Dear Eric and the members of Twitch/RUclips community.
I was enthralled by Amans speed run of the Stonewall but now seeing the hippo I think its a solid opening.
However to quell my curiosity,i typed in ChatGPT " How well does the Hippo fare against higher rated players?" and this is what it came up with :
The Hippopotamus Opening, characterized by the setup with pawns on the second and third ranks (e.g., 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 a6), is generally considered unorthodox and unusual. It aims to create a flexible and solid pawn structure while discouraging direct confrontation in the center.
However, the effectiveness of any opening, including the Hippopotamus, against higher-rated players depends on various factors such as the skill level, playing style, and preparation of both players. While the Hippopotamus Opening can be challenging for opponents to face, it is less popular and less explored compared to more traditional openings, which can give experienced players an advantage.
Against higher-rated players who are well-prepared and possess a deep understanding of chess principles, the Hippopotamus may not be as effective as against less experienced or unfamiliar opponents. Strong players may exploit the lack of central control and aim to gain an advantage by taking the initiative, developing their pieces harmoniously, and targeting potential weaknesses in the Hippopotamus setup.
Ultimately, the choice of opening should be based on your personal playing style, preferences, and level of understanding. It's essential to study and practice various openings to develop a versatile repertoire and be prepared for different types of oppone

The 3 minutes format is much better. You are explaining the plans and that is what matters. The defense is fun to play and I have played it OTB once (I won). I have a friend (GM) who used to play it, and btw I live in Brazil.

I think its a beautiful solid opening and i cant help but draw comparisons with the movie 300 solid structure.....AAROOOO...can be played at the background,...this is a solid solid opening, unorthodox or not.
Can u ask your higher rated players to play stuff like gambits, kings indian, stonewall (spclly stonewall vs hippo) and other openings against the hippo...it would make for ana wesome educational content. U get your likes and we get an enthralling education in the strategy of warfare.
