CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Gabriel Shear (John Travolta) has strapped his hostages with C4 and stainless steal ball bearings.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Dominic Sena follows up his stylish action film Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) with this high-tech thriller. John Travolta stars as Gabriel Shear, a charismatic spy who plots to steal a multi-billion-dollar fortune in illegal government funds. In order to make his scheme work, however, Gabriel needs some help from a computer hacker, which is where Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman) comes in. Stanley has been paroled from prison after serving a lengthy sentence for penetrating the FBI's cyber-surveillance operations. Issued a restraining order that keeps him away from computers and living penniless in a trailer park, Stanley wants only to be reunited with his daughter Holly, who's in the custody of his ex-wife, now remarried to a pornographer. Gabriel and his partner Ginger (Halle Berry) offer Stanley the chance to get his child back in exchange for his help, but the hacker soon realizes he's a pawn in a larger operation than the high-tech bank heist he thought he was perpetrating. In the meantime, a dedicated federal agent (Don Cheadle), the same man who once arrested Stanley, is trying to expose Gabriel's operation. Swordfish also stars Sam Shepard and Zach Grenier.

Fun fact:
This 30-second explosion scene cost $5 million, required 180 cameras, took 3 days to shoot and 8 months to complete in post-production. Meanwhile, the script just said ‘KABOOM!’
Wow!
Got to give them credit though. This movie was ahead of its time in a big way back then. Remember this was only 2001.
@@MethshockFilms The Matrix did it first. 1999.
The Matrix did it first. 1999.
@@MethshockFilms I have to agree with Nater. While this scene is cool looking, it is in no way revolutionary.
I worked on this film. This scene was shot on Main Street in Ventura, CA. It's essentially a Matrix "bullet time" shot with an array of still cameras, but unlike the Matrix, which did it's bullet-time on a greenscreen stage, ours was a giant circular rail, physically on the street. I think there were something like 150+ cameras, all daisy-chained together. We did several passes that all got composited in post: a pass with the explosion, a pass with cars being ripped into the air, a pass with a few stuntmen being ratcheted, etc. But on the one with the cars being ratcheted, one of the cars swung back and actually hit the rail, moving the entire thing. It meant any future passes wouldn't match. So we had to start all over from scratch. It caused a pretty substantial delay.
Impressive, great movie, good job.
Wow . Awesome
This movie was the bomb, get it "the bomb" 🤣😂😄😁🙂😐☹️😞 never mind😓
Nice
u want some confirmation on how good you did or what is this comment supposed to be ? You are pathetic.
2020 . the explosion scene is still amazing !!!
Yes it is
that is Dominic Sena, bro
2021...And the rest of the movie is still rubbish. Apart from Berryboobs.
It works so well.
@@user-afiqhot30 most definitely the director.
One of the best scenes I´ve ever watched at the cinema. It blew my mind at the time. It was like a matrix effect but very well implemented.
Definitely, one of the best movie scenes I have ever watched
Stfu
hahaha if you say so man
Haven’t watched a lot of movies, eh?
@@07foxmulder hehehe, I would like to think he meant to to say "one of the best movie explosion scenes I have ever watched" which would make me think you 2 would leave completely different comments on it :)
I watched this in the cinema when it screened in Australia back in 2001. When that explosion tore up the screen and the patrol car smashed down, the audience was stunned into silence except for one person breathing out, 'faaaaaark'. Incredible set piece opening scene.
" except for one person breathing out, 'faaaaaark" LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!
February 2022 this opening scene still gives me chills
Hell yeah. Incredible scene. First saw this in 2001, also here in February 2022!
I remember getting goosebumps when I saw this in theaters.
This is up there with the best explosion scenes in cinema history! With Kingdom Crystal Skull nuke scene, Angels & Demons Antimatter explosion, Rouge One Death star, and Deep water Horizon scenes as total Honorable mentions.
This scene and the IED scene from "Behind Enemy Lines" are phenomenal!!!
Post-matrix effects
Ultimatum like effect 😊
This scene alone cost 90 grand and is the most elaborate still camera effect Warner bros has done to date.
'How did this get made'
True. Gives you that Matrix feeling
@@sweetsalvation7143 it's from the same producer Joel Silver.
I never get tired of the time freeze special effect. I wish they use it more nowadays.
you gotta admit, this scene alone if a bold statement! Seeing it so many years after I can notice compositing and greenscreens, still it is quite amazing! Sound FX are great too!
one of the best explosion scene ever brilliant action
This scene is the one thing I remember most from this movie.
Chopper scene is also very good.
& the hacking scenes😂
Even if anyone is not a fan of this film, you can’t deny though that explosion scene still gives goosebumps
Probably one of the best 180 degree-scenes in slow motion - and how the SWAT-team are flying around - it's just amazing :D
Lol..the build up in this scene still gets me...dope shot..
At 0:33 Howard Saint talking to War Machine.
& wolverine as hacker
This scene and John's acting is awesome the explosion is one of a kind all around great work
This scene was ahead of its time
Except it was two years after The Matrix...
Yeah this is a decent looking scene but it was nothing new, even for the time
Like the beginning of DEJAVU by the Denzel Washington.
"She's rigged to explode if away from the bank." Whew, that was hard.
No kidding. Doesn't exactly take a wordsmith.
"we're gonna need some new FBI guys..."
LOL. Yes, my fave Christmas movie did.
Hopefully they aren't related
Screw those FED boys
Not these FBI guys because they're kinda dead. 😂😂😂😂
best hostage scene ever...
now that's a bad guy, uriel did say he was going to start executing hostages one by one from the very start of the movie and yet they chose to fuck with him.
so that was their decision and all for what?
+Ben noneofyourbeeswax sorry, your point?
They should have titled this clip "The Matrix Shot"
I agree
mikethemotormouth Funny you should mention that: the shot where the explosion happens was filmed in much the same way as that famous shot in the opening scene of "The Matrix" where Carrie-Anne Moss kicks the cop and the camera does the 360 degree spin thing around her as it happens. According to IMDb, 135 still cameras were synchronized to capture the explosion shot, and by the time it was over, the effect had so many composites in it that director Dominic Sena and the producers couldn't tell what were real practical effects and what had been CG'd by the computer. It ended up being the most complicated effect in Warner Bros. history.
Yeah that's kinda of what I was inferring: that they, for lack of a better term, stole the shot
mikethemotormouth Oh, gotcha
@@AlexAceves1994 they did it right
I enjoyed the hell out of this movie when I saw it in theaters as a 13 year old. My three favorite things about it were this explosion and topless Halle Berry.
Iconic scene. the first time i saw it. may jaw dropped to the ground. so intense. nice camera.
I was looking for this scene but I didn’t knew the name of the movie, I only remembered that an hostage blew up during a heist, so I had to search by description...
I’m pretty sure I’m on a FBI watch list now...
Same here brother😂 I was also looking for this scene but didn't knew the name🤣
Oh boy.
One of the best experience with surround sound I ever lived in a cinema!!!
Juggernaut, War Machine and Wolverine all in one.
And Howard Saint(The Punisher)!!!
And Storm
This scene is designed to show the inflexibility of an institution (police) in their tactics. They ignore the guy who has him on the phone, they *must* drag the hostage to safety, the officers don't listen when multiple people are shouting to let her go.
That's not the intent at all - it's just lazy writing. Only the main character can see the glaringly obvious problem with dragging a bomb to the safe zone, to manufacture suspense for the film. They just wanted a reason to blow up a hostage around cop cars to do a cool spinning slow-mo shot. Don't fall for 'Hollywood reflects real life', it absolutely doesn't; this wouldn't be a tactic even by the worst police force in the world!
Only an idiot would believe what you have just written.
She's wearing a bomb vest, with items clearly marked C4, even without confirmation from the hostage takers that the woman was strapped with explosives no way would they move in like they did in this scene.... Also let's for arguments sake say she wasn't strapped with explosives and just a regular hostage, what about the 20+ other hostages and the dozen or so heavily armed goons in the bank packing military grade hardware?
Did the police forget about them in this scene? Seemingly so.
I love the effect, its great visual trick BUT totally unrealistic and written only to cause suspense and drama.
@@ultra_vires I was in a thread for a scene in "Fury" and war buffs are talking about how the German response to the American tanks with soldiers walking after them, was too stupid for words. So, movies suck, but they look great.
Exactly
What could one expect from an agency that only provide their operatives with 6 months of training, I really hope that the LAPD didn't harrass the film crew for this scene like how they harrassed the crew that made the Michael Chiklis cop tv series The Shield for brining police corruption to the surface.
Who els finds her death kinda heartbreaking?
She tries to get away from the police knowing she'll die if she's outside of the bank and trise desperately to get away.
I watch this when i was a kid and i was mad af at the officer who pull her lol
Yeah. She went to the bank that day for some stuff to get one and isn't coming home.
At least it would've been a quick death.
My relatives all took the COVID jab, and every iota of evidence I've read both scientific and prophetic tells me it's a time bomb. People do stupid stuff all the time. Be ready.
Nope
I watched this movie, in theater, twice, just for the beginning part. The rest was just Overload, but too good to miss 😂
my first DVD vid was this film, the sound, color, clarity, just blew VHS away.
Watched the movie yesterday, fun and underrated flick overall. Miss that greenish filter 2000's movies had.
I saw this yesterday as well, still a fun movie
Travolta was lit in this movie!!
This movie has "reading mode" enabled.
2:05, I swear, I've seen plenty of impressive explosions in movies, but that was *AWESOME!!!*
Only this scene is 10000 times better than entire The Matrix Resurrections.... Damn! Too bad Joel Silver didn't produce the 4th one.
One of the best damn scenes I’ve ever seen. I remember when this movie came out. We just couldn’t get over that explosion.
Michael Bay would be proud 💥💣
Loved this movie growing up. Still remember it coming up on tv one night and I’m like hmm sword fish sounds interesting
Me to man
I saw this yesterday
The most powerful opening scene EVER in a Cinematic Movie!
As opposed to an uncinematic movie?
2024 this scene stills freacking impressive
Insanely good considering that its 22 years old. This scene gives me goose pimples every time I watch it. Imagine seeing what was going to happen but not being able to stop it. That's absolutely terrifying.
This is one of the things I wish that the mythbusters would have tested
Lol.........
I wonder with that much pressure and that much force if those ball bearings disintegrate in to small pieces, not saying the explosion wouldnt of been as bad or anything like that.
@@nathanmaas5290 yeah. while the balls would have been annihilated theres still gonna be tons of shrapnel everywhere but it wouldnt bounce everywhere like the balls in the movie did. but even then the balls shouldnt have bounced like they were rubber
tested for what? lol
How many members of Buster's family that would still be alive.
Probably one of the most underrated movies!!!
At 0:35 Howard Saint is talking to James"Rhodey/War Machine"Rhodes on the phone.
You can clearly see the C4 wrapped around her yet a trained Swat member is hauling her off to other people hmmmm
Just lazy writing for an excuse to do their cool slow-mo spinning scene
Those SWAT went to Stormtrooper negotiation school
Dude?! 😂💀😂
Don't talk, just listen.
Hands down the best cinematography I seen so far
I seen, lol
Whelp, that's a lot of dead cops.
This scene is epic. I remember the first time HBO Brazil showed it in early 2002: the sound of this is huge, 'rounding' in all 5.1 audio channels
Moral of the scene - never underestimate the bad guy. He is a bad guy for a reason.
well.... he wasnt a bad guy really if you pay attention to the story :P
I used to rewatch this so many times as a kid i thought it looked so cool
Still gives me goosebumps.
Better than current CGI
When I saw the trailer from this movie didnt have many Faith about it. Dominic sena did a good job with gone in 60 seconds. One friday I was hanging out with my brother and a friend and decided to go to the movies. Man this initial scene was a blast!!!!😂😂😂😂. From there I have this scene printed on my mind forever and ever
Anyone noticed that the hostage was trying to get back inside when to police tries to get her? Anyway, amazing strong scene!
theblackbull55 she knows that if she walks "outside of the yard" the bomb goes off..... BOOM!
They weren't going to blow her up if she was with them.
+theblackbull55 Yea I noticed funny thing is what would the shear odds be that neither Officer Dumb nor Officer Dumber would think I really hope that psycho in the bank does not have a remote or otherwise we are so dead
Yes that's one of the first things I noticed
Yea it shows the natural stupidity of the police.
I saw this in theaters with my dad at the Metreon in SF back in 2001, I was 10 and thought would be funny to throw a piece of candy and see where it would land. We were in the middle row my dad said I could throw 1 piece, I did and then he held me back against my seat. Nobody knew it was me, thank you dad.
Why did they have that whooping howling sound when the camera was orbiting the scene? It sounded so dumb. Like the sounds of the explosion, shouting, and shattering glass weren't enough.
r man the soundtrack as well for this was ace!
I remember seeing this in theaters. I was in school and this looked so damn cool at the time
Still is, bro.
That poor woman.
this is one of the best shot I ever seem on movie
She's done take cover LOL 😆
Now if only the rest of the movie were as good as the first ten minutes...
Scene still holds up, always thought this movie was underrated
Bring back these hyper moment scenes!!
Good Luck 🤙🏼
why would they fricking move the BOMB (hotage) Screw that SWAT team makes me so mad!!!
2023 and this Scene still spetacular!!!
Yep, still cool.
this movie is coming to Netflix on August 1, 2020.
Wow, it's been a while since I've seen this movie!
"dog walks out of the yard, gets the shit shocked out of them....so don't fuck with me"
You cut it off before seeing the single ball-bearing come to a stop.
What a brilliantly executed blast scene that's awesome 🤘🏻🎬👌🎞🎥
I have seen this scene so many times, but for some reason only now hearing and seeing the ball bearings.
2:14 Bruh for an explosion THAT close, the flame should've been brighter than the sky and not the other way around.
don't act smart when you just watched Corridor crew
Bruuuuuh Actually it would be less bright because we know the explosive type composition 4 also this movie came out a while ago
Best Criminal wins scene ever!
That sound is amazing
No one like Travolta ever
A man's GOT to learn his limitations.
Magnum Force
That bomb part is Amazing I never get bored of watching that.. Peace from the U. K
This was an absolute wicked movie but I love it.
I love this scene.
Yes, why would they listen to the cop on the phone with the criminal in charge?
20lb s of C4 & 15lb s of ball bearings, then the wiring and other hardwear. That would make a BIG creater.
What a good movie
This movie was trying so hard to be the next matrix
3 double espressos has literally the same effect on me.
Best movie scene of all time.. 😮
HOLY C4 BATMAN!!
My favorite movie
Jurassic World: We have a really messed up female death
Swordfish: . . .
Outstanding movie! price winning scene for me
This scene makes me go crazy at 2:05, Just like the explosion of an abandoned building from the 1999 Media Asia film called Gen-X Cops. Where the members of the SDU had sneaked into its own place by spotting one of Akatora's bombs that was coming from the inside as possible. So that, It would've been some kind of a fact that I've already read it in no time. Just for everyone.
If I were a criminal this is a mirror of myself😶 no empathy no emotion no reasoning with
