We had a little StarCraft pop up slide in back in the late 80's, early 90's with 2 young kids. We went on some fun cheap adventures with that thing. Had to park by the campground bathrooms, but we had fun. These things have sure changed since then. We just had a 1/2 ton chevy. Nicely done video.

I'm currently choosing a truck for another large camper by a competitor but I must have missed any mention of the weight of this unit, claimed weight of mine is 3200, but I just calculated adding only water propane batteries and some heavier options. I ended up at 4000lbs before chow toys clothes pots tools ice fluids like oil or truck stuff. This one is even bigger!

The thing about Arctic Fox is they are built for the PacNW outback....strong and warm. I had mine for 14 years and nothing broke.....incredible! High capacity water, holding and LP. With the Onan LP generator and the huge fridge you can off grid for a long time.

At 4:45 : there needs to be a door with magnetic latches. There is no need for a face frame if you simply use longer screws with a back plate or add support inside the wall. Who thought of using a cheap window shade? The cab window should have a blackout roller shade with wood or aluminum valance. The pleated shade ends up torn or ripped off the wall with one wrong step going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Other than that, these are nice robust units. In the RV world, you really do get what you pay for.
Anyone posting comments about their unit leaking after just two years, failed to properly maintain it. Ensuring all seals and seams are intact is part of your maintenance schedule. I check all my seals in the spring and again in the fall. Our RV are not only subject to extreme temperature swings, but they also flex during travel. On sunny days a closed camper is going to heat up rapidly and expand. Once night falls the unit then contracts. It doesn't matter how much caulking or sealant you put on your unit, the seal will eventually need replacing. The other issue is those doing their own sealing do not properly prep the surface resulting in premature failure. Or they've used the wrong type of sealant because they didn't want to go buy what is required for that application. So they slap on some sealant they had around the house. Sure, they often told themselves it was temporary and would redo their work with proper sealant come fall or when they returned from their trip. Typically we forget or procrastinate. The following spring you'll notice the side wall is starting to bulge or delaminate.
No matter the RV, always keep it covered with a cover designed for your RV. Insurance will not cover water damage unless a tree falls on it or you have a covered accident which caused structural damage. A few hundred bucks for a fitted cover will help to ensure any questionable seals on the roof are kept dry during the off season. I made eight arches to use under the cover to help keep water from pooling on the cover around the ACs, vents, and skylights. This also allows me to visually inspect the cover for any large rips, tears, or areas where the sun has started deteriorating the water proof top panel at ground level. When the tops starts to show signs of deterioration it's time to replace it. The old one can be cut up for other uses or given away to someone with a carport who wants to keep the dust off.
Wow... Got way off course. "The more you know... ding"
    Cheers from Seattle!

I just watched the "Host Mammoth" video and felt as though that was easily the best slide-in-camper available, then I heard the price....... after I was woken up from my fainting spell I found this camper at almost half the price. Whew, you can buy a brand new F-350 Dually Diesel extended cab truck for what they are asking for the Host Mammoth slide-in camper. I really love the look and design of the Host Mammoth but for the average person this camper is the much better value. The Arctic Fox camper looks very well made and very sturdy for a decent price.

    • @Yukikazehalo

Hosts are about the top level for truck campers but you have to pay for it. Very well built, well equipped, easily customized but are large, very heavy and priced well above what people expect to pay for a slide in truck camper. AF models are just fine for the average user.

Its too bad that cities don't let folks set things like this in city lots. While not cheap, this camper is a small home that has everything that is needed even for a small family. The laws should be changed too allow folks with smaller incomes to homestead vacant lots where the old home was removed by the city. Some streets have more empty lots on them than houses.

@@MrOmgfreak some states and cities require you to have a building permit to stay in your camper on your vacant land. Or in California There Are Rules limiting camping on your own land to no more than 30 days per year. Of course you need to get caught first and that all depends on your neighbors if they report you. You can stay at anyone spot in the national forest for free in California for up to 14 days or on BLM land in the desert for the same amount of time

What kind of depreciation do these get? I know with automobiles in 10 years tou can lose over 1/2 sticker price. Do they hold value better.. ? I dont plan on getting one but since vehicle depreciate due to mileage etc was just curious.. How do these compare to say a 15-20ft trailer in price.. These seem limited by obviously the bed of your vehicle. I am still younger in my mid 30s and when i go camping i think of tents, coleman stoves and lanterns.. Rvs, shell campers and trailer campers i would associate with elder folks for glampers. I am new to the concept of camping with all of these ammenities..

We need to get a "feel" for the unit first!!! This applies to EVERY video that this presenter does for Northwood. But when I can't see what the whole thing looks like cause you don't show and video is more than half done. It makes me think it's not a liveable floor plan. Otherwise why not show it ? Too bad you guys use Lauan in the shell construction. I wouldn't buy ANY RV that has Lauan in its construction. Why don't you step up the quality and use composite boards like the stuff made by Space Age Composites instead of Lauan.

We have tried several types of composites and haven't liked the results. We leave the RV in high temperature locations like Arizona for several months. Every time we get them back the sidewalls look blistered and it's a result of the composite. Lauan, if maintained, can last a lifetime! It's the best material to adhere to fiberglass but as you're mentioning if it isn't maintained can delaminate and become an issue.

If you have experienced a "blistering" problem it is most likely due to the bonding agent used to laminate the materials. Certain adhesives can be susceptible to failure due to exposure to heat. As for your claim that using composites is problematic is pure nonsense. Seems odd that the aerospace industry uses composites in aircraft structures which withstand extreme temperatures from 120 degrees f to -30 at altitude without failure.
Maybe you need to revisit or learn how to laminate composites with the correct bonding agents.

You could get a much better 5th wheel for that price considering you have to have a 1-ton pickup.

    • @steelheadranger
      @steelheadranger 6 лет назад +6

5th wheels are a lot longer (can't go a lot of places), thougher to park, a lot heavier (a lot more fuel). But 5ths wheels have a lot more room and many are like small condos nearly. Pros and cons with each style

If you shop around for a 3 year old camper like this they can be had for around 24k

@@steelheadranger All true but most places you're taking this monster you shouldn't have an issue taking a fifth wheel. After all, a 1-ton with this camper is going to be limited on where it can go just based on the weight and limitations of such a big truck that's not off road dedicated.

A generator should be standard on a camper you got a lot of damn option it's turning me off

The generator is a very expensive option that many people choose not to get to save some money. The good news is that we do offer the onboard generator and it does come prepped for one even if you choose not to get one.
