1,000s of abandoned storage units go up for auction everyday. High bidder wins the unit. Storage facilities are not allowed to auction off units until renters are more than 3 months behind. In any case someone is winning the unit. I don't begrudge anyone willing to do the hard work of cleaning out these units and dealing with the mess that comes with it. Obviously sometimes they get lucky. Congratulations to Flippin The Mitten on an awesome score.

Can you imagine if the owner of one of these units was watching when you are pawing through their stuff..awkward. So sad that they couldn't afford to keep up on the storage frees....or maybe they died ..or are in the hospital.. ..or are in prison..or deported to another country..or they won the lottery, or married a Nigerian prince and moved to a castle.. I am always curious about the stories of the owners of this stuff..
Yes, I agree. Thank you for the thoughtful comment. We think about many of the same things. Sometimes it can be sad, but at least we can feel something good about saving a precious item from the dump and passing it along to someone who will cherish it. Sometimes, the companies that we buy these from will not hold items for the previous owner or family that we want to leave for them, as was the case with this unit. You may enjoy hearing that we did go to a lot of effort to get some important things back to the family. You are right that it is awkward (and stressful, but in my opinion, it has to be done)
