I’m glad you covered this brand. When I found out about the Nazi stuff, I was angrier than I had ever been at a celebrity or brand. The “selektion” name especially made my stomach turn. I loved that the brand was vegan and cruelty-free but there was no way I was ever giving her another cent after that. Even now, I’m not sure if I would buy anything from KvD Beauty just because it left such a bad taste in my mouth.
Yeah, and I've always thought that ever since the Holocaust, "selektion", especially spelled specifically like that, is very much referring to *that* specific thing/system that happened in the camps.
Agreed. The brand itself is tainted, in my mind, because when I see it, I think of Kat Von D., regardless of what the meaning-du-jour for the acronym is.
honestly, when questioning the whole "'we do the hard work for you' posed in front of a cotton field" really just screams "we have no black people high enough on our staff to feel safe and secure in their job to speak out against that"
After the brand separated and no longer financially supported Kat Von D, I decided to give them a second chance. I have one of the Dazzle Sticks and enjoy it. I completely understand those who don't support the brand, thats valid. I also don't support brands with owners that I don't want to have my money (Ofra, Too Faced, Kylie, etc)
I think that Kendo not coming out and basically kicking Kat Von D out was probably strategic to not make future or current partners worry about the solidity of their contracts.
I had to pause this video and comment my utter horror. I dont know how I didnt know that Kat named a lipstick shade, “Selektion.” I thought the anti-Semitic rhetoric was attributed to her partner so I stayed away from the brand. Knowing that it was Kat herself just makes me physically ill. Anyone and I mean anyone who knows even one ounce of that process would want to stay far away from anything associated with the Shoah. I am at a loss for anymore words truly. Thank you for this video, Kelly.
Kat von d is so appalling. The interesting thing is that today is actually the holocaust remembrance day here in Israel.. Thanks for the details, some where unknown to me.
I always thought Lolita was about that lolita sub-culture thing in Japan. In hindsight, the name of the subculture might have been a reference to the book that I just never realised (I heard about the clothes first, and the book way later)
Love this series!!! I used to be a fan of KVD because that tattoo liner was my holy grail. But after all that hooplah, I could no long support the brand. Even to this day, while I agree they have had a rise due to TikTok, I still can’t find myself to support the brand anymore 🫢
11:39 my former co-worker I used to work with was named Lolita, the first thought I got in my head when we were introducing ourselves 'Who the h**l names a child after a creepy book?' but I found in her home country (Latvia) it is a very common name.
Girl, you're extremely underrated. The video deserves at least 500k views. It's so high quality. I binged all of your Rise and Fall videos. Keep up the good work!!!
As a cute little goth kid back in the day, I loved KVD products. The packaging was dark and edgy, matching the creator herself. As I got older, the only product I really loved were the liquid lipsticks. Then the whole anti-vacation thing happened and for me, that was game over.
I love KVD products, they were on graphic liner before everyone else. I want to try their new pencils. Love the apple balm and really love the concealer.
KVD was similar to Urban Decay bc it was an "edgier" brand with great products, but I think KVD really locked in their market. The tattoo inspired artistry with (at the time) unusual colors that really served that alternative community. I think they've lost some of that identity, but they are very smart to use TikTok audiences!
Okay girl u convinced me i watched your whole rise and fall series and got a few of your videos on my recommended page and u know what u convinced me to subscribe i enjoyed every single video plus i like ur personality
I remembered when I found out she was anti-vaccine. I used her foundation, powder foundation, eyeliners and liquid lipsticks religiously. I believe I was in my grunge phase - my sophomore year, 2016-2017. I didn't throw her products away because they weren't cheap but I couldn't bring myself to use them again and eventually got rid of them. I'm a lot more careful with what I consume now though, that's for damn sure
Just want to say that I do not really watch RUclips videos anymore but I LOVE this series. Thanks so much Kelly, you made a subscriber out of a non-subscriber :)
Thank you for doing this video even though it may be a magnet for some gross comments. This series is great and it’s good to have all of this info in one spot since it happens over multiple years and years ago I feel like not a lot of people knew it all or would remember. ❤
I’ve always been the person that believes everyone deserves a second chance. She’s had 3,4,5,6,100! If the rebrand makes a huge announcement stating they abhor all her actions I would give the brand a chance. It’s sad they have some iconic products
I agree with everything you brought up except in the last minute about the packaging. I was hoping you'd cover it a bit more, but with the split of KVD the person, they kept the original packaging because they had already made a bunch of it and didn't want to dump it into the landfill. That's all well and good, it's when it's come to the newer products post rebrand that they still use the original logo that bugs me, I even think to this day they still have some original packaging with existing products. It really makes no sense to me if the brand truly wants to rebrand and keep themselves away from KVD the person, they need to get rid of the original logo in everything. Even that popular balm had/has the original logo, to me it's them being cheap, not a tribute to tattoo artistry.
Agreed. For example, after Abercrombie & Fitch's new CEO came in, she had their social media completely scrubbed and started fresh because she knew that that was the only way to make consumers believe her when she said, "This is not Mike Jeffrey's Abercrombie & Fitch." It was a way to clear the people's palate, so to speak. I think that if Kendo wanted to keep the alternative / tattoo art - inspired brand identity, they totally could have done that, but with maybe a tweak or redesign, something to communicate, "Hey, we're not THAT K.V.D."
Kat's antivax views are what made me shy away from the KVD brand. I didn't know about the other stuff besides Lolita. I also won't buy Lime Crime and Ofra because of the founders. I keep hoping they'll step away and no longer make a dime from those brands.
I didn’t care that much about not vaccinating until covid. Now I have to hear anti vac rants from half my family. At this point I won’t even bring up vaccinating because anti vaxxers won’t shut up about it. I’m more appalled by Kats husband. He had a huge swastika tattoo.
Thank you so much for these videos. I know you’re not telling us how to feel about brands or where we should spend our money, but the info you provide helps me make more informed decisions about the makeup I buy so that I can support the brands that align with my values and morals. And it’s all just so interesting! Love you Kelly!! 💕
I was hoping you would do this company. I remember watching her a few times on Miami ink so I was wondering what she did to make her leave KVD. It really is so sad and horrifying to know there are people that think like that. Thank you so much for doing this video.
With the way the D in KVD has always been stylised, why didn’t they just transform it into a B and made Kind vegan Beauty aka KVB. I was thinking that since their rebrand :p
So have I. It would have both been subtle enough that a casual buyer would have recognized it but still be more of a decisive rebrand that separates the brand from Kat Von D herself.
Hallo, I glad you added this brand to this series. I threw away all the products I owned. I refused to pass along. I just can not buy any thing from this brand even rebranded. Maybe if they relaunched without the KVD. I just can't. There are a lot of choices out there so I am not missing out to be truthful. I love this series and your channel. Thank you for all the time and hard work you put into your videos.
I was a fan of her tattoo artistry, and bought a few of the products that launched way back when (loved the foundation!). But, when the "real" Kat was revealed, that was it for me. And now, I have no interest in the "new" brand, associated with her or not. There's a "stain" on it.
YES…Kat’s Lock It Foundation was life. Her Miss Argentina liquid lipstick was my summer color too. That’s what I was wearing before Fenty Beauty and Julia’s Place came out. Being a chocolate colored girl back then was hard because only a few brands had my color. I was done with Kat when she befriended Jeffrey Star.
@ AyeshéIsAlwaysLovely I agree 100 percent. I use Jeffree Star as a barometer. If people like or associate with him, I don’t associate with those people or purchase their products.♥️
I almost didn’t watch this video because I’ve never even used Kat Von D or KVD, but I’m glad I watched. I always knew she was controversial, but didn’t really know why. But wow, what a terrible person. Those names of products are despicable.
I LOOVVEEDDD her tattoo liner. However, if you buy it now, it is such a miss. Idk if they changed the formula or something, but it will not stick to my eyelids and it fades so fast. It used to be such a staple, but I cannot justify buying this eyeliner anymore.
The thing that makes me giggle about KVD Beauty is how after messy racist Kat the new tattoo artist face of the brand is a mixed race Swedish artist Miryam Lumpini. As if to erase Kat’s issues away by boosting a talented black woman artist. It’s so cynical but as a fan of her work I’m happy someone who isn’t a mess is getting the partnership dollars.
I remember the celebutard fiasco. That shade had been there for quite awhile but then a deluxe sample was put in a Sephora gift with purchase and then it blew up. It put a real spotlight on that shade and KVD as a whole. Later it was the underage red! I've never purchased from that brand as it never appealed to me and it still doesn't. The only reason they are getting all the hype on Tik Tok is I'm pretty sure they are sponsoring those tiktokers to hype it up.
When it came to the name Lolita, it simply came to me as a Japanese fashion style with multiple sub genres so I never questioned it. I just thought that they were giving attention to the fashion style, not the book so it never crossed my mind as something inappropriate until someone else gave insight on it.
I would say do not read the book it is so disgusting and loosely based on a true story. If you are interested there is a podcast that does a deep dive into the book. I liked her stuff before I found out about her antivaxx and nazi sympathies. I don't know any Holocaust survivors but they went through so much trauma I can't imagine. I didn't know that she compared the meat industry to concentration camps. Wow that is disturbing and I can't think of anything else to say..😡
@@beckybertish7841 Please don’t just shut down this genuinely good book like that - at best just give a warning that it’s through the POV of someone disgusting, not the novel itself. Yes, it’s uncomfortable but it is distinctly making a point about the disgusting ways people like that can twist and manipulate the innocent acts of children.
Kelly if you responded -It's a possibility- why would you say it was name after that book. That's not a fact ? I've heard that name used in Mexico and it reference to Aneme bcs ppl there like that style. Why would you state it as a fact and not a possibility or opinion?
Yeah I've seen a few people mention this as an alternative source for the name, but at least in the US in the time frame the lipstick came out, the book was much more known as a reference point than the Japanese fashion style, so I think it makes sense why most people would assume it's from the book. Also given the brand also had an "underage red" shade, I think Kelly is even more justified suggesting it comes from the book, not the style.
i always thought that the shade name lolita referred to the lolita fashion subculture, lolita fashion is unrelated to the book and i personally am very inspired by it
I love this series and this video was especially interesting and also kind of shocking as I only heard that there was a scandal and not about what (at that time I was not interested in makeup that much, especially not in high end). I would love to see this deep dive about essence, catrice or nyx
I am really loving these videos from you. I didn’t even know about the back story behind the name Lolita. I was with you in thinking that there’s no way that KVD could be revived.
I recently bought one of their shadow sticks. It's nice, but I still feel a bit uneasy supporting the brand, even though I know she is not technically affiliated with the brand. They really did a misstep not doing a complete rebrand away from the name.
Great video. Really interesting point about tiktok. When Clinique black honey went viral I was so confused because it’s such an old product. I think KVD should have easily rebranded as KVB- kendo vegan beauty
Kel I'm so feekin pled I watched this video I'm fkin fumin and most definitely won't be using any of her products that I hav on my channel ty u done great💖
I had no idea she was so controversial, I just heard of her antivax rhetoric. The rebrand name/initials/aesthetic is still very similar to her original brand look, so it’s very strange that kendo didn’t rename or completely rebrand and release under a different brand name. I guess money rules at the end of the day.
So much I didn’t know…..wow. Super disgusting behaviour on her part and I find it especially disheartening that the company didn’t publicly ask her to step down and make it crystal clear that they in NO WAY were in support of her beliefs 😔Safe route or not it would have been the right thing to do and just the fact that they allowed so much of it to happen prior to her stepping down is somewhat questionable….. I learn so much every time you post one of these videos - truly fascinating. Thank you for all the hard work you put into researching the history and time lines! I look forward to the next one - you rock 🥰 Xo 🇨🇦
Yikes! I never really knew the full drama around KVD because I felt like I was pretty young when she was having most of her scandals with the brand. I only ever bought one or two lipsticks from the brand but it wasn’t until right before the brand removed KVD that I decided to boycott the brand but it’s so much worse than I thought! I didn’t know about those shade names (except Lolita) or things she said/did her personal life that are awfully offensive. I still haven’t purchased anything from the brand, but I am not against the brand now that she’s not associated
Thank you so much Kelly!! You are beyond amazing for these!! Very insightful commentary especially on Holocaust Remembrance Day!!! Thank you for bringing awareness ❤️
lolita she absolutely knew. While the word itself isn't bad...as it also refers to feminine, a victorian fashion, and even a formal girl's name....the context she used it in made it clear it was about the book.
also as far as a step down..she was losing too much money from the controversy (the nazi purchases and the halloween costume along with the hubbys tattoo and his chosen art) and end up selling the brand at that time for a massive loss. look up the official sephora releases on who purchased it and for how much.
when i was in high school i knew of kat von d because my friends were obsessed with her tattoo art so for a long time i just thought she was a tattoo artist.... i think my ignorance was blissful in that case
My favourite series!! The only people buying the brand now are TikTok teenagers, it’s actually funny to see when you’re a bit older and have seen all the different phases of the brand.
There’s still a bad taste in my mouth from this brand. I just can’t shake it. Hopefully one day they change the name because I still associate it to her, and no product has had a pull on me(I’m not on TikTok) to change my mind.
You can’t force anyone to sell shares, therefore the brand didn’t ask her to step down. She sold them because it’s better to sell then to own (soon to be) worthless shares.
My friend made a point depending what we say it can be a slur to a different language. The one thing I'm going miss is there eyeshadow palettes and her art work on them.
I’m completely shocked by this information!!! I had absolutely no idea that this woman was so controversial. I remember watching LA Ink back in the day, here and there. I was definitely not a devoted fan of the show by any means. However, I never heard of anything that inferred to antisemitism or anything of that nature. This is so very disturbing to me. I have never bought anything from this brand and I’m not sure I’d be comfortable enough to do so in the future… I’m just shook at the moment…tbh
No matter what you think about her as a person, without Kat this brand just isn’t what it used to be. It’s not fun or unique. Before her brand came out it was nearly impossible to buy unique shades of anything. I remember being in high school wanting a deep purple black lipstick and I couldn’t find anything even close. Kat branched out and gave us those types of shades that other “normal” brands were afraid to make and sell. After she introduced “crazy” shades other brands copied her and now I can go out and buy a black lipstick or a green or blue because she broke down the barrier and showed companies that people want unique options. Now that they are KVD they took away most of the fun colors and they are just as boring as any other brand. And she’s not the only brand to have questionable shade names. Nars orgasm anyone?? Or anything from Jeffrey star for that matter. Love her or hate her she did wonders for the makeup community. I have met her a few times and she’s the sweetest most generous person I know. She really doesn’t deserve the hate the media gives her.
I have always thought Kat Von D, and now KVD have really amazing products. However, The anti-semetic stuff I just couldn’t deal with. I have a hard time believing Kat Von d didn’t know what she was doing when she named shades Lolita. She’s very shocking in that manner and she embraces it. I do have a problem with any brand/s that have hyper sexualized or inappropriate shade names. I refuse to buy them. I have children at home and I have to set the example. There’s no reason for it. Nars and Too faced are big offenders in this area. I really appreciate that I can watch your videos with my family and children around, and know that there will be no vulgar language. Great video, love the deep dives!
You make a good point. I don't live with kiddos but the Nars branding etc makes me cringe 😬 I'd rather support brands that don't put effort into calling their products such ridiculous names
I’m the same way. I work in a professional setting, and go to church, if someone were to ask me about my make up, I wouldn’t tell them I’m wearing a make up shade called “orgasm”. I think it’s disgusting that they rely on sex to sell instead of being creative.
@@AlethrialTheElvenEmpress yes! Why would they even market products like that in the first place?? What is the thinking, that "sexy" names will make us buy more? Lol
@@warmgreytenpercent because, in western culture especially, sex sells. People think that it’s “funny” or “sexy” or “edgy” to wear makeup like that. It’s really not. People enjoy feeling rebellious though.
@@AlethrialTheElvenEmpress The most cringy to date is Nars… naming their blush deep throat. Really? This is high-end make up in very sleek packaging, we’re going to buy a blush called deep throat? Yeah, no!
We’d known about the antisemitism for over ten years. It was crappy but not surprising that no one cared until the antivax thing happened. Even before that, some of her shade names and product themes showed that she didn’t care about minorities. I can’t comfortably buy a palette that looks like a church window. I can’t keep that in my home, you know?
@@marysloane1709 because of the reasons why Christian art is so prevalent that Christians think it’s secular, to the extent that someone would ask a religious minority why religious Christian art isn’t a neutral visual.
@@rachaelr7567 maybe it’s a cultural thing or I just don’t get it. I like the idea of a Church window, it may be a bit weird I don’t know I think it reminds me of the beautiful churches I’ve visited (I’m not a Christian myself)
@@marysloane1709 yeah you just don’t get it. It shouldn’t be hard to understand why many people can’t view Christian iconography as mere art. Christians can’t try to kill us off and then say, “but look, it’s just a pretty window.” My religion never had the chance to create art that might enter the fabric of society. Surely you understand why people don’t want to watch Woody Allen films anymore? And maybe it’s a “cultural thing”?…yes it’s literally about religion and the ways in which Christianity has asserted itself as the norm.
@@marysloane1709 why are you still arguing with me about this? It’s rude and offensive. You don’t get to have the last word on someone else’s religious oppression. Stop.
You've made some valid points. Can't believe she had shade names called Lotita or references to being underage and the whole Holocaust thing?! Just makes me wonder if her kid is safe? How disgusting.
I think there was also controversy with even the packaging details when she was part of the makeup line, from what I remember she asked someone she knew a tattoo artist to make the designs for the makeup packages and never paid them. It was a lot of drama and she just ignored it but I don’t remember if tattoo artist sued. I never really like her makeup and something about her really didn’t sit well with me then all the drama came out about her and I’m like oh man she is a lot.

Same. The last time I bought it was a total waste of money
I never understood why they didn’t just rebrand as KVB for Kendo Vegan Beauty. It flows well when saying it, and it doesn’t use Kat’s initials.
This shirt is gorgeous!!!
Totally agree!
Thank you!
Watching while swatching :)
Hey Sam!
I love watching these! Please keeping making them 😊 I would love if you included pictures of the products throughout the years!
KVD products are so good. Their reformulated liquid lip is amazing. The brow pomade? Awesome!
I love this series, and I am glad you did KVD Beauty as I've never really heard the whole story!
The thing that makes me giggle about KVD Beauty is how after messy racist Kat the new tattoo artist face of the brand is a mixed race Swedish artist Miryam Lumpini. As if to erase Kat’s issues away by boosting a talented black woman artist. It’s so cynical but as a fan of her work I’m happy someone who isn’t a mess is getting the partnership dollars.
you are so good at telling stories kellyyyyy
This video was SO well done!
I love this series!! I found your channel recently and cannot stop watching 😃
Thank you for watching!
These are my favorite videos! Thank you for taking the time to research and put them together!
Can you talk about what’s going on with Cover FX? Their products are STEEPLY discounted at Ulta.
oooh your hair, and that eyeshadow with that top is so pretty!
When it came to the name Lolita, it simply came to me as a Japanese fashion style with multiple sub genres so I never questioned it. I just thought that they were giving attention to the fashion style, not the book so it never crossed my mind as something inappropriate until someone else gave insight on it.
It’s definitely possible!
I love you doing this series it's very eye opening. I was not born Jewish but my beliefs are in the Jewish way and KVD sickens me.
Oh. My. Gosh. I knew there was vax drama with Kat von D but I had no idea how much other crap she/the brand did 😳
i always thought that the shade name lolita referred to the lolita fashion subculture, lolita fashion is unrelated to the book and i personally am very inspired by it
I loved her on Miami ink and La ink tbh. I didn't follow the cosmetics though.
I've only tried the travel sized tattoo liner.
I love this series and this video was especially interesting and also kind of shocking as I only heard that there was a scandal and not about what (at that time I was not interested in makeup that much, especially not in high end).
I would love to see this deep dive about essence, catrice or nyx
I love your eye makeup!
Wow alot of things I never even k ew about Kat that she had done. So informative. Loved the video girl.
Huh I had no idea about any of this. Glad I never bought from the brand back in the day! Some of the newer launches have piqued my interest.
omg i had a hunch your new deep dive would be about kvd!
Great guess!
@@KellyGooch i love this series! i look forward to ones you’re going to do in the future 🌸
I am really loving these videos from you. I didn’t even know about the back story behind the name Lolita. I was with you in thinking that there’s no way that KVD could be revived.
Love your blue inner corner 💙
I recently bought one of their shadow sticks. It's nice, but I still feel a bit uneasy supporting the brand, even though I know she is not technically affiliated with the brand. They really did a misstep not doing a complete rebrand away from the name.
I absolutely love this series ❤️🔥
Thank you for watching!
Kat will always be unique & cool in my books. Dig her talents.
Very interesting, I had no idea these happened with the brand
I wish they would just change the name and packaging. I still hear so many people calling it kat von d
Great video. Really interesting point about tiktok. When Clinique black honey went viral I was so confused because it’s such an old product. I think KVD should have easily rebranded as KVB- kendo vegan beauty
I use the KDV balm and I actually really like it lol, it just has a learning curve to use it
Kel I'm so feekin pled I watched this video I'm fkin fumin and most definitely won't be using any of her products that I hav on my channel ty u done great💖
Could you do a deepdive on Benefit ❤
I love this series!
I look forward to the next one - you rock 🥰
Xo 🇨🇦
I watched Miami and LA ink and loved kat von d at first but I didn’t like what happened with Miami ink. She was always hard to work with it seemed…..
Iove when you associates this kind of videos with the evolution of the brand's products
Can't believe there are now people so young but that do not know the story
when i was in high school i knew of kat von d because my friends were obsessed with her tattoo art so for a long time i just thought she was a tattoo artist.... i think my ignorance was blissful in that case
Good video! I like this type of informational content.
Yes definitely! TikTok feeds into it so much doesn't it? Glad to miss out on these viral products and not support this brand!!
Same here - even tho she’s not tied too it at all I just can’t
@@laurajesso88 I was a fan of hers before, so when she showed her true colors, I just couldn’t with her.
I’m excited to know I can still get the amazing formulas KVD has without supporting that monster
You can’t force anyone to sell shares, therefore the brand didn’t ask her to step down. She sold them because it’s better to sell then to own (soon to be) worthless shares.
Not a genz here but I gotta say that balm foundation is amazing 😍
When you talked about her controversies you sounded so down like ‘oh god I have to say this’ I don’t blame you lol
I love the trooper black cake pencil eyeliner it’s the best eyeliner I’ve ever tried but haven’t been able to get it for a long time in the uk x
I've always thought the shade name Lolita was in reference to the fashion scene. Did the brand ever clarify which one it meant?
I do have a problem with any
brand/s that have hyper sexualized or inappropriate shade names.
Stop.
@@rachaelr7567 ok, you were right! I didn’t get it and you definitely didn’t help me get it! Never mind. Bye
