We Did THIS to Our Little Stone House 🥴 DIY HOME RENOVATION

  • What did this little stone house ever do to deserve us bashing a big ol' hole right through it?! Well, on most DIY home renovations you can’t make an omelette with breaking a few eggs, & in this case, the eggs in question were concrete coated walls…not very in keeping with our old stone home. We’ve been putting this job off for long enough so decided to face the music, investigate what was actually under said concrete & ultimately, demolish part of the wall…YIKES!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky & Victoria x
    -------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a go. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Victoria, you did a great job compacting that soil over the rocks for the ramp. The next rain will tell whether or not the soil will stay in place. Very nice stone work under the window as well.

I'm glad to hear that! When I made a similar ramp I had chunks of turf from another place and put those on top. Within a season it was smooth sailing on it and never muddy. Great job too on the rebuild! Even that dark shot in darkness shows it'll look great!❤

You are both doing a great job on your homestead. As I was watching the difficulty with the wheelbarrow, I kept thinking that a new one was in order. Lo, and behold, Ricky presents a new wheelbarrow! There's nothing like proper tools and equipment to do a superb job.

You could hide a secret message in the wall, in a bottle or something like that! There’s a tradition in Germany where you hide a capsule in the foundations of a new building with a newspaper, some coins or other personal trinkets. Maybe there is something similar in other countries? You are putting in so much work to give it new life! Hope you’re back and cold are better!

What that makes me think of, as a farmer, is a hog house. They usually have windows over openings for the pigs to come and go thru. And there is usually a small sliding or lifting door for when you need to lock them in the building.
And one on each side would make sense because you want to keep the farrowing sows separate.

You and Victoria work so hard and we love your videos. I do watch a few other Chateau channels but when I came across yours right at the start I loved the difference. It was in a different country, it was a home and a property and I just love love the renovation of this little cottage and you both work so well together with a sense of humour and great collaboration. You’ll not get the seed starting mix moist enough by spraying! Put some in a bucket and pour at least two of those water bottles you were using in. Mix it with your hands & you’ll probably still need more water. You want a handful to hold together when squeezed without dripping water. Best of luck 💚

Another tip about working with stones: put a shovel head underneath, then put a second shovel under the first. Angle the wheelbarrow’s front side towards the rock, and manipulate your shovel/levers to roll the boulder onto the wheelbarrow. I use rocks in my hobby of landscape gardening, and I don’t have a helper.
The biggest boulders I’ve used weighed about 325 and 425 lb, respectively. Your boulder I reckon is at least 500, pushing 600 lb. How even two people shifted it shows how strong you both are! 🥰

I always use seeds from my grocery store tomatoes. Just grab a few seeds, (don’t worry about the pulp) and put them on a tissue to dry out. Then in a few days or as long as you want you can just plant them in your seed raising mix. Very easy. Just keep the water up to them, if they dry out, just water then they should pick up again. Btw, zucchini’s, watermelon, pumpkin etc needs lots of space. Happy planting! 😊

Next time you mix the soil transfer some to a container and rehydrate it that way. Don’t get it too wet..it is just right when you squeeze some soil in your hand and it holds together lightly. Then put the soil in your trays. That way it is not too dry as you are planting. The purpose for dampening the soil first is so when you water it the water is taken up better in the soil and stays hydrated better between watering so the seeds can germinate. Have fun with your garden!

The tomato that I love the most a grow every summer are the little yellow pear shaped tomatoes. They are lovely by themselves or in salads. The other one we grow and is very popular here in Alberta, Canada are tomatillos. We have a large Latin American community in Alberta and Mexican and Central American food is very popular. Tomatillos are used in salsa verde, enchiladas, tamales etc. My favourite use for them is salsa verde. Beefsteak tomatoes are also popular here as well for sauces etc and are particularly good for fried green tomatoes which is a dish that has come up from the southern States.

Initial thoughts would be the lack of a window sill meant the wall got a lot of water damage in that area?….but the lack of an inner face to the wall suggests otherwise unless the damp tracking through made them remove that also 🤔

My favorite slicing tomatos are costoluto genovese, paul robeson, and pineapple, in that order. My favorite cherry tomato is sun gold. If I could only have one, it would be the costoluto.

Several years ago I "rebuilt" my wheelbarrow with a new tub to replace the tired and holey tub. At the same time, I decided to replace the single front wheel with two wheels spread about 300 mm apart. It works great but is a bit more difficult to turn. I'm older (82) so the second wheel helps a lot when carrying heavy weight because now I only have to push it forward and not worry so much about balance!

Also random thought because I've seen others on RUclips sealing floors to stop Radon (causes lung cancer comes from the ground) hopefully you guys are in a low risk area but there are Radon maps to check :)

So much work. I think that I would have just put a flower planter box in front of that area and it could have hidden the funky rocks that you don’t like. Your property is so beautiful with all the trees blooming

Oh man!!! It would have been wonderful if you’d have put two small French doors in those openings. I love watching you guys! Hard work is so satisfying!!! You guys are great!!!

Ricky, I'd like to recommend the audiobook "Kicking and Dreaming - A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll". It's a biography of Ann and Nancy Wilson from the band Heart, which although are way before your time, is interesting never the less. Keep up the good work, you two, and enjoy your spring there in Portugal! Cheers from NE Florida.

People aspire to many things but the height of your aspirations has been reached, by becoming a two wheel barrow family His and Hers. No fighting over the new wheelbarrow.
