    I built a bad ass 440 nitro methane monster. I fired it here at one time and I reckon some neighbors a tad distance away weren't too happy. Cops showed up they loved it but I was gently informed some kind of mufflers rather than open headers would be slightly appreciated and also to please refrain from doing it when the sun is not shinning. It was only 10:30 pm had to hear it.

Went to many drag races there always was thrilling to see the front-engined fuel dragsters run there they were machines of beauty, thunder and smoke..back then they would often smoke the rear tires all the way down to the time trap.

The older brother at the Skelly station in New Brighton was one of the best custom car builders in the midwest. My favorites were his 55 El Camino and 50 Chevy Fleetline. I both start and shut down this engine on regular gasoline, mostly for safety reasons . . . considering it runs on 95% nitromethane. Also the gasoline does leave a residual amount of oil in the upper cylinders preventing any potential seizure the next time it's started.

    • @stevenandersen3525

      Gasoline. Nitro is so caustic and generates such a hot fire in the cylinders that there's virtually no upper cylinder lubricant left. Gasoline has a small amount of oil in it so it's used to replace that residual lube in shutting down the engine.

    • @stevenandersen3525
      @stevenandersen3525  Год назад

      That might be due to these differences: the new top fuel cars have more that 100 additional cubic inches, a supercharger with more than double the capacity, two magnetos producing nearly 100 amps v/s the mag on this car that makes about 3 amps . . . and many other issues. This car makes about 2,800 hp running on 90% nitromethane by comparison to 11,000 generated by the new versions. This video was shot over 6 years ago. Since then there have been many new changes made to the motor. If you want to see it more currently, look for the video shot 3 years ago in the lineup on the right side of your screen titled: Alcohol to NITROMETHANE

      You clearly have no experience with this kind of a car running on 95% nitro !!! If that blower pops, where do you think all that very explosive fuel under pressure is going to go !!??? What you can't see is the fact that I also have an onboard halon fire extinguishing system as well.

      @@WillyWillis1965 You're absolutely correct in that assumption !!!! The difference being that he is NOT inside a quite trapped space and like I am in . . . and likely able to have someone grab the fire extinguisher located on the back of the starting cart to put him out. Over all the years I've been involved with nitro racing, I can recall several times that this exact kind of event happened. In all of those cases, those closest to the explosion were burned, the worst being the driver in the cockpit.

      kind of like a bomb squad suit.
      you wear it when near bombs, aka a supercharged
      mill running a mega mix of nitro, lol.
      it doesn't matter if the car is moving or motionless, it's the engine that the
      driver needs protection from..specifically the fuel therein.
