    Once again, you delve into a game that practically reduces teen girls into caricatures. You're my hero, Ben!

    I have one of those "how to host a murder" games but, my friends won't play it with me . I guess it is kind of creepy getting a call from someone asking you to come over for a murder theme dinner party. Great video by the way! A good laugh to start my day :D

    This episode was hilarious, I used to play girl talk with my sister. Your level of knowledge of the game had me in stitches... Good job Ben.

    I had that same model of cassette recorder you used in the game. It worked pretty well for recording lines to study for plays.

    The ending was hillarious with the alternative music tape in the cassette player instead of the game tape.

    My brother used to work at Osco in the late 80s. He came home with that tape one night from a damaged box of that game. While watching this vid, I was so sad that I didn't get to hear the Pablo's House of Tacos bit, but then, there it is! Right at the end! Thanks for posting! Keep up the awesome work!! :)

    I have heard of these. But, thank god I never played them. My Dad never liked them. I remember him telling me about these one day in 1994. We were coming back along the Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5) and he told about how he hated them. So, I asked him what did he do with them. He smiled and said, 'Well, I went to Montana with your Mom one winter, and we burned them.' He really hated the concept and regretted (and still does to this day) buying them.

  • @MissILoveMovies
    @MissILoveMovies 9 лет назад +10

    I like how you deafened Girl Talk on the gender basis thing. I believe people should have a choice between femininity or not. I'm like a mix of both, I like a lot of feminine things and enjoy buying things in the color pink, but I also like some things considered non feminine. It's a huge spectrum you can be anywhere in between on.

    • @fjccommish
      @fjccommish 7 лет назад +1

      People can choose what they like. But your gender is set.
      Ben is wrong on this. Games like this, movies, music, media in general present social ideals that become normal to the people who play, watch, listen, consume. Kids learn from media. Today, all sorts of abhorrent ideals are normalized through media.

    I can recall a game with a record that might even fit as a record ripoff. K-Tel put out a game about producing a bit record. At the end you would drop the tone arm on a record they supplied which would say "It's a hit" if you won.

    • @FairPlay137
      @FairPlay137 8 лет назад +1

      Ryan Cozzubbo I think it doesn't actually "select" which audio to play; it's random chance.
      And no, it doesn't pause or play the tapes.

    where would dream phone fall?

  • @XaneMyers
    @XaneMyers 6 лет назад

    Hmm...so, how it works is that when two compatible cards are inserted, you can hear the cassette tape play? How does it know what to play, then? If it's just playing the tape continuously, only heard when the cards are inserted, wouldn't the game be limited to only a certain type of call, like only the ones heard in this video? Plus, if it's just a cassette, then I assume all of the girls and boys have the same voices. Otherwise, how would it be able to select specific calls for certain combinations on something as limited as a cassette tape?

    • @JL-sm6cg
      @JL-sm6cg 2 года назад

      I think the Date Line box has some of kind of mechanism to stop the tape until the cards are inserted. It works much the same as a computer data cassette recorder.

  • @kristina80ification
    @kristina80ification 9 лет назад +18

    The gender stereotypes in this game ARE a bit disgusting, but saying that this silly game was consciously trying to ingrain gender roles or what not is a bit ridiculous, lol. I think it was more of a case of clueless old school marketers having complete control over a product.

    • @DurradonXylles
      @DurradonXylles 8 лет назад +7

      And to add to that, it seems like the worst thing about this game is how badly it's aged with it's incredibly dated stereotypes. You can tell that the game is a silly 80's product "made for girls" just from the color scheme and the graphical aesthetic (not making a vaporware joke when I say that) of both the board itself and the box it was packaged it. It's a poorly perceived product of its time that no one beyond that time would or could take seriously, and even during its time I could imagine people laughing at it.

    On a more serious note, the people that say this game is sexist need to get their head checked. I mean, this game came out in 1988 and was perfectly fine by the standards of the time. Personally, I don't give two shits about gender identity, as long as somebody does my dishes, their gender doesn't really bother me either way.

    You know, Girl Talk (along with strip poker live and those ten thousand 900 ads) should serve as a reminder to any "menist" who complains that "men are always being objectified these days" that they have it good these days, cause Girl Talk is rather disgusting, stereotype-wise, but it is Symptomatic of a larger issue, which is that old toymakers were still thinking that is the 50s.
    In other words, it's not all that ridiculous to have a small political discussion over a board game, after all, Stan Lee himself said that life is inheritly political, it's just that it's a reminder of a different era that is, thankfully, being placed in the past.
    Also pink is a cool color.
    As for the whole "not gay friendly" thing, trust us, we know.

    I'm beginning to think Lesbian Seagull with her politically correct lambasting has a point!
    All of a sudden the "I! Like! Boys!" dancing cheerleaders from Teen Witch come to mind.
    Though to be honest, in the UK, we had Section 28 which by law prevented children from learning about anything relating to homosexuality at school at all.
    I'm guessing the reason why you've failed to finish a game is to stop the brain rot setting in!
    OMG Tina hates computers!!! OMGOMGOMG!!! yep, there's Lesbian Seagull's point right there, though back in the 1980s computers weren't the mainstream things we have now, they were purely for boys, for geeky boys at that as it was all about learning to program them and I really don't remember girls having computers back when I was at school and everything was 8 bit.
    My God, I would despair giving this game to a niece of mine. Then again, I'd probably buy a Raspberry Pi 2 with a nice pink case to put it in, y'know, for girls!
    Incidentally, am I the only one who remembers Marhsall Cavendish and their series of magazines that would come with a tape and all kinds of other projects?
