horrible way, who really knows? But mann. It stings man ahaha. I was hoping it would end with him being tucked in and going to sleep or something like that. I had a friend who had someone they know die recently, and I was thinking of sharing this with them as I was watching, but the ending made me think otherwise. It would just make them feel worse.
Man. What a conflicting and strong response this song has- I really both love it strongly and also feel some kind of philosophical barrier to let myself fully enjoy it and let go with this song all at the same time. I could talk about it a lot more but I should probably stop myself before it becomes too much haha
Truly an Incredible, conflicting, and thought provoking piece of art.
This song makes you take your guard down to enjoy the lyrics, especially because of the theme. I love that the video throws you onto the ground once you let your guard down. Existential pop is meant to evoke emotions like this, Jerry's music has always hinted at the unexpected unneeded BS life can throw at you. It's hilarious in a dark way too seeing the paper cut out gnome getting all of this validation, but at the end NOBODY cares. You live for yourself, you live for people care about and you await the unjust and painful end.
THAT history teacher ^

actively sobbing about the fate of our little guy
I'm 34, this song and this video have inspired a new era in my life. Thanks, Jerry!
I would suggest listening to all their records, Jerry is the master of existential pop/indie/electronic music. The eras are all very different but strike a similar emotional chord, albeit you have to like electronic music for the first few records. Here's my recommended list:
- Fuzzy Logic is an existential experience in itself, but if you're don't like Animal Crossing GC music or lo-fi EM it doesn't hit as hard. This record hits hard for me because it was clearly made in a snowy winter in NYC, while I found it in a very awful isolating winter in upstate NY. It really hit home and said alot of things I wish I could have said better/felt but and couldn't express. This record helped me through a severe patch of depression and alcoholism.
- Big Pop For The Chameleon World is a huge leap from the previous record, especially in presentation. It adds a lot of sarcasm the first few releases were hinting at but not really making fully apparent. However the sarcasm always makes way to thoughtful reflections on being alive.
- Carousel has lots of bangers and sort of retreats back towards the quirky style of the first few releases. However the lyrics get more potent about our society and how we perceive the world. It also points out how we're all fucked without making it too depressing.
- Toon Time Raw is a literal masterpiece, with BBNG (Bad Bad Not Good) as the secret backing band, it takes the music to another level. Once you listen to the lyrics for a bit you realize that it's gotten even more special and resonates harder with the every day living experience (It's narrated through the lens of "animals" that are clearly Jerry and the people they knew).
- Like a Baby is the first dip into the full live band that isn't BBNG but keeps up a similar level of studio musician quality the rest of the records hold tight.
- The last few records hold a very specific JP style and are FAR FAR less experimental and electronic... but goddamn do they hit home.
I'd suggest listening to them in order, break out a note pad or memorize the words being sung. "Larry Parchment"'s music is something that has to be experienced at many levels, musically, production wise and lyrically. Experience them at your leisure, but this order really shows their progression towards some of the best non-electronic hypnogogic pop in the game.
Jerry never misses. Another classic.
Ive been obsessed with this music video and song for days now and it's got no sign of stopping. Really might be some of your best work so far in terms of music production. The visual world reminds me of Cornelius music videos (which I love) but ive not seen it used in a narrative context like this.
This song has grown on me so much this week
Same, and this video has made me connect with it so much more
great song
I get you Jerry, your weirdness is so admirable. You're a talented fella full of soul
very fever dreamish, i love it
Chekov's Paper Puppet; if you have a goofy character made out of paper in the first act, he must get set on fire in the third.
When I hear music, I listen to the background instrumentals, but I paid detailed attention to the lyrics. Listening to this song just helps me get through the path of flying out the nest to live a new life in a city I don’t know. I love this. Thank you.
Forever in our hearts... I want one of those green dancers at 2:31 so I can never forget
