I'm not sure what it is you're trying to instill in these dogs?

Steadying them to wing and shot means more safety for the dogs as they won't be in the field of fire once the bird flushes. Also, if we're hunting covey birds, they won't flush any additional birds that are holding by being steady versus chasing birds and busting any birds that are holding.

@@chilly460 I love that you are trying to do the right thing for a pointing dog. I see SO little of that in this medium. Just curious as to why you send the dogs to retrieve live birds?

Shug ! Ah, we couldn’t get bobwhites last year just Coturnix which barely fly. We don’t shoot them so we can use them again as it was tough finding any to purchase, normally we’d use Bobwhites and shoot them and that would be a normal retrieve on a dead bird .

@@chilly460 I get it but you are sending your dogs to retrieve live birds. Dogs know a live bird from a dead one or cripple. When you hunt wild birds, how are they to know to point versus doing a retrieve on a live bird? If I miss a live bird and my dog finds it again, I expect him to point it, not go in for a retrieve, which will cause the bird to flush again. Perhaps I'm not understanding?

Shug ! I get what you’re saying, these are older proven dogs and this didn’t cause them issues pointing wild birds last season. I have the same issues finding birds this year and did not use Coturnix with the pups I’m training for the reason you stated, just going with launched pigeons. I trusted the older dogs to understand that finding a live bird immediately after a gunshot is different than pointing a live bird on their own.
